Question

I can't boot from an external USB drive.

In the Asus FAQ for this motherboard, I found only:

Q: Can I use a USB flash device to boot the A7V8X-X system?

A: Firstly, your USB flash disk should be able to be simulated as USB ZIP or USB HDD. Then, you can enter BIOS and set it as "Removable Device" to [USB ZIP/Flash] or [USB HDD] under the Boot menu. This will make it the first boot sequence, allowing you to use a bootable USB flash device to boot the system.

However, in the freshly flashed BIOS, I only have USB-ZIP and USB-FDD, but neither of these options allows my W2k to boot from an external enclosure.

Do you have any ideas?

You will need to enable USB legacy support in the BIOS; if not, it won't be possible.

I don't see it in the A7V8X manual on page 4.33: you only have choices for: floppy, ls-120, Zip, Magneto Optic, IDE, CDrom, SCSI and INT18 (network).

However, there are certain motherboards that allow it, but not yours. And sometimes you can even boot from USB drives prepared for that. But nobody uses this because if it's for a recovery boot, we prefer to boot from a rescue CD (http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-854494-%5Binfo%5D-repartionnement-qtparted#6 or http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-345270-Qui-connait-AVAST-anti-virus#16). Booting from the SATA interface often causes problems, so prepare a nice little boot disk on IDE, everything will go much better.

Hello gentlemen,

I have the solution to the boot problem from an external USB hard drive.

1/ First, you need the software: HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool version 2.1.8
Once you have downloaded the software, install it on your PC.

2/ You need the ISO image of your Win98 boot disk https://www.allbootdisks.com/download/iso.html
Extract the .iso image to a temporary folder on your PC. (Remember the temporary folder created during extraction!). UltraIso or IsoBuster allows you to extract an .iso image

3/ Connect the external USB hard drive and launch the HP software...

4/ Select the hard drive that you want to make bootable
Also select the FAT32 partition system
Choose Quick format to avoid being too slow
Select the DOS image for booting by going to the temporary folder created during the extraction of your .iso image
Click Start

Wait... and there you go, your external USB hard drive is bootable!!!
