M-Audio Keystation 49 MIDI Driver Issues

Solved

Hello,

I just acquired a Keystation 49 MIDI keyboard from the brand Midiman (now M-Audio). I connected it via USB to my iMac running OS 10.5.8, but there was no response. I plan to use this keyboard with Reason software, so I went into the preferences and tried to detect the keyboard, but nothing worked, it still didn't appear.

I then went to the M-Audio website and tried to download the necessary driver to make my keyboard work. I went to Midisport/Keystation 49/Mac OS 10.5.8, and from what I understood, the driver is pre-installed on this version of Mac OS, so it was impossible to download the driver. In any case, I didn't find any link.

So I would like to know the opinion of the more experienced on this matter; did I do something wrong, or is there nothing to be done?

Thank you in advance for the replies. Configuration: Mac OS X Firefox 3.5.5

Good evening

There is no need for a driver for Mac.
Plug in and turn on the keyboard
First, go to:
Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup

Display the "MIDI" window (Presentation menu)

The Keystation should appear.

If it doesn’t, create a new setup and name it.

The Keystation should appear.

If it still doesn't, click on the "Add Device" icon, double-click on the newly created device and fill in the missing information.

When launching Reason, ignore the information messages about the MIDI input problem and the absence of a control surface, then go to "Preferences/Keyboards and Control Surfaces" to set the keyboard you will use and assign it to bus A in the "Advanced Control" tab.

It should work.

Thank you very much for this very detailed response! The problem is that the Mac does not offer the brand Midiman or M-Audio when creating a new MIDI device... I'm not sure what to do...

Go to "Apple Menu/About This Mac/More Info/Hardware/USB

Does the keyboard appear?

Additional question: is it connected to a hub (USB hub)?
It can happen that the power supplied is insufficient and the keyboard is not recognized due to lack of energy.
It is better to connect it directly to the Mac, or to use a powered hub if you do not have the external power for the keyboard.

Indeed, it's a second-hand keyboard, but the indicators light up properly when I plug it in. The USB cable is also sometimes used for my mbox; in short, it works and so does the port. I will try everything you mentioned and get back to you afterward. Anyway, thank you for your help.

It seems they made a mistake at M-Audio, I downloaded the Midisport 1x1 plug-in for Mac OS 10.5.8, and it says it should fix issues for the Keystation 49. Indeed, I installed it, and now my Keystation 49 appears in my MIDI devices, but when I test the setup and play on my keyboard, nothing happens...

Midisport ... So you've connected your keyboard to the Mac via MIDI?
"Still nothing," what does that mean? This kind of keyboard is called a master keyboard. It doesn't produce any sound. There is no built-in synthesizer. You need an external synth or other devices or software that processes MIDI. Like Reason, for example.
The configuration utility test will only allow you to see if an input or output (black arrows under the "device") is active or not when you manipulate the keyboard. So if the Mac is indeed receiving data from the keyboard.

If it sees them, there shouldn't be any other issues with software like Reason, GarageBand, Logic Pro, etc.

So, no, I am not in MIDI, but still in USB. I don't know why, but the Midisport plugin allowed the keyboard to appear in the MIDI devices. And when I say nothing happens, I mean that when I click "test configuration," nothing happens when I press the keyboard, whereas if it were working, there should be a sound coming from the computer, just to indicate that it is receiving an electrical impulse, or so I imagine. When I open Reason, I go to keyboards and control surfaces, and when I click "auto-detect surfaces," it finds nothing. So I create one myself, to which I reconnect my Keystation, which is indeed in my MIDI devices, and when I create a synth, any synth, I play, but still nothing... At this stage, there must be a problem with the keyboard, right?

Curious indeed, the midisport thing.

The tester just generates a click, and highlights the input arrow of your iconized keyboard.

Download this:
https://www.kinetic-lights.com/

In the disk image, run the midilog script after turning on your keyboard.

A Terminal window should open and display the name of your keyboard and show a line each time you press or release a key on it.

[] yes [] no

If that's the case, it means your keyboard is properly detected and interpreted.
We can move on to Reason.
Otherwise, the keyboard has a problem.

Yes, here the tester is doing nothing at all.

I downloaded midilog, I'm not really sure if I did what I was supposed to do, when I double-click on the terminal icon called midilog, here's what shows up:

Clearly, the connection is working between your keyboard and the Mac.
When does active sensing appear? I don't have that term at home.

Try to configure your keyboard in Reason.

1) Preferences / Keyboards and Control Surfaces.
2) Add: Manufacturer: M-Audio - Model: Other (MIDI Control Keyboard) - Name: Optional
3) MIDI Input: "Find" button
4) Press any key on the Keystation. Its name should appear in the field.
5) Choose
6) OK

Your keyboard should appear (with a "?" icon, but with a green check next to the "use with Reason" box)

7) Check in Preferences/Advanced Control that Bus A is assigned to the Keystation
8) Check in Preferences/Audio that the output is set to "Built-in Output".

If that's the case, activity and sound should show when you tap on your keyboard

Hi,

I want to point out that what appeared in the midilog showed up without me having to touch my keyboard a single time.

On Reason, I did everything, and everything is fine until I hit "find", then I can type on my keyboard as much as I want, nothing appears. I have set up all the buses, one by one, all together, nothing works. I really think there's nothing more that can be done now...

Your keyboard indeed has a problem.
It is recognized as a USB device, but the MIDI is malfunctioning and sends data without being prompted.

Some sort of damage. The most common: Drop, spilled liquid.
Return to sender.

It's certainly more expensive, but that's why I prefer new.

I'm definitely going to buy a new one indeed! In any case, a thousand thanks for your patience. If I can do anything in return... don't hesitate!
See you soon.

Please.
A new toy that doesn't work is frustrating.

If you want to stay with M-Audio, a basic keyrig is pretty good (but with no frills or special feel) for a small budget of 100 euros.
But it quickly gets more expensive if you want more controls and a more pleasant feel, like the Axiom for example.

If you play around a lot, a 61-key is ideal but bulky.
For some pads and electro leads, a 25 can suffice. But for me, the best compromise remains a 49-key.
Not too big on a desk + mouse + keyboard + speakers + amp + monitors

Happy shopping and good sessions.

Thank you again for your advice. I'm just an amateur pianist, but having been a musician for quite some time, I'm still looking to make "music" and not just "sounds". I'll try at least 49, and if possible 60 or even 80, but once again, it all depends on the price... With Christmas coming up, I could treat myself a little!
Anyway, thanks again, and I hope to see you very soon...

Hi. I went to M-Audio but in LEGACY, the XP driver for Midiman Keystation 49 for Service Pack 3 is available, but when I install it and connect the keyboard via USB, the installation wizard pops up... I go to the device manager and there's still a question mark on the keyboard's driver... That's the problem, actually.

I need someone to make a copy of the CD for me so I can install it or for someone to find it elsewhere, but I've searched everywhere online; this model seems to be too old, I think...

Other than that, to solve the issue, I'm connecting it via MIDI to an audio interface and via USB to a computer port, I'm using 5V (since I don't have the power supply anymore...).

The keyboard does not appear in USB Hardware, and it is plugged directly into the back of the Mac... I will try to find a power supply.

Is this keyboard new or used?
Have you seen it working before?
Are the indicators lit up properly (is the power button switched to on)? Silly question, but you never know...
Check that the USB port being used on the Mac is working by plugging in another device. The mouse, for example.
If you have a MIDI/USB interface (and a MIDI cable), try connecting it to the Mac this way.
If you have another machine (or even one from a neighbor), connect the keyboard to it to ensure it’s functioning properly.
