Hello,

I bought a CANON EOS 1000D body only, and now I'm struggling to find a good (versatile) lens because I'm new to photography...

My only goal is to take portrait, landscape, and family photos.... (yes, it's necessary), but definitely not macro (I don't see how that could be useful for me)...

So... Canon 18-55 IS or 18-200 IS or something else??? What’s the difference in quality?....
I'm not looking for LUXURY, but I want good photo quality (honestly, for its price, the images better be sharp).

If you could give me some advice on this....
Thank you and have a good day
Configuration: Windows XP Opera 10.10

The 18-200mm is very convenient (no need to change lenses to switch from wide angle to telephoto). But personally, I find that the quality is not there. Look here, at 18mm, the distortion (straight lines that aren't) is way too pronounced, as well as the vignetting (dark corners). In wide angle (for landscapes), it is really limited. The sharpness is not great either (the image lacks finesse and detail).

I would definitely opt for the 18-55mm IS, one of the best quality/price ratios in this range, which allows for a very acceptable level without breaking the bank. And if a telephoto lens is needed, adding a 55-250mm is a good option because it also has good feedback. The price of these two lenses is equivalent to that of the 18-200, with less convenience (you'll need to switch between the two) but with significantly better image quality.

Hello,

For the use you described, I indeed recommend the Canon 18-55 IS lens, but if you want a bit more versatility without carrying two lenses, a 18-135 or a 18-200 stabilized lens could also suit you... it's a bit more expensive, but it will allow you to zoom a little more than a 55mm if you're doing outdoor photography.

Check it out, there's a selection and the prices are reasonable: http://www6.pixellium.com/?tdfs=1&searchbox=1&showDomain=1

Talk to you later!

Hello
totally agree with Savino, nothing more to add, everything has been said.
18-55 IS + 55-250 IS Canon, very good for the price.
Good photos

thank you... thank you... infinitely for everything....

so, I will equip myself (without hesitation) with the CANON EF-S 18-55mm IS first, ready... with some savings, I'll get the 55-250 IS.

thank you all
