Hello, I have Windows 98 with a legal activation code, but it doesn't work during activation... why?

I called Microsoft and they provide no information.

No more! The only thing you can do is (if version 2) install a generic USB drive support (which doesn’t work 100%).

+1. But honestly, with good old Linux, you can do so much more and it's definitely more secure. Install Windows 7 if your PC can handle it, of course, or otherwise switch to Ubuntu; it's good for beginners (and others too) really, like don't even think about trying Gentoo right from the start.

You still run with 98.

I also have Windows 7.

But for Windows 98 (I keep it out of nostalgia and I still work on it), what is it due to?

Your CD is original; make sure to mark the key correctly.

If it's an OEM and you've already installed it on another PC (more specifically, another hard drive), then you won't be able to reinstall it on another machine. That's the logic from M$.

Yes, the CD is original and I have entered the key several times...

6 years ago when I reinstalled it, it worked well.

Oh well. It's not an OEM, but after installing it so many times, it doesn't work anymore. But normally, when you call Microsoft and give them your valid key, they make it work or give you another one. But for them, Windows 98 might be from another era (almost 11 years ago, OH WOW, they probably don't even remember they made it^^).

Hello

Windows 98 has not been supported by Microsoft since July 2006! Therefore, there is no longer any information provided! Moreover, there has never been an activation procedure for Windows 98, just entering a valid key and everything installs! The activation procedure began with Windows XP.

Yes, it's a full version of Windows 98, not an OEM, but since I've reinstalled it several times, my license is blocked?

With my Windows 7, due to problems, I reformatted it 4 times in a week and my key was not blocked...

Wow, they're really strict with Windows 98...

PS: When I call Microsoft and say Windows 98, they tell me there's no more support for Windows 98 (it's too old lol).

I was right "too old" they don't know anymore^^.
Otherwise, your Windows 7, if you reinstall it 10,000 times on the same PC and on the same hard drive, you can activate it. (10,000 times is to impress, of course, let's be clear, 10 activations would already be quite a lot, but if it gets blocked, just a little overpriced call to M$ and there you go, the little key is unlocked.

Well summarized henri59, and especially do not confuse the 0 and O like the I and 1 when entering the code.

Everything you can do on 98, you can also do on XP, a thousand times better. Don't mess with 98, but with XP, there you go.

Infomax: I installed them once on a virtual PC and three times on physical ones without any issues (well, we're limited to 1 activation per day and 10 activations over the internet).

"Finally, we are limited to 1 activation per day and 10 activations per internet": in theory, I know something about it...

Infomax, we don't care because W98 or Me won't activate!! and you can put it on 20 machines with the same code because it's not detected by Microsoft and there haven't been any updates since 2006.

Here you go, I confused 0 with O, it works now...

HOMBOURGEOIS: Thank you ;)

mickaa: I don't have Windows XP :'(

Infomax: Why "in theory," did you have activation issues?

Well, I know Microsoft and sometimes the keys are very strange: sometimes you activate them once and then nothing happens, or you can activate them 5 times without any problems.
Otherwise, HOMBOURGEOIS, we don't have to get angry about a key, right?
"We don't care because W98 or Me doesn't activate!!". Maybe now and indeed, but I have already tried Win 98 keys without being able to continue the installation, but as I was saying, that must be a while ago and I apologize for that.
Win 98 in terms of security is 0, I know what I'm talking about; even XP is starting to become a real Trojan magnet, so be careful if you go on the internet with it.

I'm not getting angry... I'm just correcting a bit, we're talking about W98 here, not XP or Vista! That's all.

W98 or Me does not activate and has NEVER activated, only a valid key was/is necessary, that's it, proof is that he succeeded (error between O and 0).

I have a machine running W98, one on Me, and one on XP, all networked.
I’m currently posting from the one on Me, installed originally since 1999 (it's a dinosaur lol), and I've never caught any crap and yet it serves every day.

HOMBOURGEOIS: Since the updates for Windows 98 are no longer distributed by Microsoft, it is possible to find them on the net to do them?

Yes, I will install Ubuntu 9.10...

I have a Windows 7 license but for my second PC ;)
