A friend comes over, he restarts it several times, it finally restarts and bam! Miracle, it boots into Windows...
One piece of advice... if you manage to get into Windows, uninstall that junk SP2!

I'm sorry, but SP2 has nothing to do with it; it's a hard disk issue that caused a problem with the pci.sys file.
It should be noted that the disk generates micro-errors quite regularly, but most of the time, they're invisible because
either it's in a free space
or in a less important file that Windows repairs.

The best solution is to start the recovery console and replace the file with a valid one (search to see if it's there on drive C).

I have the same problem with the file system32\drivers\pci.sys.

I have Windows XP Home Edition. When I turn on the PC, a screen appears saying that Windows did not start normally. Then there are different options: start Windows normally, safe mode, last known good configuration... First of all, a "chkdsk C:\F" is necessary...the F being the repair parameter in case of disk error. Windows offers to do it at the next restart, say "y" but do not restart immediately.
In the start menu go to "run" type
