Hello everyone, for some time now I have been receiving selection letters from Reader's Digest announcing that I am the likely winner of a check for €550,000.
I responded to the first letters and I also sent payments. Today, I am very skeptical about my real chances of winning this amount, especially since I read on this forum that quite a few people have received the same letters. I have recently also received books, a small pair of binoculars, etc...
My question is: what should I do?
- Should I send them back?
- Should I keep them knowing that I have nothing to fear?
- Or should I pay them to avoid dealing with their collections services?

I also received letters saying I was the winner of a contest, and I'm getting invoices for books I didn't order, so I haven't paid for almost 6 months. If they want me to pay, they can find out on which planet I placed the order because I've never ordered or requested anything from them. But in any case, it smells like a pure scam.

Me, it's the same, I received a book, I returned everything, and I wrote a registered letter to the CEO of the company. I just received a response today from this gentleman, saying that they would send me no more items that I never ordered, and no more advertisements. I am pleased because this company is just a bunch of con artists, taking money from the most gullible and the poor. I am rid of them from now on. Now, if I receive an envelope saying you've won millions, it will go straight to the trash.

I'm also starting to think it's a scam. I'm always a finalist and I'm a potential winner of $665,000.00, but there's always a catch, and I never know if I'm going to win something or if it's like for all of you.
It's certain that I've bought in, but if I don't receive any cash prize, I'm going to return everything I've received and cancel my subscription.
I'm looking more and more at the papers I receive and wondering why nothing happens. "Act fast," they say, "don't miss your chance," etc.... What chance? The chance of always waiting for a response that never comes.
Again today....
I really think that next time I'll return everything and cancel my subscription.

Normally, one does not retract from an unfulfilled order..

Look instead at L121-12 of the Consumer Code:

It is prohibited to demand immediate or deferred payment for goods or services provided by a professional or, in the case of goods, to demand their return or retention without those having been the subject of a prior order from the consumer.

In this case, the 'target' (You) has no obligation to return (or to retain). The sender has to deal with picking it up within the timeframe you impose. Given the stakes, we doubt he will do it..

I searched the internet to find out WHY I keep receiving letters endlessly for an amicable collection even though I never ordered a book!! And this has been going on for over a year. WHAT TO DO!!

The Reader's Digest selections are a scam. I've received several letters telling me I was the lucky winner of a check for..., the last one dated December 28, 2009, for an amount of €150,000. I responded each time without any illusions, sending back the letters without ever ordering anything. Not only have I never won anything, but once they sent me a big book of road maps, along with two magazines from the 1960s, as if I had ordered them and taken a subscription, with a bill to pay. What audacity! I returned everything, expressing my surprise and refusal. It’s pure scam; it’s a trap to lure in new pigeons. They are completely out of touch. The best thing to do is to systematically throw their mail in the trash; at least then, you don't waste time and you’re guaranteed to gain the value of a postage stamp without any disappointed hopes. That's what I do now when I receive this nonsense. Don’t dream; their winners of €30,000 - €150,000 - €500,000 are a joke. They really think we’re fools. Have you ever seen a check for €150,000 just drop down for your pretty eyes? I’m 68 years old and I’ve never seen such a miracle, so stop dreaming - the trash can is our best ally. - nona

It's true, you're right Nona, they really do take us for fools! We should file a complaint for that, it's not dreams they provide us with but illusions, and it's unfair and unacceptable! Moreover, there are some who don't even have a subscription like me who receive the letter. Supposedly, I'm their loyal customer when I don't even know this company! I mean, what kind of world do we live in??

All these games of chance, whether it's France subscription, Selection, Reader's Digest, or others, it's a scam with forced sales. Throw all your envelopes from these companies in the trash without opening them. At best, send them back at their expense. It's like casinos, the lottery, scratch games; all these games are rigged. They have winners from time to time to attract the gullible, and precisely these so-called winners make me wonder if they are not members of these companies who win and return the money to the company. It's just a step to take. Money is earned through work; it's simple to understand.

The Reader's Digest selection never says that you have won, but that you could win. They do not send you books if you have not requested to receive them. When they send you a book that is free, they clearly explain that if you do not want to receive any more books, you just need to let them know.
I have never won anything in their contests, but I have also never been forced to take something against my will. I participate by returning the requested papers, but I only buy what interests me.
You need to learn to read what is written. My mother was a customer of the selection, and I am too. I have never had any problems.
