[W. Media Player 10] playback speed issue

Hello,
In video, the "playback speed" option (in the Playback tab) is greyed out and I can no longer change the speed. Neither with the >> button at the bottom right. Nor with the Ctrl+Shift shortcuts. Nor by going through View, Enhancements, Playback speed settings. To fast-forward, I only have the option to manually drag the cursor.
And it happened without me doing any manipulation.
By contrast, in audio all the options to change speed work very well.
If you have any idea, I’m listening. Thanks.

Hi Marco13,

The videos you’re watching, aren’t they DivX?

Thank you for replying
My problem occurs with .avi . However, when I read .wmv (Windows Movie Maker) with Windows Media Player, it works. The tab is no longer grayed out.
Weird !!
To test, I just downloaded a small .mpg file. The button is grayed out as well.

Hi,

Sorry, I couldn’t reply earlier.

Generally, AVI files are associated with DivX. I think it’s due to the DivX compression that you can’t fast-forward such a file. But don’t worry, you’re not the only one in this situation. Everyone has to have encountered this drawback with AVI at some point.

If you want to be able to read them, I recommend downloading VLC media player from:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

If I’m not mistaken, it does. Plus, it’s completely free and doesn’t require any codecs to read the different video formats.

Yes, but I also have the problem with .mpg!!
But, I think I’ll let it run. I’m not keen on adding software (256 MB of RAM and 30 GB for the HDD).
Thanks for your help.

The fact that you have the same problem with MPEGs actually shows that it’s due to the compression applied to the original videos when saving them in formats like MPEG or AVI. For VLC media player, it takes virtually no space at all; it’s a “little” program, at most 6 MB on your disk, and it doesn’t use much memory either (I’m not sure exactly how much, but it’s light). In addition, you don’t risk spyware or viruses if you download it from the address I gave you. @+ -- Angel59 ;)

Hello,
I’m having the same reading problem.
I followed Angel 59’s advice and downloaded http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
I’m happy with it, and it also plays all files including DivX...
