Windows Live Messenger; lost the contact list.
Hello,

Following an update of Windows Live Messenger, have you lost your contact list?

Go to https://outlook.live.com/owa/ and enter your username and password to log into your Hotmail inbox.
Click on CONTACTS at the top of the page, then on CONTACTS at the bottom left, then in the new window click on MANAGE and then choose EXPORT (.CVS). Save your contact file to your desktop, naming it exactly WLMContacts. Move on to step No. 6

OR

Open Windows Live Mail, if your Hotmail or live.mail or msn.com account is already active in this mailbox; go to step No. 5

To create an account in Windows Live Mail:

1/ Open Windows Live Mail

2/ Click on TOOLS in the top bar, then on ACCOUNTS, a small window opens and on the right choose ADD. Click on ADD.

3/ Add an Email Account: fill in the required fields (email address + password, for display name write your name). Click on NEXT.

4/ Once the account is set up, you need to close Windows Live Mail and open it again. You should have an automatic retrieval of your messages and contacts from your Hotmail inbox. It will take some time if you have many messages and contacts.
5/ Go to the bottom left and click on the CONTACTS icon.
The contacts panel opens --> click on FILE at the top left of this window (contacts) --> Choose EXPORT -->Comma separated values (.CVS) --> Save the exported file under; name it exactly WLMContacts --> click on browse to open the location where you want to save the file, the desktop for example and give Windows Live Messenger time to copy the list. Once completed, close Windows Live Mail.
6/ Once the file is created, go to this address:
http://www.rhys.cx/cttconvert/csv2ctt.php (csv to .ctt conversion: note that it is also possible to convert in the other direction)
Click on browse and find the previously created .CVS file.
Click on SUBMIT and save your new file to your desktop. It is now in .CCT format, which is accepted by Messenger. Note that it is also possible to convert in the other direction.

OPEN Windows Live MESSENGER and click on CONTACTS at the top left of the toolbar --> Import Messenger contacts --> find your WLMContacts file where you just saved it. Close Windows Live Messenger and restart it.

Response from Windows Live Messenger Support:

If your contact list is empty or incomplete after you installed the latest version of Windows Live Messenger, it may not have been updated correctly in the cache. You need to set your folder options correctly in order to view and delete the contact cache folder.

1/To check your folder options:

-On the taskbar, right-click Start, then select "Explorer."
-Click "Organize" at the top left, then "Folder and search options."
-Select the "View" tab.
-In the Advanced settings list, select "Show hidden files and folders," make sure the box "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked, then click OK.
-Click "Organize."
-In the Layout menu, ensure that the Navigation pane option is selected.

2/Delete the contact cache contents

-On the taskbar, right-click Start, then select "Explorer."
-Open the folder C:\Users\Your Windows username\Contacts\Your Messenger email address.
-Delete all files from the folder.
-Open the folder C:\Users\Your Windows username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\Your Messenger email address.
-Delete all hidden or non-hidden folders from Your Messenger email address folder.
-Close Windows Explorer and try logging in to Messenger again.
