Hello,
When copying files from DVDs burned by my HP laptop to my new ACER Aspire AX 3810 desktop, the copy process is extremely slow for certain DVDs (ranging from 90 to 150 KB per second), taking about 3 hours to transfer the content of one DVD-R to the hard drive. I don't understand why this slowness occurs, as it doesn't affect all the burned DVDs.
Thank you for your insight. Is it possible to make any adjustments in Vista for copying files from a CD to the hard drive?
Philippe.

Hello,
the slowness of a PC can have several causes, here are a few:
- outdated programs and software (Flash, Java, Adobe, Windows, Browsers, etc)
- an infection
- old software or improperly uninstalled programs
- similar software installed in duplicate (conflicts)
- too many programs at startup
- defragmentation and disk cleaning not performed regularly
Check all these points. Do you possibly have too many programs at startup?

Thank you for the response,
I tried with another burned data DVD, larger files, and the copy-paste is much faster (about 6 minutes for 4GB of data). I also tried burning a multitude of gif, jpg, bmp files on a faster DVD (16x). The burning takes a few minutes, but the copy-paste from the DVD to the HDD is much longer (about half an hour), but still faster than the same files copied from an 8x DVD!!!
Is it normal for a burned data DVD containing many small files to take so long to be copied and pasted to a hard drive?
Thank you for your insight.- Yes, it's perfectly normal, even on a hard drive.
Archive them with Winrar 32 bit Winrar 64 bit is less time-consuming to archive and extract than to copy from a DVD or USB drive.

Thank you for your responses,
Aloes, my Acer PC is only 2 months old, and it's fast for everything except for copying and pasting folders containing small files. I don't think it's a PC cleaning issue, but rather a specific problem.
Fabul, do you think that burning compressed files into a large folder makes it easier to copy and paste from DVD-R to the hard drive? It's possible, I can try it for my next backups.
Could the problem be due to the verification of each small file to copy and paste, either by the antivirus or by Windows?
Thank you for your help, with you I will surely find the reason for the problem.

I said that from experience, it's not an idea I have.
"a check of every little file to copy-paste, either by the antivirus or by Windows"
that's right. -
Yes, indeed, it takes longer anyway. But I thought there was another problem because it's rare for a user to have their PC up to date.
Fildelinge, try archiving as fabul suggests, it will be quicker!

Thank you for your responses,
Even with a factory-made DVD to install Word 2002, I have the same problem. The copying of files before installing the program is slow, and the drive is reading/copying the files very choppily and slowly, whereas I didn't have this issue on my other PCs?
So there is a problem somewhere? But where? Could it still be that the drive is defective?
Thank you again.

Hello again,
Try updating your CD/DVD drive like this:
Right-click on your CD/DVD drive / then Properties / Hardware / Properties / Driver / Update driver.
See if it improves.

I am resending my message that I sent 15 minutes ago, it doesn't appear:
Try updating your driver:
Right-click on your CD/DVD drive / Properties / Hardware / Properties / Driver / Update Driver.
See if it gets better.

Hello and thank you all for your help,
I think I am going to contact ACER customer service, I see no other solution. I don't think it's the free antivirus Avira Antivir Personal, as I also installed it on my 5-year-old laptop and I have no issues. I also don't see how VISTA could slow down the reading or copying of a DVD? The driver is up to date, I tried drag and drop copy-paste, and unchecked the “remote differential compression” (control panel, programs and features, turn windows features on or off)...
Thanks again for taking some of your time, I will keep you updated.

Hello
it's completely normal that copying and pasting from an external source like a DVD or external hard drive to the PC hard drive is 2 to 5 times slower for me
copying and pasting a file already on the PC's hard drive to another file on the PC's hard drive has always been faster and nothing will change that, it has nothing to do with Java or the internet or cleaning cookies or history or anything else-
Thank you marlboro55 for your response,
It has been 10 years since I got into computing, and what you say is true, I've always noticed it. But in my specific case, copying and pasting is super slow, 4 times slower than on my "old laptop" that's 5 years old, while my Acer from August is a dual quad with 8GB of RAM, supposed to run much faster, with a latest generation DVD drive!
