pci.sys Solved

Question

Hello,
I read quite a few messages about the missing or damaged system32\drivers\pci.sys problem.
My issue is that the PC starts and immediately goes to the startup options page (safe mode, start Windows normally, etc.).
However, when I try to start in safe mode or normally, nothing happens, just a black screen, and as soon as I press a key on the keyboard, the PC restarts.

If I try to start with the last known good configuration, it shows me the error that system32\drivers\pci.sys is damaged or missing.

I have tried many solutions given on the forum and here are the results: I found a faulty RAM stick, and when I boot from the installation CD and try to repair, I enter the command:
cd systm32\driversren pci.sys pci.old
It tells me the command is invalid.
And if I use the other command:
expand d:\i386\pci.sy_
It extracts the file, but it still doesn’t work.

I found this. I hope it helps you.

The pci.sys file is missing or corrupted.
To resolve this issue, you need to extract the original file from the Windows CD-ROM. Here’s how to do it:

• Start in Recovery Console • To learn more about Recovery Console, see this section
• At the C:\Windows> prompt, and while respecting the spaces, type the following commands:
• C:\Windows>cd system32\drivers and press Enter
• C:\Windows\system32\drivers>ren pci.sys pci.old and press Enter
• C:\Windows\system32\drivers>expand d:\i386\pcy.sy_ and press Enter
(don’t forget the sign that appears right after the y in .sy)

• C:\Windows\system32\drivers>exit and press Enter to restart the computer.

Start the console from the startup disks or the CD-ROM

• Place the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive.
• Start your computer.
• When the computer starts from the diskette or CD-ROM, the system checks the hardware, and then prompts you to choose one of the following options:

• To install Windows XP now, press ENTER.
• To repair a Windows XP installation, press R.
• To exit the setup program without installing Windows XP, press F3.
ENTER = Continue R = Repair F3 = Exit

• Press the [R] key
• When the next screen appears, answer the various questions that you are asked.

Enter the Administrator password: or escape if no password.

• To the question "Which Windows installation do you want to log on to?" type the number 1 and press Enter.
• If you have a multi-boot computer, type the corresponding number for the Windows XP installation you want to log on to when prompted, and then press Enter.

• When the C:\Windows> prompt appears, type the appropriate commands to resolve your problem.

Well, it worked! The only thing is that I had to install the hard drive in my other computer and rename pci.sys, then put the hard drive back in the computer, and then extract the file from the Windows CD.
