My Mac's memory is decreasing by itself!

Hello everyone
I just realized that the memory of my Mac (MacBook Unibody) is decreasing on its own
I have spent a long time scouring websites to find a solution but nothing.. and nobody explains it to me ..

So I'm asking you if you have a solution?

Here's what happened, I noticed that my memory was decreasing (1MB every 20 seconds roughly, yes very stressful) and I looked online and saw someone suggesting clearing the history, which did temporarily boost my memory, but then it started to drop again.
I have therefore quit all applications (iTunes, Safari, Mail, Quicksilver, I turned off the WiFi and stopped Time Machine) and yet it didn't stop.

I then forcefully shut down my computer (because it wouldn't turn off curiously) and now it doesn't seem to be decreasing anymore... but I would still like some help on the subject.. Thank you in advance

PS: I have a Windows partition (with not much on it, maybe 10GB), could that have an impact?
Configuration: Mac OS X Safari 531.9

    Good evening,

Do you perform regular maintenance on this Mac? Repair permissions, run an optimizer like Onyx or ToolsX?

    Hello,
I currently have the same problem!
    I use Onyx regularly.

If anyone has an idea or knows how to get out of this, I would be happy to know how,
as I lost 90 GB in one afternoon!

    Thank you in advance.

      Hello,

I suppose that when talking about "memory," it's the hard disk capacity you're referring to!

Try booting from the installation disk by holding down the C key until you start up from that disk.
Then, ignore the installation window, go to Utilities/Disk Utility/select disk (HD) and verify/repair the disk + repair the permissions.
What is the format of the disk?

Thank you for this quick response, but I think I found a simpler solution.

I rummaged through my Mac and was astonished to see that Mail was taking up 200 GB of memory,
it was retrieving a message that I couldn't send of 10.45 MB over 4000 times. So I deleted my inboxes through the library and the problematic email on Gmail, and everything is better now.

      Thanks again!

    Hello,
Garulfo, I had exactly the same problem as you.
Suddenly, I realized that I had no more memory; I searched in Mail and found out that my Gmail account was retrieving an email of 48MB in over 3200 copies...
I deleted everything from my library, but the next day my 3200 emails were back...
    Can someone help me????
    Thank you!

      Good evening,
For me, and it seems to have worked, I took the following actions to "reset" Mail because it’s not easy to reinstall it:

1/ I deleted all my accounts in Mail via preferences,
2/ I then deleted all the mailboxes related to my accounts that hadn't been deleted.
There was one left (weirdly with 4000 emails) that I couldn't delete, so I went through:
3/ Finder -> Library -> Mail -> folder "IMAP - ****@imap.gmail.com" -> then the mailbox in question full of emails that I "dragged" to the trash on the Mac.

3 bis/ In the meantime, I went to delete the email in Gmail.

4/ I then recreated my accounts in Mail!

Good luck, and feel free to keep me updated...

    Good evening,

Thank you very much for your response.
Am I at risk of losing all my emails if I delete my email accounts?
    Thank you!

Under no circumstances do you delete mailboxes on the "internet," at most just one email.
The only mailboxes you delete are in the Mail program.
When recreating your account, it should normally redownload all the emails that are on the server of your email address (at least for me there was no problem).
