How to connect my peekbox 300 to my pc

Hello,
I bought the Peekbox 300 for its Wi-Fi connection. I contacted Peekton's customer service, and I followed their instructions, but there's no result.
I have the Orange Livebox, and my Peekbox detects it. I managed to do the test, and I also got my Livebox to detect the Peekbox. But after that, nothing. I can't detect the Peekbox on my PC.
If someone has a solution, I would be very grateful for their help.
Thank you in advance
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

I have had the Peekbox 300 since April 2009. I am quite satisfied with this device. First of all, because I was looking for a modern "VCR" to replace my old VHS.
It works well except for the issue with the "T" for the antenna; it is definitely better to get a "splitter" with two outputs, which costs a few euros.

    Pros:
First, I don’t have aerial digital TV at home since I’m "de-serviced" in my public housing by Numericable. It works well in analog. The quality is of course significantly better than VHS.
Very nice aesthetic of the box that does not "clash" in a living room.
Very nice remote control that seems "sturdy".
Total silence, no fan, but I think it’s better to leave it uncovered, no stacking allowed.
    The interchangeable hard drive.
The important connectivity. Note that the SCART only serves as an output but not as an input. A 2.5mm USB hard drive case often makes the device "trip" because these drives are powered by the 5V from the USB port.

    Cons:
The network connection. I haven’t used Wi-Fi yet; I prefer the wired Ethernet network which is faster and more reliable.
But the need to switch the device to "NAS mode" is not convenient.
And especially, the connection seems quite erratic. When all goes well, you can find the Peekbox hard drive under "network favorites" in XP. But it often happens that the connection does not establish right away. Sometimes after a few seconds or even several minutes!
When the connection is established, there are very often incomprehensible disconnections. We can't always reconnect. Sometimes you have to stop NAS mode, or even restart the Peekbox; but for how long?
Transfers are slow: a movie in MPEG2 of about 4GB takes over 20 minutes to be copied to the computer.

Do you know a specific forum for the Peekbox 300? Or a site of a well-informed enthusiast offering plenty of useful little tips?

    Have a good evening everyone.

      Hi Domlas
I completely agree with your point of view; contrary to what I said earlier, the connection is also very random for me. I was just too pleased that it worked the first time. I can see the NAS network in my router settings, but I don't have access to it every time, at least on Windows 7, whereas it seems more reliable with XP.
As for the speed, we have to remember that it's Wi-Fi; I suppose it's faster with Ethernet.

Personally, I've used the playlist function, but I find it a bit buggy. How is it for you?
Just in case you're not familiar with the function, you select, for example, some MP3s, you press the red button to select the tracks and the green button to add to the playlist. You can do the same with images or videos. Then when you go to the playlist, you select at the top using the left or right arrows, either all, images, music, or videos. My concern is that I don't see the images, for example, if I choose images, or music if I choose music; I only have access to them by going to 'all,' but everything is mixed up, and if the list is long, it's hard to find your way around. Please confirm if you're having this issue; otherwise, I'll call customer support.

Otherwise, I am currently very satisfied with this device for the use I make of it.

Despite my promise during Christmas to test your various software modifications, I haven't had the time to get started. There are a lot of new computers to set up around me. Retirees, as we know, have all the time in the world for this kind of small services, but when you add a lot together, you end up busier than when you were working for the boss!

Actually, I think in the first instance I'll buy a JIGAPEEK 35 to bring the hard drive of the peekbox closer to my computer.
It's real, the ethernet connection is very unreliable. Sometimes it works right away, but most of the time it only establishes itself after several long minutes, and once established, it can stay active for over 2 hours (I had this luck once), but it can also drop out after just a few minutes.

All this for no apparent reason. I strongly think it's a "botched" job on the part of the embedded software regarding the ethernet connection.

Good evening (and happy new year, we still have the right until the 31st included!) to everyone.

I just received my peekbox 300 wifi, it's the second one in two months because the first one never worked, I sent it back thinking it was defective. It has the same symptoms that I will describe to you:
Media box not recognized by TV and PC via HDMI
      Recognized only via USB2
So I'm using the peekbox 300 wifi as an external hard drive with a cable !!!!!
Anyway, it's like the Middle Ages
      Can you help me?

To move things forward: [Almost Resolved]

Actually, there are two "locks" for reading/writing on the NAS share:
(1a) - The file /usr/local/etc/smb.conf is clearly "read only yes" and "writable no"... and unfortunately, there's no point in editing it by hand, it gets overwritten at boot
(2a) - As you understood, the partition "HDD2" is in ro

I coded a tiny script launched by /usr/local/etc/rcS
      #!/bin/sh killall -9 smbd killall -9 nmbd cp /usr/local/etc/smb.conf.rw /usr/local/etc/smb.conf (with smb.conf.rw which is writable readable) smbd -D nmbd -D mount -t ntfs -o /tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD2 2> /tmp/debug_remount.log chmod a+wxr -R /tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD2 exit 0

But the partitions are not yet launched when /usr/local/bin/rcS runs :(
      two possibilities:
(1b) - Put a sleep so that the script launches "late"
(2b) - Find which programs run last, other than those in /etc/ since they are hard-coded in a read-only image of the system, decompressed at each boot and would need to be recompiled.

      good night, bearded ones!!

For my part, I only use the peekbox to record TV programs to watch them later or as a reminder of certain information. It's often amusing to pull out a news report six months later, for example, that stated exactly the opposite of what is currently being supported.
Moreover, I wasn't looking for "high definition" at all costs. MKV, HD TV, H264 were absolutely not the mandatory criteria for choice. For me, TV is not home cinema. I don't have a projection room at home to watch an image on a 4-meter screen. I'm a fan of hifi sound but not of the "boom-boom" surround sound and others.
Also, this aesthetically understated peekbox, which is complete and requires few connections, seemed perfect to me.

In fact, the network disk function is not perfect, far from it. I know what I'm talking about, having had a Synology NAS on the ethernet network for 3 years, which allows me to access the common files stored on it from any computer.

I thought I would find this same function with the Peekbox.
In fact, we are far from it. First, the obligation to switch the peekbox to "NAS mode" means that this machine is not accessible on the network at all times. Not to mention that during NAS mode, you can no longer use the peekbox to view or record TV.

And finally, this instability, which is also random in the network connection (NAS function), which is real even in wired mode, I confirm, significantly reduces the appeal of this device.

I'm looking (and cannot find) a forum or a club or some enthusiasts related to this peekbox who could provide information or research leads.

I think, but I'm not strong in this area, that this peekbox runs on Linux and should therefore be considerably improved, as Linux is quite malleable.

    What do you think?

    Hello,

I found out why I couldn't write on HDD2. The Samba configuration file (/usr/local/etc/smb.conf) is set to prevent writing on HDD2:
    [part2]
    guest ok = yes
    comment = HDD Partition 2
    path = /usr/local/etc/hdd/volumes/HDD2
    writable = no
    read only = yes

    By replacing it with:
    writable = yes
    read only = no
    I can write on HDD2

      Hello JJ,

How do you access the file: /usr/local/etc/smb.conf?
When I type that line of code, it replies: permission denied

      Thanks.

Where did you find this config file?
And there is an error in your post by replacing:
writable = no, isn’t it supposed to be 'yes'?
      Thanks.

    Hello
I just bought the Peekbox 300 as well and I’m quite satisfied with it.
I actually just did the setup for mine tonight; since the manual is not very well documented, I was worried I would have to enter an IP address as indicated in the manual without specifying the address. In fact, just launching the NAS gave me direct access on my PC by going into the network favorites. I didn’t do anything else; sorry I can’t help you because it works by itself for me. I also have access to the PC through the Peekbox.
Did you properly set up your Wi-Fi network beforehand? It’s true that mine being unsecured makes it easier, but with the Livebox, you have to enter the WAP key. Did you press the button on the Livebox to sync?

      Hi,
thank you for your response, I managed to make the connection between the two a few days ago.
On the other hand, it's great for reading directly from the hard drive on the PC, but the transfer when you want to copy from the PC to the hard drive is extremely slow.
      Best regards.
      See you later.

"super long transfer": have you connected the PC and DDM via ethernet / USB / wifi?

otherwise you have the solution with the jigapeek: this way, you can connect the HDD directly to the PC as an external HDD, and of course, it's very fast (less than 1 minute for a 700 MB file if I remember correctly)

        Hello tazde47,

I'm in the same situation you experienced with the Wi-Fi connection; I can't see the disk of my peekbox 300.
        The connection test is OK,
How did you resolve the issue?
        Thank you for your response.

        Best regards

And by the way, a question for both of you: do you have any sound issues with the peekbox 300?
(Jovy, I think I already asked you this question on homecinema-fr :D)

I just received my second unit, and I'm still having the same problem as before: the sound "drops" regularly (meaning sound cuts out for a fraction of a second to 2-3 seconds max)

It's quite annoying, and since that's the only downside of this device in my opinion, I'd really like to solve this issue.... :s

      Hello Ithaque.

I have the same problem as you, the sound cuts out regularly.
I've tried connecting via SCART and other connections, but still the same issue.
      Have you found a solution?

      Thanks,

    Hi
Sorry Ithiak if you already asked me the question, I often wait for the email response regarding this, having received nothing I didn't get back.
Regarding your question, I haven't noticed this sound issue, but my opinion may not be very reliable as I haven't used it much so far (barely ten hours on TNT)

Otherwise, after my pleasant surprise I mentioned about the network, I wanted to reconnect yesterday and it was impossible even though my router detects the NAS network well, I can't access it. Anyway, as tazde47 says, it's very slow via Wi-Fi, plus you can't write to the NTFS partition, you can only access it via direct USB connection, so I only use this Wi-Fi connection for small files like photos and to rename my recordings that I want to keep, it's quicker than using the virtual keyboard on the TV.

Has anyone tried the playlist function? For my part, it bugs a little, I can add music, photos, or videos, but they only appear in the "all" list, not in image and video, so I have to search for my images to launch among all the files, not always easy since you can't see the end of the name and thus its extension.

Hello everyone, I think you can help me with my Wi-Fi problem. Just like the first one, I have detected my network and the Wi-Fi test is fine. But I can't find how to access my hard drive from my PC! I've searched thoroughly, but I can't find it!
I should mention that I have Vista. Thank you for your help.

PS: Ithaca, nobody has your problem!

Hi, I also received my Peekbox 300 this week and I already have a few issues. 1. To access the files I share on my PC. I am using Windows 7 and it asks for a username and password in the NET section on the Peekton to access the files on my PC. I tried typing in the one provided by Windows 7 in the residential mode, but nothing worked. I tried many passwords, even admin admin like for the Livebox, or left it blank, and nothing, login fail, even though I have disabled the password in Windows 7. Actually, I've tried everything! I don't have this problem with the shared files from my daughter's PC, which is running Windows XP. There, I have access without being asked for a password. Another problem is with the reception of web radios; as soon as the search is finished, the Peekbox shuts down and then restarts. Sometimes it only finds one single list of radios, and when I try to access them after the search, it shuts down. I still haven't managed to access these radios! The third problem, but I think it's due to the TNT broadcast: I've done several searches but it never finds TF1. By the way, M6 was found but the reception is terrible, lots of blocks. While the other TNT tuners in the house did not have this problem picking up TF1. Other than that, nice design and the 1TB removable hard drive is a good idea. Before, I had the Peekton4 with a 500GB IDE hard drive, but the hard drive had some issues, so we changed it...

    Hello

I see that you are having network issues too; as for me, I’ve given up, I don’t feel the need for it too much. If I want to transfer files occasionally, I just plug it in via USB. It would indeed be very convenient if I didn’t have to activate this NAS network every time.
Otherwise, while watching a movie recorded tonight, it freezes on one frame and it's impossible to go any further. I managed to get past the critical point by fast-forwarding; I hope it’s just a temporary bug.

I don’t know if you use the playlist, personally I think it’s nice to have pictures looping on the screen with music during a get-together with friends. It worked at first, but it’s no longer working even after resetting to default settings. I think I’ll call customer service next week.

Otherwise, the main function of this device is still good; it records movies in good quality. (I’ll see if I change my mind this week; I’m receiving a 102 cm LCD TV to replace my old tube screen.) The remote control, after a rocky start due to the odd layout of the buttons, is ultimately easy to use.
I’m waiting to see how it goes with my new TV and hope I don’t have this freezing issue too often like I did today.

I'm quite disappointed with this PeekBox 300. Unlike Jovy, I chose this equipment because it was one of the few that had the NAS function to facilitate file transfers between this peekbox in my living room and the rest of my network located in the basement.
This is for photos but especially for DivX videos. Yes, I know DivX is not as good, but I'm not a fan of TV on a 10 m² screen sitting pretentiously; I'm more of a fan of small TVs hidden away in a corner but in multiple rooms with minimal clutter of cables.

I don’t even think about copying files via USB: I'm not going to disassemble the Peekbox every time to bring it closer to my computer.

So I'm terribly disappointed. Not so much by the fact that I have to specifically activate the NAS but by the fact that the connection is completely random.

I'm therefore thinking of getting the USB hard drive connection kit to get around the difficulty, but I remain very disappointed.

      Good evening.

    Hi Domlas

I understand your disappointment if that's what you were expecting.
For my part, it's also very random; since the wifi connection is slow, I bought a powerline adapter to retrieve the network through the electrical current. I'm testing it and very disappointed as well; it's not very fast either and it often crashes. Moreover, my PC running Windows 7 doesn't recognize it while it works under XP.
I bought this powerline kit because I just treated myself to a Sony TV with network functions for Christmas. Thanks to this powerline adapter, I can easily see everything on my PC with very little lag; a movie streams very well without stuttering, but the quality is awful compared to the same movie viewed directly from the peekbox.

So I think there is an issue with this peekbox NAS server.
I saw that there are NAS servers that function continuously without having to activate the function each time, but here it might be normal since it also acts as a player, recorder, and TNT decoder. It seems to me that the existing NAS servers only serve this function, so it is activated all the time.

As I mentioned earlier, I bought it to have a TNT decoder and multimedia player, and for that main function, it works very well, except for the playlist function which works a bit poorly. However, if people buy it for its network function, it’s better to look elsewhere; it’s still a pity. They even went as far as delivering a wifi key, but it's quite useless. They would have been better off selling it only for its TNT recorder function, and they would have a good percentage of satisfied customers for that main function.

Merry Christmas to everyone! I'm very satisfied with my gift (Sony 102 cm LCD TV), which works very well with a remote control that is much more practical and logical than that of the peekbox. I have the impression that this remote control was designed by someone who reads from right to left, as the buttons on this remote seem backwards. However, you do get used to it with practice.

In fact, it is possible to use the NAS every time by tinkering a bit:

Access the Linux busibox "firmware" of the peekbox via Telnet: telnet 192.168.0.xxx use the login name root without a password.

Add the commands: nmbd -D and smbd -D to the /usr/local/etc/rcS file which will allow to start the samba services at boot and for your xp, vista, or seven network to detect the NAS if your box is powered on, even if you are not in "NAS" mode in the setup.

More details here: http://aivx385hdrw.free.fr/ and here: https://forum.hardware.fr/hfr/Hardware/Materiels-problemes-divers/peekbox-300-samba-sujet_856187_1.htm

I am looking for a solution to make the NTFS partition writable. If you have any ideas...

Thank you for your response, Grosdod.

But I don't know much about Linux command lines. However, I did know the MS-DOS era and even PCM+!
It's amazing how quickly we forget!
I was still able to "enter" the peekbox thanks to "Putty" with a telnet command.

I did see on the screen (black background and white text, very nostalgic...) "the prompt" with the typical messages "busybox version 3.1.1" etc., etc...

But from there, I have no idea how to add the commands you mentioned to the rcS file.

Would it be too much to ask for a kind of tiny tutorial, for example, detailing how to do it?

Thank you in advance anyway and "MERRY CHRISTMAS"! ! !

Bof, for my part, even though I've also known DOS, PCM, and other GW-BASIC, Linux is still an unknown world for me. I discovered this just last night. So you can quickly find online how to add lines to a text file in Linux.

    There are two methods:
    - the command line method detailed here: http://aivx385hdrw.free.fr/addHDD2rw.PNG You just have to repeat the operation by changing what is in quotes.
    /usr/local/etc/rcS
    - The method that uses the Linux vi editor. you type vi /usr/local/etc/rcS and use vi according to the following tutorial: http://matrix.samizdat.net/pratique/documentation/guide-survie-VI.html

That being said, type the commands: nmbd -D, smbd -D, mount -o remount,rw /tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD2 and chmod 777 /tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD2 in the command line to check that you get the desired result (Hard drive visible on the network, and NTFS partition writable). If it's good, you can add them to the rcS file.

Despite all this, it still happens from time to time that the hard drive disconnects during the transfer of large files and that the NTFS disk writing parameters revert to "read only" (I don't know why). I used one of the scripts from the website mentioned above to automatically restart all these commands. You will find it at http://dl.free.fr/getfile.pl?file=/crQ1ybpN You will need to modify the .TXT file to insert your local IP address in place of mine.

There you go, you have all the keys for the operation. I want to add that I am not a Peekton technician and that this tinkering is obviously without any warranty, I do not know if it voids the warranty of the device, nor if a bad manipulation can cause it damage.

    Best regards and happy holidays.

      Hello,
I am completely new to a peekbox 300.
I am trying by all means to do some tests to record (REC)
      Impossible;
the manual is not explicit at all.
Who can help me understand how to connect my devices together!
      Thank you

1st point: you need to connect the PB to your TV.
Either it's an old model that only has the "SCART" plug, in which case you will have to connect the SCART output of the PB to that of the TV
Or you have a recent TV with an HDMI port, in which case you connect the HDMI output of the PB to the TV using an HDMI cable which is not supplied and therefore needs to be purchased.

At worst, with an "exotic" TV that has neither SCART nor HDMI, you need to hope that this TV has "jack" inputs for video (yellow) and audio channels left/right (black and red)

Next, you need to connect the TV antenna. The small downside: the PB does not act as an antenna "relay," so you will need to get a low-loss splitter with 1 input/2 outputs. One of the outputs connected to the antenna socket of the PB, the other to the antenna socket of the TV

If the PB does not come with a hard drive, you will need to install one (preferably new or at least not containing important data as they will be erased).

Connect the power supply and turn it on (red toggle button).
Normally, the front light of the PB will blink blue for about 1 minute and then remain solid. In this case, the TV should have switched to the external input (SCART or HDMI); if not, do it manually.

A home page should appear with large icons, and you can switch from one to another using the "right" or "left" arrow keys on the remote control.

You will need to set up the TV channels either under analog TV for those who do not have DTT yet or DTT.

Once these settings are done, choose the channel to record with the PB remote control. You should then be able to view this channel on the TV.
To record, just press the small red button in the upper left corner of the remote control. A single press starts the recording (after a few seconds) for an indefinite duration. If you press it multiple times in a row, you limit the recording duration to 30 - 60 minutes, etc. A red light to the left of the blue one lights up and indicates that recording is in progress.
You can then go watch another channel (on the TV) by closing the "external" connection and selecting a channel with the TV remote control.

To stop the recording, press the "stop" button to the right of "play" on the PB remote control.
For playback of the recorded videos, you will need to set the TV back to "monitor" (on the SCART or HDMI input) and then press the "RECLIST" button (above "TIMER," which is itself above the "1" - "4" - "7" buttons).
The list of recorded videos will then appear along with a "thumbnail" for viewing. Select the desired video with the "up" / "down" keys (surrounding "OK" in the center) and press "PLAY."

The "TIMER" button allows you to schedule recordings by choosing the channel, day, time, image quality, end time, and whether or not to repeat the recording every day, every week, etc.

PS: If the hard drive is completely new (or has never been used on a PB), you will first need to format it and partition it using the specific function of the PB. A FAT32 partition and an NTFS one are planned. Since only the FAT32 is used for video recordings, it is wise to increase its size at the expense of the NTFS, which is not very useful on the PB.

    Hello everyone,

I also bought this box which is very well made. But I am also encountering some difficulties.
With an HDMI connection, it is impossible to start the box. The blue LED keeps flashing non-stop. If I unplug the HDMI cable, then the blue LED stays on! With a YUV connection, no problem. Just a note, my drive is 320 Giga.

I do not have access to web radio (one of the reasons that made me buy this box!). The radios are loading, in the genre tab appears "top 25 streams" and when I confirm = black screen then back to the DTV page.

No visibility of the box when the NAS function is activated under Win XP Pro. I will follow with interest the information provided in this forum.

    Best regards.

The result of my research: 50/50
I managed to see the box on my favorite network: Zone Alarm settings required.
The commands nmbd -D and smbd -d work.
However, access for reading and writing to the HDD in FAT is okay, but not writable on the HDD in NTFS.
The commands mount -o remount,rw /tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD2 and chmod 777 /tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD2 do not work.

Info: to delete files from the box using the remote, you need to use the menu button...

Still no web radio or connection possible with the HDMI cable.

    Try with chmod -R 777 /tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD2

If you type mount, does your partition "part2" show up as "ro" (read only) or "rw" (read write)?

      Hi Grosdod,

Thanks for your reply and happy new year to you. I will try this command line when I get the device back. I sent it to customer service for the little issues mentioned earlier.
      See you later.

    Hello everyone,
following a data transfer via USB, my TV no longer detects my peekbox, and it is continuously flashing (blue power LED). I tried pressing the buttons on the remote control, but nothing works.
    Can you help me, thanks.

How is it connected to your TV?

I received my peekbox back from customer service! That's great, but nothing has changed! A terse "no faults found" for an explanation.
Now I can finally look into this connection issue with the NAS server.

In the meantime, I have a few questions:
    1) Do you have access to the web radio?
    2) When we want to navigate via the peekbox on different devices, there is the NET. We can access our PC. But there are passwords. Do you know how to set them up?

    Thank you.

    Hello

    peekBox 300
    a) unable to connect from the PeekBox 300 to a samba server (1 network HD ..)
    - from my PC to the server OK 100%
    - from the peekbox: KO!

    b) does anyone know how to change the mshome network name to that of the local network?
    example:
in browser / net, the nas appears as mshome/nas/part1
my network is named "chezmoi" ...
so I would like to change mshome to chezmoi
(maybe this is the cause of a) ??

    Thank you for your help...

I have also asked myself the same question.

I renamed my internal network to something other than the "mshome" imposed by Gros Billou.
My entire network works perfectly: 3 computers, two network printers, a Synology NAS.

However, there is no way to configure my network name (other than mshome) on the Peekbox.

Could this be the reason for my sporadic and random connections with the PB?

So if anyone has information on this subject, it would be welcome!

        Hi,

In theory, it's in the smb.conf file. There should be a value "workgroup=mshome" to change... I will check when my box has restarted. Right now, I have the blue blinking light problem due to data transfer via SATA on a PC... Has anyone received a response from Peekton about this?

If I understand correctly, you temporarily installed the hard drive from the motherboard directly connected via SATA on your computer?

Upon re-reading the "very brief" manual for the motherboard, it is clearly stated that the hard drive must be formatted by the PeekBox for it to be usable. This likely means that at least part of the specific software necessary for the operation of the motherboard needs to be installed on it.
The fact that the blue LED keeps flashing indicates that the motherboard is unable to start.
To check, I would install a new hard drive (either new or one whose files are no longer important) and initiate the formatting process, partitioning.
If everything starts up normally after that, it means the motherboard is functioning properly and the hard drive contains the error.
Then I would reconnect that hard drive to the SATA connection on the computer to recover all the important files.
Afterward, I would reformat it on the motherboard.

In fact, I connected via USB with a SATA adapter to transfer files, cut ads, etc... Upon returning to the PB, the adventures of the flashing blue diode...

I confirm that it is necessary to format the disk in the PB: first, it is stated in the instructions, and it is reiterated in the "additional technical note (well hidden on the Peekton site: https://www.hugedomains.com/domain_profile.cfm?d=peekton&e=com ).

For my problem, I did as you said: backup of files, deletion of partitions, and reformatting in the box.

However, this problem seems to be recurring on Peekboxes (http://forum.a3france.fr/sutra367.php&sid=a8ab907bf06d18083955d40f6acefa74). To be continued...
