UTBM YES!!!! But no...

Hello everyone,

I am in my first year at the IUT in Quality Logistics Industrial and Organization. I'm starting to show some interest in possibly pursuing studies at an engineering school.

The UTBM seems to be quite well ranked, but in my opinion, it's not the most important criterion, even though it should be taken into account for job searching.

I would like to enter in the 3rd year there and I would already like to have some clarifications regarding the training offered. The Engineering and Process Management program appeals to me and seems to align with my initial training in QLIO. I know that we choose our subjects, but do we have total freedom regarding the choice of UVs? The internships last 6 months in the 4th and 5th years, but is it really possible to do a semester and/or an internship abroad?

I would like to know what you think of this school while remaining objective if possible. =) I also plan to apply to INSA Lyon for Industrial Engineering, and to Polytech for the same program, but UTBM really catches my attention.

Thank you for your responses! =)

Hi,

as I'm in my last year at UTBM, I’m allowed to respond to your message. I think the information provided by Biniou is mostly true overall. It is true that UTBM has a great openness to international opportunities. However, I still want to point out that only students meeting certain criteria can go abroad. That is to say, only students who have a certain number of sufficient credits.
As for internships abroad, it is definitely possible. For me, it’s all a matter of will. Sure, it’s not easy, but if you put in the effort and take the time, you will find something.

For my part, I have already completed a 6-month internship in Germany, and I am currently in a study semester in the Netherlands in Groningen. Next semester, I definitely plan to go abroad for another internship. When I talk to my friends who are mostly in better engineering schools (let’s not kid ourselves, UTBM isn't Polytechnique), they don’t have as many opportunities as we do to go abroad. Their partnerships with foreign universities are fewer than UTBM’s.

Even if UTBM is not in the top 10 of the best engineering schools in France, it has nothing to envy them. The semester system is, in my opinion, the best solution, and there are also 2x24 weeks of internships, which few schools offer. UTBM is also quite well-known in Germany due to its proximity. Many engineers do their internships in Germany.

If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask, I know it’s not easy to choose a school. I went through it too. For me, international opportunities were also a criterion for choice, and I absolutely do not regret it.

Alexandre.

PS: sorry for forgetting the accents, but I’m writing from a foreign keyboard and it’s a hassle.

Hello,

I am currently at U.T.B.M and even though I am not in the I.M.A.P branch, I believe I can provide some insight.

First of all, regarding the choice of U.V, the freedom is not total; there are "quasi" mandatory U.V, the regulations are a bit unclear, but certain U.V are strongly recommended (for example: a math refresher U.V for students coming from DUT). However, the choice of subjects is really interesting and you won't find its equivalent in any other French engineering school (except for UTC and UTT, of course).

Next, regarding internships, this is for me another strong asset of UTBM, there are many people who go on internships or study semesters abroad during their course, and even though it can be a bit more complicated than finding an internship in France, it is extremely feasible.

Well, my opinion might not be objective since I am in this program, but for other schools, INSA Lyon is more reputed than UTBM and I would say that polytech schools might be a bit less, but this is information to take with a grain of salt, and as you mentioned, reputation is just one criterion, and giving it disproportionate importance is not the best decision.

If you want to know more about U.T.B.M, feel free to ask your questions here or on the student association forum: http://ae.utbm.fr/forum2/

To summarize, I would say:
- decent training
- nice customization of the curriculum
- international openness better than average
- pleasant and active student life

Sorry for the flood... :s

Last question. It's important to think about the next step in my studies, but for now, the most important thing is to pass my final year.

I have a choice between 2 options:

UE 3.2: Methods and tools for flow management:
Just in time - Workshop implementation - Workshop scheduling - Workshop control - Mid and long-term planning - Production management through MRP 180h

OR

UE 3.3: Methods and tools for quality control:
Quality methods and tools in design - Experimental approaches - Metrology management - Reliability - Measurement - Process control

I like quality, having had good results in this area, but I find the first UE more appealing and it seems more aligned with my possible further studies.

What do you recommend?

I'm not at the top of my class, but almost ;-) I'm in second place. Thank you for your information, biniou =).

For abroad, "it turns out to be a bit more complicated than an internship search in France, but it's extremely feasible." For the internship, I imagine that UTBM has contacts with companies abroad. When you say that it's complicated, does that mean that the paperwork and steps to take are considerable?

I sent an email to someone who is responsible for informing students about the school, and I learned that UTBM has a partnership with a university in China. Does that mean it's possible to spend a semester there? Regarding internships, are there many destinations?

In fact, the openness to international opportunities is really an advantage that will influence my choice of one program over another.

Just a little update as I have some new information regarding my further studies.

Here are the choices I have made that seem to be a good compromise between what I like and my potential level after leaving the IUT, and on the other hand, what seems to be a valuable training.

UTBM imap remains my first choice. The training seems to fit well with the continuity of QLIO, and the international aspect is a strong plus for me.

INSA Lyon is more elitist and honestly, even if I were to push my class rank (which is not the case but almost), it feels a bit out of reach for someone from a DUT. Still, I can always apply. :)

ESSTIN in Nancy with the ISYS option that I just discovered recently trains generalist engineers with a Systems Engineering option.

And finally, this year's introduction to mechanics (which has been rather simple, the calculation of speed of industrial systems using derivatives/torque really interested me) makes me think about talking to my physics teacher; I wonder if I should continue in the field of mechanics (a bit risky since I may be at a significant disadvantage compared to GMP students, for example) at Polytech' Montpellier.

And one last choice that has been on my mind for some time now, why not try an ATS prep course to get into Centrale Lille and continue in what I really love, automobiles.

In fact, I generally love industrial sciences, and the choices I have listed are nothing more than, in my opinion, options related to Industrial Engineering, but more specifically, automobiles and motorsport; I really enjoy that.

So, I would like to have your opinion on these schools compared to the IUT I am currently in, an IUT QLIO.

Thank you. =)
