No entry on new application (Skype)

Solved

Hello everyone,

I have a little question that may seem "basic" to experienced Mac OS users.

About a week ago, I installed Skype on my Macbook. I know that when you install a new application that isn’t signed by Apple, a forbidden sign appears on the icon of said software until we have opened it several times.
But now, no matter how many times I open and close it, that forbidden sign won't go away!

The Skype application works perfectly fine, but it’s mainly the aesthetic aspect of it that bothers me, lol.

You can find out more here, here’s a screenshot: http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3436/iconesensinterdit.png

Hoping to hear from you soon, thank you in advance for your help!

Re-Good evening everyone!

To all those who followed the topic, the problem resolved itself... simply by launching the Skype application, the prohibited icon disappeared and was replaced by the software icon!

See here:
before resolution; http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3436/iconesensinterdit.png
after resolution; http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/481/iconesensinterdit2.png

Thank you all for your help and the attention you paid to my problem.
Wishing everyone a great continuation, and see you soon on commentcamarche.net.

Hello.
This icon represents software written for Mac OS 9 classic. A version that remained installable under OS X.3, I believe.

If you can launch it, you must have an old OS X and OS 9 installed, right?

Hello caipirinha,

First of all, thank you for this initial response.

However, I am running Mac OS X version 10.5.8, and the version of Skype in use is the latest one (2.8.0.659), which can be found here: https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/

This (prohibited) icon has appeared every time I’ve installed software from the Internet (aMSN, Bento, LiquidCD, Cyberduck, etc.).

Upon the first launch of a new application, a message typically appears stating "This software comes from the Internet and cannot be verified; are you sure you want to run the software?", I click "Yes", and after launching the software a few times, the prohibited icon is replaced by the app’s icon. Except for Skype, where the prohibited icon remains...

Curious.
The message is usual, but I've never had this icon, neither before nor after.
I have no response to give you.

Hello,

I know that when you install a new unsigned application from Apple, a no-entry sign is placed on the icon of the said software until we have opened it several times.

No, this behavior is absolutely abnormal. Normally, this icon indicates a version that is incompatible with the current OS. Often, this is indeed for an older version of Mac OS. Normally, you should never see this icon

However, by going to the link given earlier, you are downloading a .exe version, which is for Windows!!

So, the question is, do you have a Windows or PC emulator on this Mac?? .. and without realizing it, are you using applications for PC??

Best regards

Hello Sanspseudo,

As for me, when I click on the link leading to the Skype download page, I do arrive at the page dedicated to Apple Mac OS X.

I assure you, I am using a Mac version of Skype, not a Windows emulation version at all.

I have noticed that this icon (prohibition sign) appears every time I install a new application downloaded from the Internet (whether signed by Apple, like Bento, or not). As mentioned earlier, this prohibition icon always appears for a certain number of launches of the application, then disappears and is replaced by the original application icon.

I randomly tried uninstalling Skype from my MacBook (using AppCleaner), re-downloading and reinstalling, but to no avail, this prohibition sign is still present instead of the Skype icon... it makes no sense!

Anyway, thanks for your help, Sanspseudo.

I don't know how it's possible, but the link indicated always leads to a download for Windows, a file that is named exactly "SkypeSetup.exe" ?? `and .exe = Windows, not Mac OS.
I don't understand..., why can there be a difference between 2 Macs???

I also end up on a Mac page. And everything seems perfect. But when I click on "Download," the site sends me a PC version!!

The Mac version, on the other hand, I can find here

The leopard may not be so comfortable in the powder.
The author and I are still on 10.5

I just tested it with my old iMac G5, running OS 10.5, and it’s exactly the same
By the way, after clicking on the link provided above, then on "Download", I get an explicit window about the required configuration... so the mystery deepens ;-)

Edit:
and if I do "copy link" on "Download", I get a link that is not specific to Mac OS

I think I found the explanation.
I have a third-party firewall. And with this tightly secured firewall, I prevent the remote server from seeing my configuration (http data..), thus the Skype site provides me, by default, with the Windows version. If I allow access to the http info, I do indeed receive a Mac version.
Conclusion, the Skype service does not provide the requested version, but rather the version it deems suitable for the requesting computer. Which is silly, as it prevents downloading a version to install on another computer. However, when I request the Linux version, I get it... poorly designed Skype site :-)

Good evening

That's something, failing to solve the mystery of the inappropriate icon.

The story of the icon may mean that the "Launch Services" of Mac OS needs to be rebuilt .. surprising in this case, but who knows.
In such a case, the Mac "doesn't know what to do with a given file, it doesn't know which application is linked to which file. Onyx can rebuild these services. One could then assume that the signature of the Skype application is misinterpreted by Mac OS.. but all this is just a lead ... it would be good to test it maybe anyway, just to make progress ...
