Header not displaying Solved

Question

Hello,

I have a little problem with headers and footers in Word 2003... But from what I understand, it's still a bit of a hassle...

So here it is: I want the header and footer on the first page to be different from the others. I made a section break type page break at the end of the first page and I disabled "link to previous" in the toolbar.
It works on all pages EXCEPT on the second where the footer appears but the header does not exist...

I'm going to go crazy if this continues...

Hello,

To start, the section break is unnecessary when it is only the first page.
You just need to check "Different first page" in the layout options (File menu, Page setup, Layout tab).

From there, the headers and footers will not be linked. Just treat them one by one.

I forgot to mention that I also made this section jump because I wanted the page numbering to start on the second page...

And this still does not explain the fact that I have absolutely no headers on the second page.

Indeed, when I double-click on a header or footer, normally all headers and footers are highlighted (dashed border, outer text gray, and inner text dark) but here nothing appears at the top, not even a tab!!!

I believe it must be a malfunction... What do you think?

I forgot to mention that I also made this section break because I wanted the page numbering to start on the second page...  Unjustified section break and still just as useless. If the first page is different, it allows you to choose what you want to put on it, and nothing if you wish! So, the numbering can very well start from the 2nd page, at 1, 2, or 100... I would add that the fewer section breaks we have, the better off we are. It's the least easy thing to manage in Word.  Indeed, when I double-click on a header or a footer, normally all the headers and footers are highlighted (dashed box, gray text outside, and dark text inside) but here nothing shows up at the top not even a tabulation!!!  I think it must be a malfunction  A malfunction of what? Of your document, probably! I've put plenty of effort into this issue to be able to say that, and I've tried your solution a thousand times to know that it doesn't work...
I invite you to try it yourself. I believe that without a section break, the best result you will get is to have no page number on the first page and a 2 on the second!
Anyway, this issue is resolved so let's not dwell on it any longer.

What I'm interested in today is why I don't even have the background template of the header on the second page while I do have it on all the following ones, and the header of the third page is linked to the previous one (that is, the second) and appears normally...

AND I found it!!! It was precisely because the "different first page" checkbox was checked!!! Indeed, when there is a section break, the first page is actually the first page of the section and not of the document!!!
No failure indeed, thank you for making me think of that!!!!

So, with so much distrust, I come to introduce myself (something I don't usually do): m@rina, author of numerous books on Word, MVP Word.
So I'm not going to test something I know by heart!!!
The topic you mention has a different issue, which is to start pagination on page 5!

Nice to meet you m@rina. Let me introduce myself: Léo, a new member of the forum and not very skilled in office work...

However, it seems to me that I am right and that you may not be entirely wrong.

I believe we have a communication problem from the outset:

I inserted a section break of the page break type before the second page of my document because I wanted:

- the first page of my document not to be numbered (cover page of an internship report)
- the second page of my document to be numbered 1 (i.e., the numbering starts at the second page with the number 1)

It is strictly the same issue as the topic mentioned previously (thanks to it I solved my problem back then).

As your example shows, and as I indicated in my previous message, without a section break it is indeed possible to ensure that there is no page number on the first page but a number 2 on the second when I wanted to have a number 1.

Finally, the tool "Insert - Page Number - Format - Page Numbering - From ..." only serves to define from which number we want to start the pagination and not from which page, as you probably already know.

However, I thank you very much for the recommended link... and I am really sorry for insisting like this.

I believe that beyond a communication problem, it's a perception problem...

In the given example: at the top of the second page = "Page number 2" in big letters!!!

Maybe you picked the wrong example!!!

I’m explaining the problem we had!!!

Here it is:

- The example you gave me opened by default in Open Office on my computer (which I hadn't noticed) and therefore modified the document settings, particularly the pagination settings... which explains why the header on the second page displayed "page number 2"... I hope you understand my confusion!!!

- I didn’t understand how it could be different to start the pagination on page 1 or on page 5!!! To me, it was the same!!! And no, because I hadn't realized that the "starting from" tool could start at 0!!! And especially that the zero wasn't visible!!! Why isn't there similarly a "starting from -1, -2..."? I must admit that it’s really not great...

Thank you again for your patience, and I'm sorry for insisting, but I prefer to understand something rather than apply it blindly...
