Hello,
So I wanted to know (as the title indicates) what layers are for? And what are they? What do they allow you to do? I have the GIMP software, and if someone knows what they are for and would like to answer my question, I would be grateful!
Thank you, I look forward to your response

Hello.
Layers are, in graphics design, a set of stacked layers, each containing a part of the elements that make up the whole, which is obtained by the superposition of all the layers. In this system, each element can be placed on a different layer, allowing for the work to be broken down, making it simpler.
Layer systems are present in many software applications, both for editing raster or vector images, for desktop publishing, etc.
It is possible to hide or lock certain layers, to move an element from one layer to another, to modify the stacking order of layers, to group certain layers together to make them linked, etc.
Each layer is usually associated with a number of parameters, such as transparency.

This allows you to create a layer; in real life, a layer is by default transparent, so you can overlay several of them to create fades between multiple layers, merge several layers to create a montage (like a layer with you and a photo of a landscape; if you merge the two, you will then be in the landscape...).
There are plenty of tutorials online to help you learn how to use them best ^^
