Hi!!

8 bits = 1 byte (that's why we say byte, there’s the root OCTO which means 8)

1 BYTES = 1 byte (bytes is just used by Americans and some other countries)

So 4.7Go=4.7GB
it's a language difference.

1 gigaoctet = 1 gigabyte.

Thank you for your responses, but why is it that on my blank DVDs it says 4.7GB and next to it 120 min, while I've seen blank DVDs that say 4.7GB and next to them 240 min? So doesn't that mean the same thing?

  120 or 240 minutes is a vague indication, and by the way, what kind of minutes are those? Video, audio,...?
  It all depends on the compression format! For example, Mpeg2 or wave formats take up more space than Dvix (Mpeg4) or Mp3!
  
  In any case, rest assured, 4.7GB is equal to 4.7GB.

  Attention à ne pas confondre GB, Gb (majuscule sur le b) et Go, en effet Go = GB c'est une différence de langue, un byte = un octet mais Gb = gigabit en français !
  Pour le stockage, il est généralement utilisé GB ou Go, mais pour des débits, il est souvent utilisé Gb !
  Exemple : 512 kb/s qui représente 512/8 = 64 ko/s
  Voilà, après pour tes DVD 4.7 GB = 4.7 Go et pour les minutes tout dépend du format de compression comme te l'a indiqué Beert

  Windows counts in binary bytes > 1Gio/GiB = 1024Mio/MiB (2^10) = 1048576kio/kiB (2^20) = 1073741824bytes/Bytes (2^30) but uses the prefixes of the decimal system, which mainly serves to mislead everyone.
  
  A 4.7Go/GB (in decimal) DVD = 4.36Gio/GiB (in binary)

4.7 GB = 4,928,307 bytes = 4.7 * 2^20
4.7 Gb = 4,700,000 bytes = 4.7 * 10^6

it's a business practice that multiplies by 1000 (10^3) instead of 1024 (2^10), allowing for the announcement of higher but false hard disk capacities.

  Instead of spreading your "knowledge," learn to write the abbreviations correctly: GB for gigabyte, B = byte, b = bit
  
  And since a byte = 1 octet, there is no 5% difference, no, 4.7GB = 4.7Go because contrary to what you claim, in 1 kilobyte there are 1000 bytes and not 1024, 1024 is for a kibibyte.

An OCTET is a sequence of 8 bits as indicated by the root OCT (Octagon, octal, etc...)
BIT = BINARY DIGIT, and consequently a digit can only take 2 values, 0 or 1

thus an octet can take 256 (2^8) different values
1Ko = 2^10 octets, or 1024
1Mo = 2^10 Ko etc...
