Excel formula to display months (numbers) in words

Hello,
I created a table in EXCEL, in the first column I put the date and in the second I put "month" with the formula: =IF(A4="","",MONTH(A4))
The result gives me the month in numbers, but what I'm interested in is having it in words.
Is that possible?

You just need to use this function

=TEXT(30*MONTH(A4),"mmmm")

easier than a custom function:

First solution: modify the cell format
Enter a custom format "mmmm" which will display a date field
as a month in words.
Right-click on the cell > Format Cells > Custom > Type "mmmm" in the Type field.
Note: The cell retains the same value, only the display has changed.

Second solution: convert the date field to text
The TEXT function allows you to convert a numeric field into a text field while respecting a specified format.
You can also convert a date field into a text field.
In your case, you can write in B4 for example:
=TEXT(A4,"mmmm")
This time B4 contains indeed a text and no longer a date.

Hello, I opted for the first solution. Except that the month written in full is not the right one. Yet when it was in digits it was correct. formula =month(serial_number), it gives me 2. When I change the format to "mmmm" it writes January. Great. But for the day of the week it's the same. formula =weekday(serial_number;2), it writes 7 which is correct but when I convert "dddd" it tells me that it's Saturday instead of Sunday.

Your cell A4 must contain a valid date.

Otherwise, use the function from the Permalink (#5)

@ cultissime: you need to set the first day of the week. You have 2 options, either you define the first day of the week as Sunday, in which case your 7th day is indeed a Saturday, or you define Monday as the first day. The option is located at the end of your formula.

Why so many complications?
You enter the date 05/04/12 in A2; you set the custom format dd: 5 is displayed.
You enter in B2 the formula =A2; you set the custom format mmmm: April is displayed.
That's it, and there can't be any mistakes.
