Hello everyone ...
I've got a little issue to share with you:
Since a recent crash of my PC, I'm having difficulties:
1. Unable to automatically update drivers via the assistant: I'm being asked to search manually or to insert the CD.
2. Plug and play no longer works (USB stick; camera): I'm being asked to insert the installation CD.

Until this recent crash, plug and play and the automatic driver updates were working ...

Any ideas?

There is a device whose driver is not up to date. You need to update your drivers then.

Hi,
To access the BIOS, it's during the startup of the computer, often it's the "del" key you need to press, it's written at the bottom of the first screen you see. (setup in English).
Then you navigate with the arrow keys while reading the instructions.
Be careful not to do anything reckless, take note of the changes in case of doubt, you can revert to the previous settings.

I also have the same kind of problem: my device manager shows two devices for which it cannot find the drivers.
The two devices are "Audio Modem Device" and "USB 2.0 Storage Device."
Updating the drivers for these two "devices" is unsuccessful, even with the native CD-ROM (Win-XP Pro) or the Win XP-SP2 CD-ROM.

My version of Windows is XP-Pro SP2.

What seems most bizarre to me is that Windows no longer searches for driver updates on the Internet (Windows Update), even though I specified to Windows to check there as well!!??

And it's not due to a virus or spyware: I have the AVAST antivirus running constantly and run Ad-Aware every week.

What should be done in such a case?

As for me, I found the solution by myself.

I had to manually redefine the folder to find the device drivers.

Since then, I haven't had any problems; updates are available again and my plug and play function is working again.

Furthermore, this mishap made me realize that fragmenting a disk is not always a good option, especially if you have an HP, because to reinstall the drivers if you need to, you must have previously made the master CDs which you cannot burn after fragmentation.

First, I’d like to open a parenthesis for our friend Olivier Caillau.

It's important to know that an antivirus and an antispyware are not without flaws and are certainly not sufficient. You need a firewall to be a bit more secure (you can also find free ones, ZoneAlarm offers a free version and Kerio is also free).
Therefore, it's good to have a firewall, two antispywares (Ad-Aware, Spybot, or others), an up-to-date antivirus, and occasionally perform an online scan with Secuser or Panda. Moreover, Avast is not the best of the best (personal experience), but it's better than nothing and it's free, which explains its success.

Regarding your problem specifically, have you tried to perform a system restore to a date prior to the PC crash? Do you know how to install drivers manually, using the installation CD of the modem or the USB key, or by downloading the drivers online?

I saw a solution for this type of problem that apparently is due to the 9box. So if you don’t have it, do not try this manipulation!!!!

Go to Start / Run
Type “regedit”
Then search for the registry key I indicated above:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion:DevicePath
By default, this entry must contain the information below (if you have a Neuf box)
[img]http://squaresoft.free.fr/usb01.gif[/img]
or the information below for non-owners of a Neuf BOX.
[img]http://squaresoft.free.fr/usb02.gif[/img]
Restart the PC and you're good to go.

For those who do not have the 9box, they can still try this:

Corruption of the file named: INFCACHE.1 located in “windows/inf”. Solution: delete this file, reboot, remove any faulty USB device (in the device manager), and try again.

OR

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
The REG_SZ_EXPAND type value named DriverCachePath must contain (at minimum) %SystemRoot%\Driver Cache (with at least “;” as separators if there are multiple values. A space between driver and cache is normal)

That's a lot of information at once... but I hope your solution is covered above!

It's been 2 weeks that I've been struggling through all the bios, system info, forums, etc. to get my digital camcorder to work!

After manually installing the drivers, I couldn't get it to be detected via my firewire by "pinnacle".

I have the Neuf Box, and the correction of the plug and play issue allowed the installation of the camcorder.... just barely avoiding the complete formatting that I was about to do, a bit desperate.

Really, thank you to you and all the stars of computing who help us every day on the forums!

Same for me, the webcam is working again (it's actually the Neuf Box that's causing the trouble)

However, I'm still having issues with my USB stick (storage). Do you have a similar procedure to make my stick work (like ""; %....")?

I indeed tried to update the driver for my screen, I went on allosdrivers.com but for Proview there's not much available!!!!! I got an ICC file that I can't open!!!!!!!

Don't use alllesdrivers.com... the drivers provided are not always good.
You can use the Everest software to find out everything that is in your PC in terms of hardware. I think you also have a link to the manufacturer. On their site, you will find the latest drivers that you need to install. The reference must be the same...

even though this post is old, I just wanted to clarify something about Soft Everest.
Soft Everest is too unreliable and often crashes while giving false information about your hardware and more. My advice is to use CPUZ, it's more efficient, more accurate, and above all, it doesn't mess up when providing info about your computer hardware. It's up to you; it's just a suggestion, and if you have doubts, do a little digging on Google and compare for yourself. :)

As for me, when I turn on my computer, even if I do nothing after a certain amount of time, I get the following error message: "The Plug and Play service has terminated unexpectedly" or "The [memory hole, sorry] DCOM service has terminated unexpectedly", and following this error message, the computer restarts.
