Question

Hello,  I bought a Verbatim mediastation pro and I am very disappointed:  Issue 1: High-resolution photos cannot be viewed (Insufficient memory, incompatible format)  Issue 2: Video playback doesn’t work; I have audio glitches and no images.  Issue 3: Can't access the disk via FTP. Files are visible but cannot be read or written.  In the specifications and forums, they talk about NDAS: No code on my HDD and no option to activate in the menu that mentions NDAS.  I wanted to update the firmware, but I can’t find anything to do it; can you help me?  Thank you all

Hello, I just bought the 640GB and I can't get the image on my TV!!! I tried the 3 types of video output (S-Video or YUV) but despite pressing the video button on the remote continuously, nothing happens :-( If I connect it via USB to my PC, it detects the drive.

Hello,  I want to respond to Valephil regarding FTP access: Personally, I managed to connect to the hard drive via FTP by connecting the Mediastation Pro (which I will call MSP) to my Freebox via Ethernet. Details of the steps taken: - First, I connected the MSP via USB to my PC. I then created some directories and placed a few files there. - Then I unplugged the USB and plugged it into Ethernet on my Freebox (the MSP switched to DHCP and connected to the network). To find its IP address on the network, you need to go to the "Network" icon in the setup (the icon next to WIFI, still in the setup). - I then entered the MSP setup and went to the FTP icon. There, I enabled FTP. Normally, by default, the FTP username is "altechuser" and the password is "altech," with the port as "21." - Next, back on the PC: I created a new FTP access in Filezilla with the previously retrieved information, and I was able to access the MSP's hard drive, but in a directory I hadn't seen via USB ... Surprising. So I made a couple of changes that ultimately didn’t change anything at all. So I started copying a divx to the MSP in that famous directory, hoping to find it by chance through the MSP interface ... The file copied successfully, and then, by miracle, the directories I had previously created via my USB connection appeared!!! :)  I admit I didn't understand how that happened, but I'm glad to be where I am!  Regarding playing movies and photos, can you provide me with more information (size, video format, codecs ...), as I tried 2 videos without any issues, but I would like to do more tests. Good evening, after many attempts to get the MediaStation Pro to work as NDAS, it turns out that it's not possible. I contacted Verbatim support who confirmed to me that the MediaStation Pro (Ethernet and WIFI) does not have this feature. However, the Mediastation (Ethernet only) does have it. I also thought that if it can do the more, it can do the less, but no... This can be verified on the Verbatim website: - Verbatim MediaStation: https://www.verbatim.fr/404.php (the NDAS function is mentioned) - Verbatim MediaStation Pro: https://www.verbatim.fr/404.php (no mention of NDAS)  I purchased this product from RueDuCommerce which mentions a NAS function in the product sheet: http://www.rueducommerce.fr/Composants/Disques-Durs-externes/Disque-Dur-Multimedia/VERBATIM/435195-Disque-Dur-Multimedia-3-5-500Go-NAS-FullHD-1080p-HDMI-Ethernet-10-100bt-USB-2-0.htm  I asked for a return, they will check that I'm not talking nonsense when I explain to them that the product sheet is incorrect (since if it doesn't do NDAS, it's not a NAS), which should spare me the return shipping costs ;)  This will teach me to trust product sheets and to check directly with the manufacturer/reseller.  Otherwise, removing the NDAS part, from what I've tested: - WIFI setup is fine without too many problems (tested fixed and DHCP). The wifi function allows reading content from other computers from the disk but not reading the content of the disk from a PC (NDAS). - I successfully connected via FTP with the default altech credentials: ok, I didn't test writing - I tested the SAMBA function which allows access to a share on a PC and reading multimedia content, tests passed for photos. - Playback of AVI videos and JPG images on TV works without any issues - i-Radio is fine (streaming radios), but there's no option to choose the streaming site. - The disk acts as a USB host (not tested). This allows connecting another USB disk or a card reader for cameras to visualize content on the TV.   Additionally, for those looking for more information, the product is an equivalent of the MediaGate MG350HD (or almost, the firmware of the verbatim is a MG350S). Hello,  indeed, after several hours of struggle in front of quite poor documentation regarding the configuration of the verbatim, everything works. Thanks to the contributors of this forum, I’ll try to summarize.  If it can help, I have a livebox in wifi and connected via ethernet to a netgear gateway that distributes ethernet to 2 PCs and 1 laptop (the gateway doesn’t matter for the hard drive case). 1 Box in router mode and 1 PC are sufficient.  The goal is first to connect the hard drive to the box via wifi. In the disk setup, I configured the WIFI (wireless icon) in DHCP mode with a WEP key (not very convenient at first to enter the WEP key). From memory, I must have put the LiveBox in association mode (button next to the power supply). I saved the configuration and restarted the HDD. It should work, you should have the wireless icon lit on the HDD menu. In the HDD settings, enable the FTP server without further details (last icon in the setup at the bottom). Go back to the main screen. With the "Info" button, I retrieved the IP address of the HDD given by the box. Press "info" several times, on the second screen, it indicates whether the FTP server is "ON".  On the PC, install FileZilla. In the site manager, create a new server with the IP address of the HDD and the default user password that I left as "altechuser ...". Be careful, here, for your server, go to the "Transfer Settings" tab and click on "limit the number of simultaneous transfers" by entering the value "1". Save and try to connect! For me, it works, reading/writing on this disk remotely via Wifi. The transfer is not very fast but it suits me !!  MKVs do not play! Normal, it was expected, this is not a bug.  However, I advise before any operation to connect the device via USB and format the HDD to NTFS in order to transfer AVI files of substantial size (4GB). Typically, AVIs from a Blu-ray.

Hello, as stated in my previous message, "Press "info" several times, on the second screen, it will tell you if the FTP server is "ON". So I clarify that yes, it is indeed "ON (Disable)" on the second INFO page for the FTP server.  In FileZilla, go to "File / Site Manager" and in the hostname field, enter the EXACT IP address 192.168.1.XX provided by the INFO of the Verbatim drive and nothing else. Server Type "FTP ...", Normal authentication type and enter the default username "altechuser" and its password. Unless this user has been changed in the FTP server settings of the drive.  Try that and let me know.  Eventually, we may sometimes encounter an issue with the IP address that can change if we keep unplugging/replugging the Verbatim drive since it is set to obtain automatically (DHCP enabled in the wireless). Personally, I disabled it to set the IP address manually.  I have thus set a FIXED IP: 192.168.1.33 and the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 The 33 is random, I took an address beyond the usual 10/20 since it could be assigned to a PC. The 192.168.1 must not change, only the 33 can be changed to 40 ... Be careful, some addresses may conflict if they are already assigned BUT the advantage is that we don’t have to change the IP in FileZilla.  Good luck.

On the info of my hard drive, it indicates that the current firmware number is "MG350S 1.1.12-M" whereas the name of the file to download on the Altec site (by the way Korean and not Chinese) indicates "MG350S_1.1.11_ALTECH_EU_20080616_1738.upgrade"   ".12-M" against ".11_A" ... certainly renamed by Verbatim with the "M of "Mediastation ..." ? but based on which version of the initial ALTEC firmware? version 11?   Since my hard drive works perfectly, I won't take any risks ...   Good luck.

Hello,  First, thank you all for the information that allowed me to make progress in using the verbatim  mediastation pro. I encountered the same problems as most of you: - 530 server Busy - insufficient memory when viewing large photos via USB - no NDAS  For the "530 server Busy" problem, you just need to set in Filezilla or another FTP client to limit the number  of simultaneous connections to 1, problem solved.  Not afraid at all, I updated the MSP with the Altech firmware "MG350S_1.1.11_ALTECH_EU_20080616_1738.upgrade",  it works perfectly. Observations: - The only available language is English. - The "insufficient memory" problem for USB photos has disappeared, problem solved. - The NDAS function appeared in the "setup" menu - On the TV, the device is no longer called Mediastation but Mediagate  However, just activating NDAS is not enough as the XiMETA software requires a "NDAS IS" and a key. After installing ximeta, I launched ndasscan in a DOS window with the MAC address of my MSP as a parameter, and there, like magic, I retrieved the NDAS ID and key which I noted carefully.  Now, I have access in Windows via an additional drive and NDAS is operational on all my PCs, problem solved.  For transfer rates, I get 1MB/s via FTP and between 0.5 to 0.8MB/s depending on the PC used.  I still have one "detail" to resolve, I formatted the disk in NTFS and at startup, it sometimes indicates a disk recovery ???, this takes a few seconds and then everything works afterwards.  Yannick

Hello,  I have a Verbatim mediastation multimedia hard drive connected to my PC via Ethernet to the Livebox and then the Livebox to the PC via Wi-Fi. I am using the NDAS software from Ximeta (since it was provided...) I can see my Verbatim drive in My Computer and can navigate within it, as well as add files. But when I try to delete one of the files, I get a blue screen (ndasfat.sys)! I am using Vista if that helps...  Thank you in advance  Yann

Hello, I bought a MediaStation Pro hard drive the day before yesterday and I'm having quite a bit of trouble connecting to Wi-Fi. Indeed, I managed to synchronize with the Livebox (the first info page shows me the signal strength), but I can't ping it from my PC. I followed what was indicated in post 14, but nothing works. I tried to connect using WIRELESS, but it can't find the hard drive either. If someone could help me, that would be nice, it must surely be something to adjust in the Livebox or on my PC. (Suite de 105) I used this version for installation on Windows 7 RC, because apparently it's the first one that is explicitly compatible. Be careful, do not install an old version, it will likely crash the system (blue screen). It's then a hassle to uninstall it from a crashed system (reboot in safe mode which does not support the uninstallation procedure, rename the 3 drivers in windows/system32/drivers, at least one of which causes the crash, reboot in normal mode, rename the drivers back to their original names, then uninstall everything, phew! Avoid tinkering in safe mode, as it could mess up the subsequent uninstallation!)

Hello everyone,  I have the same problem, Mediastation HDD on Ethernet Livebox mini Sagem, Windows 7 with Ndas 3.712070 installed without issues, network drive detected, it should work but the connection is unstable, constantly dropping, then the Ndas recovers the connection, when it doesn't crash the explorer, with incredible slowness...  In short, it works very poorly, even after formatting to NTFS.  I’m out of ideas except maybe waiting for a more stable version of Ndas under 7, I don't know.  Are there any suggestions? Any news on this topic (disconnection/reconnection?) I'm still having the same issue, I'm now on W7, still the same. In the end, I can't use the internal disk of the MEDIASTATION. I have another non-multimedia network disk, a Western Digital, which is also connected to my BOX. I'm transferring my movies to my WD and using the MEDIASTATION to watch movies from the other disk. It's frustrating and I'm losing 650 GB that I'm not using :-(

I confirm it's a disaster and a piece of junk, the manual just like the device! And also the customer service! Incapable! I managed to get my media station pro to work wirelessly, I haven't tried it with ethernet, I feel like it would annoy me! The FTP with FileZilla works okay! But I also had a problem with an AVI video file and WMV that the media station pro wouldn't read! Furthermore, this device doesn’t recognize all USB keys! It's important to know that Verbatim is not the manufacturer, the license belongs to the Altech company!

I finally found the solution: you need to uninstall the Ndas software version from Ximeta: the latest versions are all problematic and don't work: the only one that works well and ensures a stable connection (i.e., without interruptions and multiple reconnections) is version 3.43.  It’s resolved for me and I hope to help you get out of your trouble as well.  Your turn to play :-)

So I can answer Dankan Dankan!, on the remote control there are up and down buttons, it's the arrow that goes up and another that goes down and it allows you to move forward or backward to have either numbers or letters and even uppercase! I think you understood the ap mode, you need to search for your own wifi, so you are connected.  highway

Response to Dankan: personally, after trying a wireless connection between the Mediastation and my computer, I gave up and created an ethernet connection. But let's look at your problem: 1. Your network: do you have a router or something like a Livebox? In this case, you will first need to give access permission for your Mediastation in your router or "box": this is commonly done with a "MAC address" identifier (visible on the label at the back of the Mediastation): once the permission is correctly set in the router or "box," there's no need to worry about a WEP or WAP key in the Mediastation. 2. Check the various settings on your router or Livebox: besides the option to give access to devices with the MAC address, it often also includes an option called "Plug & Play discovery": you will need to enable this option so that the Mediastation is not rejected by your router/box. 3. Check your firewall and/or antivirus software ... and make sure that the Mediastation is not blocked. 4. Communication between a PC and a Mediastation is done with software called NDAS software: having struggled myself for months trying to get the device to communicate, I can confirm that the only stable and operational version of NDAS is 3.43 (available for download on the Ximeta website). Other versions, especially the newer ones like 3.71, are incredibly unstable and problematic!!! 5. Regarding the firmware for the Mediastation: do NOT install the version available on the Verbatim website: it is suited for a very specific version (info obtained via email following my inquiry). Well, I managed to make some progress; my VERBATIM MEDIASTATION PRO is now able to access my PC via the wireless network.  Now I would just like to access VERBATIM MEDIASTATION PRO via my PC so I can send files directly over the wireless network.  My PC can't find the VERBATIM MEDIASTATION PRO; is there a manipulation to do?  I don't understand; if my VERBATIM MEDIASTATION PRO can access my PC, the reverse should be possible too, right? Hello, I advise you to connect your mediastation first via the USB cable and to reformat the mediastation disk, either in FAT32 or in NTFS (I opted for the latter). When I connect it to my PC via USB, it works fine, but over the wireless network, it doesn't show up on my PC.  I don't understand anything; soon I'm going to throw this thing in the trash. So it's not too bad if there's no image on the TV! By the way, speaking of that, I know someone who actually threw it in the trash.  Okay, let's get back to your problem. Unplug the HDMI cable, or the cable you connected to the TV, then plug it back in. I think the image will come back. After that, we'll see what's next!

Message for Dankan:  To assist you, please indicate: - which version of Windows? - access for a router or a box, like Livebox or Freebox? - have you configured, in the firewall of your "box" or the router, the MAC address of your Mediastation (required for the router or box to accept the connection), - if you have specified a security level for IP and/or MAC addresses in the Wifi access of your router or "box", you will need to configure the MAC address there, - have you left the router or box in DHCP (i.e., with automatic IP address assignment) or are you using a static IP address?  After your responses, I will be able to assist you further. Reformatting the disk does not affect the communication itself.

I have Windows Vista Pro, and I have a Linksys WRT54G router which I haven't configured. I just set up the mediastation for Wi-Fi access, entering my 128-bit encrypted WEP key.  That's all I've done; my Wi-Fi connection works great because I can access my PC wirelessly, and internet radios work very well too, so that part is good. The problem is that my PC does not recognize the mediastation in wireless mode, so I'm unable to send files to it.  But my biggest problem right now is that my HDMI connection from the mediastation to my TV is no longer working; the composite connections work, but the HDMI does not.  It used to work; I just formatted the mediastation to NTFS and connected it to my computer screen, which didn’t work either, and since then, there's been no HDMI connection. You have the TV now you can set up your video, in the video options on the media station that you can see on the TV, select HDMI! Turn off the media station and reconnect the HDMI, and it should work!  Received from verbatim!  Sir,  To set up the MediaStation hard drive on a wireless network, please follow the instructions below-  - in the Wireless menu of the television, select DHCP - on the remote control, to see the allocated IP address, press the Info button - press the Info button again to see the password and the username that you will use to configure FileZilla - press the OK button to exit the menu - in the Wireless menu again, select your wireless network (Wanadoo, I believe) then OK - select AP Mode - SSID should fill in automatically - then go to the Protocol menu and select Samba - in the FTP menu, make sure that FTP is enabled - in FileZilla, select to use only one connection at a time  To verify the communication between the wireless network and the MediaStation hard drive, on the PC, go to the Start/Run menu and type cmd then Enter. Type in this new window ping (a space) and the IP address of the external hard drive. If you get a response, this means that the network communication is established.  To transfer files via FileZilla, make sure you have created your shares according to the manual provided on the CD. The IP address of the hard drive can be dynamic (DHCP) or static, where the IP address is entered manually. If files need to be transferred regularly, it may be more beneficial to have a manual IP address that will not change.   Setting up the FTP server on the MediaStation   Turn on the MediaStation after connecting it to the television   Once it has finished booting, press the Setup button on the remote. Browse the menu left or right until you are on the FTP icon and press the OK button   Please note that the FTP server can only be configured if the FTP server option is set to OFF. If it is ON, please reconfigure it to OFF.   4 types of settings can be changed for the FTP server:   FTP Server Save To Path the default value is /hdd/DISK1   Server ID the default value is altechuser   Server Password the default value is altech   Server Port the default value is 21   If you are doing this for the first time, it is probably best to leave these settings as they are   When you have finished making the necessary changes, reconfigure the FTP Server to ON   Press the Setup button on the remote and save the settings   You are now ready to connect to the PC via the FileZilla software (this software is not provided with the drive)     Configuring FileZilla  After downloading FileZilla from the link https://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/files/  double-click on the downloaded file to install the program. Once installed, launch FileZilla. You will need to enter 3 things before you can connect to the FTP server:  Address – the IP address of your MediaStation, e.g. 192.168.2.1     User – (user) – this is the server identification from the previous section - Server ID   Password – (password) this is the server password as above   Port – if you left the value 21 above, there is no need to enter it since the default port is 21.   You should now be able to connect your MediaStation by clicking on the QuickConnect button in FileZilla. You should then see the list of local files on the left side of the screen and the MediaStation window on the right side.    To transfer files from the local computer to the MediaStation, select the file or folder in question in the part of the screen representing your local files and drag it to the part of the screen representing the MediaStation. You can also do the reverse.

Thank you very much for your responses, the problem is that I can only see the media station on my TV by connecting a composite cable (white, red, and yellow), so when I go to the options to configure the video connections, I cannot choose HDMI. Response to TJNVR: I had the same issues. Being under Windows 7 as well, the following steps helped me resolve this problem: 1. Connect the Mediastation directly via USB: I then proceeded to (re)format the hard drive, knowing that the Mediastation is delivered with the hard drive formatted in FAT32 and I formatted it in NTFS. 2. Afterwards, the Mediastation will be recognized as a new hard drive: now you will need to configure the sharing and, from what I understood (thanks to the specialists for confirming ...), you will need to enable the "Guest" account to allow a PnP device to connect to your computer running W7. 3. Then you will need to set up the sharing of this new hard drive: regarding access, you will need to grant access to the users defined in your system, AS WELL AS for the "Guest" account.  Then it should work, at least on my side. A small note: with the latest NDAS versions of Ximeta (3.6, 3.7, ..) it did not work: the only stable version that works well with W7 is version 3.43, which can be downloaded from the Ximeta website. When I connect my MSP via HDMI to my TV, I can't get a signal, so no image. I've tried different cables and also on a second TV, so the problem is with the HDD. Hello,  Can you tell me how you connect with FileZilla to the VMP?  Because I'm having trouble, what should I put in Host (FileZilla), and in the FTP configuration of the media station I have "FTP client access path /hdd/DISK1".  So is the path /hdd/DISK1? Or is it the IP of the hard drive? I tried both in FileZilla but nothing works.  The /hdd/DISK1 in the configuration cannot be changed? I don't understand anything! Welcome to the Verbatim mess! Received from them!  File transfer to the MediaStation hard drive over a network  Overview  Filezilla is a free software compatible with Windows, Linux, and Mac.   Network Setup  First, it is important to configure the network on the MediaStation. It can be connected via cable or wirelessly, although a wired connection offers better performance for transferring large files. The hard drive's IP address can be dynamic (DHCP) or static, where the IP address is entered manually. If files need to be transferred regularly, it may be more advantageous to have a manual IP address that does not change.   Configure the FTP server on the MediaStation   Turn on the MediaStation after connecting it to the television.   When it has finished booting up, press the Setup button on the remote control. Navigate the menu left or right until you reach the FTP icon and press the OK button.   Please note that the FTP server can only be configured if the FTP server option is set to OFF. If it is ON, please reconfigure it to OFF.   4 types of settings can be changed for the FTP server:   FTP Server Save To Path the default value is /hdd/DISK1   Server ID the default value is altechuser   Server Password the default value is altech   Server Port the default value is 21   If you are doing this for the first time, it is probably best to leave these settings as they are.   Once you have finished making the necessary changes, reconfigure the FTP Server to ON.   Press the Setup button on the remote control and save the settings.   You are now ready to connect to the PC using the FileZilla software (this software is not provided with the disk). Then click Connect, and you are in your media station. I find the speed a bit faster but nothing extraordinary; a DivX takes between 20 to 25 minutes to transfer. Instead of the little dots, it's the IP address of the media station! And I confirm that it works with FileZilla, but anyway, the verbatim is nonsense for technical support. We were made to believe they did us a favor by allowing us to use FileZilla and that it was impossible to transfer files at first, and it's because of customer complaints that they managed to set up the Samba server! Good evening,  I am reopening this thread, I am the owner of that pesky thing, the 500 GB Mediastation from Verbatim (non-professional version), which corresponds to model 35S from the manufacturer Altech.  I have done the NDAS 1.5.2 update, configured my Livebox so that the MSP has a fixed IP, registered its MAC address in the Livebox, and opened the necessary ports.  From the MSP, I can see the files on my laptop and on my desktop PC (connected via Powerline) which are in the shared folders, I can even stream them (with a few hiccups, but that's not too serious).  In Filezilla, I have entered the address 192.168.1.30 which corresponds to the MSP, with username: altechuser, password: altech, and port 21.  When I run the command prompt and type \ping 192.168.1.30 my PC and the MSP exchange packets correctly.  Despite all this, I cannot upload files from either the laptop or the desktop PC, nor can I simply access the MSP. And it annoys me to have to unplug the MSP to load files via USB and then plug everything back in repeatedly (since it's not in the same room).  I am asking you for advice, an opinion, or a solution, as I am totally stuck.  P.S.: On the Livebox, there is a USB port, I haven't explored this option yet, has anyone tested it? With Livebox, Freebox, Neufbox, well, any box really ;-)

Hello, I just acquired a mediastation HD DVR and I'm really glad to have found this forum. I already feel less alone. My problem is that I can't get any channels or very few; sometimes it scans 3 and sometimes just 1, and always only in analog, never in digital. I do have a TNT decoder that used to read all the channels. I also updated the firmware, but nothing works. Does anyone have any ideas? Because I'm already tired of struggling. Thanks

Hello, After following various advice, I reformatted my MSP to Mac Extended format so I could copy ISO files larger than 4 GB. After formatting, I created folders to organize my different files, and indeed the ISO files now transfer. When I connect the MSP to my TV, I can't access the created folders; they don't appear. Is there something I need to do after formatting: restore with the file present on the HDD or does it not recognize extended Mac partitions??? I have the same problem as you, my hard drive freezes after a few minutes, whether I'm watching movies or listening to music. At one point, I thought it was a specific issue with my drive, but I see the same problem with the new drive I received after exchanging it with Verbatim.
Here are some possible reasons I've found here and there on the internet, but nothing has worked for me. Try them and keep us posted!
- The type of encoding of the files you're playing is not well managed (especially regarding avi).
- Overheating of the drive, make sure not to enclose the drive too much.
- Power supply not delivering enough current.
- If the problem occurs when using the USB connection, change the cable for a better quality one.

These are not very rational answers in my opinion, but we really can't find much information about this drive, either online or from Verbatim!
