A commercial audio CD has a capacity of 700 MB and offers a maximum listening time of 75 minutes, in AIFF format, which is uncompressed.

Then it depends on the compression method:

- lossless compression like Apple loudness: which rewrites the file differently (using series of zeros or ones as factors, "6x0" taking up less space in bytes than "000000"). The software that plays this file decompresses it with the same algorithm and therefore reproduces the original sound without altering it.

- lossy compression, the most notorious being mp3, which divides the memory usage rate by a factor of 10 or 11 while brutally stripping away anything it can find of smooth and bucolic harmonics.

I experienced this: I had fun compressing a string quartet into mp3 (Beethoven's 14th, but it doesn't matter), and I suddenly wondered why the cellist took advantage of my turned back to mess around on my computer and suddenly switch to the bagpipes :-(
