It accepts "MPEG, MPEG2" formats.... I'm not sure about ".DAT" files
If you want to convert any video files, you must not exceed the resolution "720*576" and you need to set the audio encoder (or codecs in some software) to "Mp2"; otherwise, the sound will be gone
For more details, record a video with the "7100 usb" that will be saved to your flash disk or external USB drive, then plug it into your PC... in the file properties, there are no details, so open it with a video converter (Xilisoft for example) and you will see both the codecs and the audio and video formats
