so...
I’m not sure about everything (some words are sung too fast), but it’s about this

We used to say that we were brother and sister
We used to think so..
Nothing was more bitter

Today I break my promise
to rise above vanity (the void?)
Today let’s make our promises
for tomorrow

We used to play all the games where no one wins
We used to laugh and lie..
(some live in better = some live better ??)

Today I break my promise
to rise above vanity
Today let’s make our promises
for tomorrow

We used to swear that we were brother and sister
We always knew
that you would take me out of there

Today I break my promise
to rise above vanity
today let’s make our promise
for tomorrow

Hello, you translated the song into French, but I can’t find the lyrics in English. Do you have them? Where can I find them?
Thank you in advance.

Nous disions
Que nous étions
Frère et sœur
Nous croyions...
Rien n'était jamais amer

Aujourd'hui, je brise mes promesses
De rester hors du vide
Aujourd'hui faisons nos promesses
Pour demain

Nous jouions
À tous les jeux
Où personne n'est le gagnant
Nous mentions
Et fabriquions des mensonges
Certains vivent mieux

Aujourd'hui je brise mes promesses
Pour rester hors du vide
Aujourd'hui faisons nos promesses
Pour demain

La lalalalala La lalalala la(....)

Nous jurions
Que nous étions
Frère et sœur
Nous partons toujours
Mais toi, tu m'emmènes là-bas

Aujourd'hui, je brise mes promesses
Pour rester, hors du vide
Aujourd'hui faisons nos promesses
Pour demain

La lalalalala La lalalala la(....)

Peut-être que c'est "some live IT better", ça serait plus logique car ça donnerait en français "certains le vivent mieux".

We used to say that we were brother and sister. We used to think. Nothing was too bitter. Today, I'm breaking my promises, staying in the void. Today let's make our promises for tomorrow. We used to play all the games where no one wins. We used to lie and make lies. Some live better. Today I'm breaking my promises to stay in the void. Today let's make our promises for tomorrow. La, la, la... We used to swear that we were brother and sister. We always leave, but you, we will go somewhere other than here. Today, I'm breaking my promises to stay in the void. Today let's make our promises for tomorrow.

I don't know if it's good but it's what I found on the site; it's best before making new posts to search a bit because there are plenty of posts on LOL.

Hello,

I think that "We used to say" would be translated as "once upon a time" rather than "we used to".

There you go ^^

Otherwise, very nice movie :)

And I don't think that's it, today, I'm out but today I broke my promises!
You shouldn't do word for word because sometimes it doesn't mean anything! Between French and English, the words change and word-for-word translation doesn't always work =/
And today let's make our promises for tomorrow, it sounds a bit strange, doesn’t it?!
Reread and you'll see that some passages don't sound French at all!
I'm going to be a buzzkill, but word-for-word doesn't work at all!

In short, the song explains the story of the film about two people who were best friends and reveal their love for each other [Aww, how sweet]

There you go. Good translation for the brave ones <3

```html Bonjour, je viens ajouter ma pierre à l'édifice et tenant compte des diverses remarques linguistiques (notamment celle de "didtit") et en faisant confiance à mon oreille plus qu'aux paroles de Lyrics4U qui me semblent un rien bizarre pour certains passages.
C'est une traduction plus littéraire que littérale, j'ai donc mis quelques explications (1 fois en fait ^^).
We used to say Autrefois nous disions That we were Que nous étions Brother and sister Frère et sœur We used to think Autrefois nous pensions Nothing was ever bitter Que rien n’était plus amer. Today I break Aujourd’hui je romps My promises Mes promesses To stay out of the emptiness. Pour ne pas me sentir vide. (rester hors d'un sentiment de vide) Today let’s make Aujourd’hui faisons Our promises Nos promesses For tomorrow. Au lendemain We used to play Autrefois nous jouions All the games Tous les jeux Where no one’s the winner Auxquels personne ne gagne. We used to laugh Autrefois nous riions And make lies... some even better Et mentions… parfois (c’est) encore meilleur Today I break Aujourd’hui je romps My promises Mes promesses To stay out of the emptiness. Pour ne pas me sentir vide. Today let’s make Aujourd’hui faisons Our promises Nos promesses For tomorrow. Au lendemain Lalalalalalalalala Lalalalalalalalala We used to swear Autrefois nous jurions That we were Que nous étions Brother and sister Frère et soeur We always knew Nous avons toujours su That you would take me out there. Que tu m'en éjecterais Today I break Aujourd’hui je romps My promises Mes promesses To stay out of the emptiness. Pour ne pas me sentir vide. Today let’s make Aujourd’hui faisons Our promises Nos promesses For tomorrow. Au lendemain.
Your ear is indeed better than all the lyrics sites I've seen. But there is a mistake: it's neither "some live in better," nor "some live it better" or "some even better," but "SOUND EVEN BETTER," which means "it's even better." I’m not going to give a translation lesson on SOUND. It would take too long, but SOUND, like TASTE, FEEL, etc., is difficult to translate when followed by an adjective. We would get closer to the exact meaning by saying "by hearing it (sound) it's…", "by tasting it (TASTE) it's…", "by touching it (FEEL) it's…", but that's not very French.
to stay out of the emptiness: in order to stay out of loneliness (void)
The TO here can be understood in two different ways: either in order to (the purpose) or simply as a preposition accompanying TO MAKE A PROMISE TO DO SOMETHING, which would then indicate what promise it is about. I believe the interpretation is free.
That you would take me out there: That you would take me there.
I hope to have satisfied your thirst for knowledge about the meaning of this song which, for rhythmic reasons, may not contain all the words the author would have wanted to include.
Just a little information, I am a language student and we recently covered this:
To be used to + verb in -ing = to be accustomed to
To used to + verb = used to...
So here in the song it is: "used to be brother and sister"
Best regards!
Margaux
"used to" indicates a former, past, bygone habit, so it indeed means "formerly" but also "to be used to."
Therefore, "we used to say..." means "formerly, we used to say..." or to simplify "we were used to saying," "formerly" not being essential as the imperfect indicates that it is no longer the same now.
Personally, I loved it LOL
Little sister
We used to say
That we were brother and sister.
We used to think
That nothing could ever be bitter.
Today, I break my promises to stay away.
Today, let’s make our promises for tomorrow.
We used to play all the games
That no one can win.
We used to laugh and lie,
Never worrying.
Today, I break my promises to stay away.
Today, let’s make our promises for tomorrow.
La, la, la, etc.
We used to swear to be brother and sister.
But we always knew that you would change your mind (?).
Today, I break my promises to stay away.
Today, let’s make our promises for tomorrow.
"We used to" translates to an imperfect tense of habit, no need for "to be used to".
There you go ^^
One must keep the meaning of the song in mind, and I think that if it’s in the film, it’s for a reason:
Mael sings this song at the moment when he decides, in a way, to move from being Lola's best friend (“That we were, brother & sister” is significant of the feelings he has shared with Lola until then), he then breaks the unspoken commitments between him and her (“Today, I break my promises”) - namely that each of them lives their love life separately and that they remain just friends - to reveal his love to Lola, which she shares. The rest is an anticipation of what will happen between him and Lola (and what happens in the film).
Moreover, it shows that it's also because of Lola that he falls in love, that it's partly “her fault” with the “You would take me out there.”
The rest of the song describes quite well the atmosphere of the film, this carefree youth (“Play the games”; “laugh and make lies”).
This is my interpretation, and I don't claim to know what the director was thinking when choosing this song.
See you soon.
Hello!
I think Champmotteux was right, since he then says something like "We used to played". So I think "used to" would mean to have a habit. At the beginning, the translation would be "We used to say ...". Then it would be "We had the habit of ... playing ...". But I'm not sure about the verb.
That's it! =D
I hope this can help someone :)
I'm also looking for an exact translation because even though it's quite a good English accent, which is pretty understandable ... I'm not very sure of myself ... x)
PS: Such an amazing movie! Awesome! =D I want to watch it dozens of times! :)
I have difficulty understanding why "stat out of the emptiness" is translated as "rester à l'écart" when "emptiness" means "a feeling of emptiness, despair" ...
And why does everyone translate "to use to" as the translation of "to be used to" ...
Some suggest good corrections, why not take them into account?
I agree with PANTALON, some people provide very good translations and others who translate the song into French do not take that into account. There really needs to be a good translation for people who are searching on the site. There you go. Hi (y)
I think that the words are this: if you want to discuss this film with me, no problem
Little sister:
Once we said
That we were
Brother and sister
We used to think...
That nothing was too bitter.
Today, I break my promises
To stay away
Today, let’s make our promises
For tomorrow.
We used to play
All the games
We used to laugh
So let's leave the best
Once upon a time we used to say
That we were
Like brother and sister
We thought...
That nothing was more bitter
Today, I break my promises
Not to fall into the void
But today, let's make our promises
For tomorrow
We played
All the games
Where there were no winners
We lied
And made lies.
Some live better.
Today, I break my promises
Not to fall into the void
But today, let's make our promises
For tomorrow
La lalalalala, La lalalala la (....)
We swore
That we were
Like brother and sister
We always left
But you, will take me away from here
Today, I break my promises
Not to fall into the void
But today, let's make our promises
For tomorrow
La lalalalala, La lalalala la(....)
Here, I think that's it.
Hello guys.
I’m going to give you my translation because it’s not: today I’m breaking, my promises. <-- for sure it’s wrong.
We used to say
That we were
Brother and sister
We used to think ...
Nothing,
All bitter
Today, I’m breaking my promises
To stay in the void
Today, we’re going to make our promises
For tomorrow
We used to play
All the games
Where no one is the winner
We used to laugh ...
And the lie,
Some live in the best
Today, I’m breaking my promises
To stay in the void
Today, we’re going to make our promises
For tomorrow
La lalalalala La la lalalalala (....)
We used to swear
That we were
Brother and sister
We always left ...
But you,
Take me there
Today, I’m breaking my promises
To stay in the void
Today, we’re going to make our promises
For tomorrow
La lalalalala La lalalala la (....)
