Converting kilowatts to amperes Solved/Closed

Question

Hello,

I am completely ignorant when it comes to electricity and my problem is the following:
how many amperes is 4 kW?
Why this question? When I plug in a storage heater (4 kW) + a boiler (200 liters) + a dishwasher, the circuit breaker trips.
This circuit breaker is rated for 50 amperes. How many amperes do I need for everything to work properly?

50 Amperes * 220 volts = 11000 Watts or 11 kW
Your installation can therefore support 11 kW
A 4 kW heater draws 18 Amperes
P = U * I
P = power in Watts
U = Voltage (220 Volts)
I = Current in Amperes.

Hi Manu!

The easiest thing is for you to send us a photo of the technical data..
The calculation of the miloubre is only correct if your devices actually operate at 220V for 4kW
It may also be that, like many storage heaters, they operate at 380V.
Maybe it’s not possible for you to run all 3 devices simultaneously.
The water boiler should only heat during the night.

The sum of the power consumed (3 devices) as long as they all operate at 220V, will give you (according to the calculation above) your amperage.

50 Amps is the maximum you can draw from your electrical installation for your entire home.
It should be noted that after your meter, you have an electrical panel that distributes your 50 Amps throughout the dwelling. In this panel, you have circuit breakers that protect your electrical lines going to the different rooms. The circuit breakers (the fuses) generally range from 10A to 20A (A=amps). 20 being the maximum allowed by law, which amounts to 4400 Watts (or 4.4 kW). This means you cannot plug anything else on the same line as your storage heating.

The formula is:

P = U x I
Power = Voltage x Current
Watt = Volt x Ampere
220 V x 50 A = 11,000 Watts

For a 20A circuit breaker:
220 V x 20 A = 4400 Watts

For a 16A circuit breaker:
220 V x 16 A = 3520 Watts

Be careful: Your circuit breaker is like the engine of your car; if you draw too much from it, it will trip.
Always allow a safety margin of 500W to 1000W. In cases where the device consumes the maximum, it's not an issue since it won't consume that power continuously. So, no worries. However, a device equipped with a motor, like a vacuum cleaner, will consume full power continuously since its motor runs constantly.

So, you just have to distribute the power of your appliances across different circuit breakers.
Be aware that it often happens that several lines come from the same circuit breaker and serve different rooms in the house. For example: the kitchen, the dining room, and the living room. This means that all the outlets in these rooms are protected by the same circuit breaker, meaning a maximum of 4400 Watts.
Therefore, in your case, if you plug in your electric heater at 4400W + your boiler at 3500W + your dishwasher at 3300W, in total you get 11200W. (The appliance values are approximate; if you want the exact values, they are listed somewhere on your devices, often on the back, sometimes underneath). Basically, you are drawing way too much energy at the same time.

Hello,
To find the amperage, you need to know the voltage you are using, either 220V or 380V.
The power P = UI, so I = P/U
For example: if you have a power P = 7000W, then
either I = 7000/220 = 31.8A or 7000/380 = 18.4A.

In France, we no longer calculate with 220V; the voltage is defined as 230V between phase and neutral and 400V between phases.
So P==230xI
2/
At 380V (400V),
we are necessarily using a three-phase device, so the consumed current is distributed over the 3 phases; the formula is therefore voltage between 2 phases x √3
which gives P==1.73x400xI
and I'll spare you the cosφ ;-)
