Car purchase scam Côte d'Ivoire

Hello! Here's to add to the already long list.
I put my car up for sale on several websites.
24 hours later: a message from a potential buyer on my phone.
His name: Jubert first name: J-M phone: 0022504850883
Episode 1: he asks for more photos, some information..... Didn't seem very interested in the condition of the car (so no need for additional photos). Asked me what the "final" price was...... Then said he would talk to his wife...... and to call him back in 10 minutes.
Episode 2: I let things linger for 3 to 4 days....... he didn't contact me again.
Episode 3: I call today. Right off the bat he asks me: tell me about the car, its final price. As if it were a call center.
In the end he proposes the following procedure: send him a bank account details (because payment will be made by bank transfer), a sales agreement with the price, my landline and mobile number, a copy of my ID card, a copy of my registration certificate.
Then he tells me that I would have to pay about 900 to 940 euros in bank fees/exchange!!!!!!
But that this amount would be included in the transfer (oh what a nice guy, so considerate)........ And that I need to hurry: TODAY. The freight forwarder would come quickly to pick up the car (funny that!).
Episode 4: finding all this suspicious..... I browse the internet and find your site...... and I read everything!!!
VERIFICATION with my banker A FEW DAYS AGO: if payment by (real) transfer, then no surprises, my banker tells me: it made me feel "a little" reassured, but "not entirely though".
YES BUT: I read some of your comments on the site. I understood that one could transfer a "too large amount" and get the difference refunded..... and on top of that it's not really a transfer..... To fully understand go read everything.
SO A BIG SCAM ON THE HORIZON! It's clear that I'm dropping this.

      Hello,
I just registered on the site because I received an offer for a vehicle for sale from Jean-Michel GONTIER.
As this seemed suspicious to me, I typed his name on the Internet and ended up on this FORUM.
Could someone confirm if he is a scammer?

      Thank you very much.

Firstly, if you have found it as reported at least once, YES, it is a scam.

Then focus on comparing the scenario. Ivory Coast, Western Union or Money Gram, UEMOA or BCEAO fees, just keywords that prove it’s a scam!

    Hello.
It's a scam. Yesterday, I received the same message with the same phone number but a different email address "boilevindenis@hotmail.fr".
Having gone through the same process for selling a car at the end of 2008, I pushed the transactions to the max without taking any risks (I even called and spoke to someone with a strong African accent who insisted he was French, just like on the copy of his ID card that he sent me, which turned out to have been stolen), and with the evidence, I filed a complaint at the police station. The court clerk informed me that legal proceedings were ongoing and continued.

      Good evening,
I have also been contacted by a Mr. PIERART Valery Patrick who is very interested in my car. His email address is boilevindenis@hotmail.fr and his phone number is 0225 05 54 70 77. He is also called BOILEVIN Denis. That's what caught my attention and led me to this site.
Unfortunately, I have already sent him my bank details and a sales agreement; I hope he won't be able to do anything with these documents. I am waiting to see what he will do next. Can someone tell me if I need to take any steps to prevent any fraud with my bank details?
      Thank you.

        Good evening!
I advise you to call your banker and explain the situation!
He can't take money from you........ but you never know, if he passes your information to a friend in France, who impersonates you!!! See you tomorrow.
Tell your contact that it's too late and that your car was just sold this morning.
        Don't waste time.

I want to report scams related to car purchases from Ivory Coast by individuals impersonating
    identities such as Joseph Coulibaly 01 BP 281 Abidjan 01 Tel 00 225 01 85 74 48. All these purchase offers
are based on fabricated and deceitful stories that involve paying taxes on the promised amount
that would be transferred. Never give either a copy of your identity card or a copy of the registration document as they use
these documents to deceive others. Victims of these malicious offers can contact me.

      Hello ponsray,

These scams have been reported on this site (and others) for a long time, it's nothing new.
That doesn't stop unfortunately many people from falling for them.

However, I am perplexed about your offer intended for the victims of these scams.
      What does it consist of?

    This one is from today

    jl.clement362@gmail.com

I acknowledge receipt of your email and reiterate my interest in purchasing your vehicle. Thank you for the photos! The final amount suits me perfectly.

I am French and currently in Côte d'Ivoire for my work. I have therefore consulted my advisor to suggest a procedure that offers the maximum guarantee; he advises us to use a bank transfer; it is secure and safer for both of us. Regarding the transfer, it will only take 24 hours since my bank is represented in France (BNP PARIBAS) and also because I will make an "urgent" transfer for you. Then, once your bank has confirmed the transfer and you have received the money, we can proceed with more confidence with the process for the repatriation of the vehicle.

I would therefore like you to send me your identification and a handwritten promise of sale since you will receive the money before handing over the keys of the vehicle to my representative. For my part, I am already sending you a copy of my ID. I have already contacted a carrier for the pick-up of the vehicle; I will give you his number and when the financial aspect is definitively settled with you, you will just have to contact him; he will come with my representative who will handle the formalities for the vehicle; he will have a power of attorney from me and will be able to sign all the transfer documents. You will agree on an appointment based on your availability for the pick-up of the vehicle. You will not have any expenses as everything is on my account.

If you agree in principle, I would like you to send me the requested documents by email, confirming that you are selling me the vehicle at the same time as your bank details so that I can forward them to my bank for the transfer.

P.S.: I would like to pick up the vehicle at the end of next week; I will therefore make the transfer tomorrow if I have all the necessary documents.

    Best regards

    Jean-Louis

The problem is that at first we believe it. But now I will no longer respond to SMS to contact buyers.

    Good evening everyone,

this afternoon I received the now-classic text message, except that I very, very, very stupidly (if I have to say it) gave my bank details (and name and address, but I’m not worried about that). However, I started stressing after handing over my bank details, and the guy explained the situation (Ivory Coast, another currency, transaction fee...). There you go. After five minutes of anxiety calling myself a real idiot, I typed the name Boilevin Denis into Google. And there, I stumbled upon your great forum. At least I feel a little less alone, but still just as stupid!
I just sent an email to that jerk attaching your forum, simply telling him that he could go "screw himself cordially with sand." In the subject line, I wrote: A picture is worth a thousand words.

The lesson you all gave me tonight is that before falling into the trap, you should take a look online. And if there’s nothing, it’s still suspicious, so just forget it. We need real people in person, ideally from the area.

Wishing you all the best, and thanks for keeping the forum alive, it’s great.

I experienced the same thing; I also foolishly gave my IBAN to this guy.
Sensing the scam, but it was too late, I called him back to cancel everything. But I'm still scared.
My bank is closed today and tomorrow.
Can you reply to let me know what happened next?
      Thank you for your help.

Thank you for this information. I was also contacted by Mr. Jubert from Ivory Coast. Having read your message and several others, this matter seems suspicious. So I ended this transaction without delay. I also removed the ad I posted on the autoscoot24 site because apparently the problem comes from there. In any case, thank you for all this information.

Hello, what a surprise for me to see these discussions... I posted my car for sale online, and I received the same message from a person claiming to be interested and wanting more photos. Here is their message: "Hello, I am interested in your vehicle if it is still available, please send me recent photos of the bodywork, tires, seats, and if possible, the engine. Thank you in advance, Mr. Bontemps."
I was very happy, so I replied that I would send them photos, and then I received a second message: "Good evening
I thank you for your availability, we have read your technical sheet, and we do not hide it, the car is in impeccable condition.
While waiting for the requested photos, I would like to have more details about the general condition, mileage, last service, maintenance, etc.
Please send us, if possible, the invoices for the car as well. I would also like to know if the shock absorbers and tires are in perfect condition and if the maintenance is up to date.
    You can contact my husband at 00225 47 43 05 35.
Please also leave us your various telephone contacts (mobile and landline).
    Best regards,

So, is this a scam or not?? I'm starting to doubt.

Yes, it's a classic and very common scam. Similar to the lottery and inheritance scams where you have to pay fees to receive them. On my advice, register on eBay, Kijiji, or the PACS.

      Response to Ludo! Hey!
      Yes, it's a scam!
Let me recap the principle in broad strokes.
Episode 1: The fake buyer lures you in by asking for more photos... then tells you that he's making a transfer to your bank... but adds that "since there are fees, he'll transfer you the price you're asking for + 400 euros, for example, but after the transaction, you'll have to transfer him back the 400 euros he overpaid you."
Episode 2: The money indeed arrives at your bank, which sends you a statement showing the amount you requested + the 400 euros. So you're very happy!
Episode 3: A friend/forwarder comes to pick up your car a few days later. You've already sent back the 400 euros that were overpaid in the other direction.
Episode 4: 15 days later, your bank notifies you that the money never arrived! It wasn't a "transfer," but a check, and that check was fake. Yep, that's the problem: the bank credits the check, AND CHECKS LATER!!!!!! Because in fact, the guy tells you he's making a transfer..... THIS IS FALSE, it's a check. Note: in the case of a transfer, the money really arrives.
Epilogue: Your car is gone..... you sent 400 euros...... Put simply: you got scammed!
CONCLUSION: you let it go.... you do nothing.... especially no photocopy of your ID card, nor the registration certificate, you do not share your banking details. YOU DO NOTHING.
At most, you send an email that says: "We know the scam, go screw yourself....."
As for filing a complaint: forget it. How do you expect the French police to act in Ivory Coast?
Last piece of advice: if a buyer is really interested, he will be residing in France, and will be ready to come see you! So be patient. See you later.

      Hello Mr
I am Mr Boilevin Denis, the interested party for the purchase of your property described in the ad. Indeed, I am very interested in this property, which is why I am writing to quickly confirm this and inform you that I wish to purchase it from you. Regarding the payment, I was able to contact my manager who suggested two reliable and secure payment methods: the first is a bank check which you will receive within 48 hours by express mail to your home address after I have issued the check with my bank, and the second payment is a cash transfer via Western Union that takes only 10 to 20 minutes, and you will receive it by postal service at your home in cash, as I am ready to send you the money to reserve the property and I will send it to you as soon as possible upon your approval by indicating which payment method suits you best. However, I would also like to mention that I am a European expatriate of French nationality, I work nights, which explains my urgency to reach you directly. If you completely agree with me, please let me have your details following to make the necessary arrangements: - Name and surname - Full address - Phone and landline number - Final price of the property. Please do not hesitate to leave me a message by email, I will call you back as soon as possible...
Thank you for paying attention to my interest, See you soon,

I just received a text asking me to call the number 0022504850883 or to email Mr. Denis Boilvenin at hotmail.com!! This is not the first time I've received such a text. My motto: as soon as it comes to a contact via text that is so directive, then...

I almost got scammed by Mr. Boilevin Denis too. He sent me a message on my phone asking for additional photos via email at boilevindenis@hotmail.fr or to contact him at the number 0022505547077. I called him, and he asked me for a bank account details, a sales promise, my landline and mobile numbers, and he told me that I needed to advance 977 euros in taxes because his currency was not the same as mine. I told him that I didn’t have that amount, and he said I would see with his banker the following morning. Indeed, someone called me the next morning posing as a banker. The person asked if I could make the transaction, and I told him that I first needed to go to the bank. The bank told me they had never heard of this, and advised me to check with the tax office, which I did. The tax office also told me they had never heard of this and that it must be a scam. This so-called banker was supposed to call me back after my appointment at the bank, but I didn’t hear anything.

I have to send my bank details and then...

I admit that as soon as I read their message, I thought whoa this is not normal and I was right
so WATCH OUT FOR YOU SCAM DON'T LET YOURSELF BE TAKEN.
The messages I read date back to 2008-2009 but in this year 2010 it still exists.

    Hello everyone,
My husband listed our car for sale on various websites and on February 14, we received a text from Mr. Bernard Georget saying that his wife had found the sale ad and that he was very interested.
We called the number he provided: 0022 566 252 361 and reached the voicemail, so we sent him an email: bernard.georget@yahoo.fr.
In the meantime, I did some small research and came across a site called "car purchase scam Ivory Coast."
Imagine my surprise and my suspicions, which were quickly confirmed by his email response:

    Good evening M
Thank you for your email. Indeed, it was my wife who gave me your number so that I could get in touch with you because I am the one who is supposed to buy the vehicle for her, but I would like to know more information, that is to say the mileage, the date of first registration, some photos of the inside and outside, and your firm price. Moreover, I would like to emphasize that I am abroad for professional reasons; I couldn't reach you on the phone, which is why I sent you a text and I can assure you that as soon as we agree on the price, I will consult with my manager to see how he can issue you a certified bank check and when you have cashed your money, I will deal with a shipping company for the pickup and to finalize all the paperwork with you. If this suits you, please keep me informed. Also, I would like to know if the vehicle is pledged or not?

    Awaiting your response

Unfortunately, many people still get scammed, for my part, no transaction will be made with this person.

      Hello everyone,
I received exactly the same SMS and the same email response!!

Good initiative, I just received the same email from the same person!

I'm sending an email to see *

That being said, I've had an offer for another property, I was offered a check from a subsidiary of a large French group, it's completely legal except that the cashing delay is 6 months, which means that you cash the check 6 months later and it could be debited for non-payment!

Be careful of fake bank checks that circulate for payments on the weekend!!

    Good luck!
