Connecting a Windows 7 PC to a Windows 10 PC on a local network?

Hello,
I would like to create a local network between two PCs, one running Windows 7 and the other Windows 10 (Mac via Bootcamp), but I'm having trouble.
I've tried a lot of things, but when I connect them via Ethernet, it shows "identifying."
Do I need to use a crossover cable because of the different versions W7-10?
Should I go through my router, a switch, or a hub?
Because I assume it doesn't make sense to modify the IP addresses of the PCs as long as I don't have a stable connection...

I also tried to create an ad hoc network with the W7 PC, but I can't connect to it with the W10 PC.

Best regards

Pierre

    Hi,
what exactly do you want to do and in what environment?
the simplest way is to connect both to the router, they will be networked automatically.

I want to play in a local network with two players, but I don't necessarily need the internet.
I have connected them to the router and they can see each other, but I can't connect.
When I am in the network interface and click on one of the computers, it asks me for the username and password, but it doesn't work.

    Thank you.

    Hello
I have the same connection problem. Could you please specify the settings to change?
I have followed some discussions regarding the permissions to modify, but nothing works.
On the W7, I can see the W10 but I cannot open the shared folder.
On the W10, I cannot see the W7 with its shared file.
Thank you in advance. Best regards.
