Help, my computer has reset!

Hello,
today, my PC was on like almost every day, and I had a power cut. When I turned the PC back on, I no longer had my background image. I wasn’t too worried and thought I would restore the background, but the problem is that all my desktop icons disappeared, as well as all my files, documents, photos, etc... that I had stored. Apparently, everything has been wiped from the hard drive (and I don’t have a backup...). My internet favorites also disappeared, however, my computer is still named the same as before, and there is still the photo I used for my name. Looking at the capacity of my hard drive, I see that out of a capacity of 153 Gb (it’s a 160 Gb HD), there are 141 Gb free, whereas I definitely had much more occupied space than that. If all my desktop icons disappeared, there appeared one without any label, and if I right-click on it, I can only delete or cut...

Does anyone know what happened and how to recover my PC to how it was before? Some programs are still installed, like my Panda antivirus, my printer, a brick-breaking game, my license plate software, etc...

Thank you all for any help you could provide.

Hello.

Restart in Safe Mode.
by tapping the F8 key as soon as the PC starts, but depending on the brand
of the PC, it may also be other keys, F2, F3, F4, etc..
This way you should see a screen like this:
Safe Mode.
Safe Mode with Networking.
Command Prompt in Safe Mode.
Etc..

select Safe Mode.
Then,
Start\Run\ , then type regedit.exe
Expand the branch
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\
Identify the key starting with
S-1-5..... and having a large number of digits ending with .bak.
Look for another key starting with S-1-5 and having exactly the same values
but without the .bak at the end, then simply add .bak to the end, and
remove the .bak from the key that contains it.
(By right-clicking on them and then Edit).
Exit and restart.

Hello again,

while searching a bit, I found all my files, programs, etc. under: My Computer, Documents & Settings, etc., but for my internet payment program, if I want to retrieve it on my current desktop, how do I do that? Or better, how can I get my computer to start with the old desktop?

Thanks.

See you later.
