Hello, I have a huge problem...
I have an Archos 605 Wi-Fi and... it was working an hour ago, and now when I turn it on it says
Recovery (code 104)
Would you like to recover your system? with 3 choices...
-No
-Repair Disk
-Format Disk
I'm completely lost... I don't understand anything, and if I tell my parents, I'm going to get "killed." I've tried everything...
Please help me!!!
I've been on several help sites... they tell me to download the firmware. I did that... but then I'm supposed to put it on my Archos, but the problem is that when I connect it to my computer,
Nothing happens...
It doesn't show up in my "hard drives" on my computer... or whatever, it's as if I hadn't plugged it in... I still have my white screen with "Recovery (code 104)"...
I'm "panicking," I'm going to get "killed" if my parents find out...
What should I do please?!
Thanks in advance... please respond quickly!

The problem happened to me too, I bought it on Rue du Commerce with a 4GB SD card
what I did
1 I removed the SD card
2 I then chose the "format" option
3 I connected the Archos to the PC (running Windows XP) - it eventually recognized the memory of the Archos (but only the memory, not the device)
4 I downloaded the OS v2.1.04 from the Archos website
5 I transferred this file to the root (in no directory)
6 I unplugged the Archos, restarted the Archos which reinstalled the OS
7 it seems to be working....

Hi everyone,
Lolo28300's explanation is correct EXCEPT for one point. The downloaded firmware must be copied to the root directory of the Archos, not to the "SYSTEM" directory.
See you
V.

For the Archos (605 for sure, and 604 probably) with hard drive, when code 102 appears (or 101 or something else, because apparently it's the same thing ...) there is only one thing to do, which I have done.
You turn on your little device, you listen carefully to the hard drive, and what do you hear?
Crrrh.. crr... Crrrh.. crr.. Crrrh.. crr...
The disk struggling and grinding. It is then that (after opening the device and checking that there is no problem with the hard drive connection) you need to give it a good hard hit, firm and sure, on the side of the device so that the hard drive restarts normally and you can hear the sweet sound of the disk spinning.

Ah, well there you go, nothing has changed. The read/write head must have been stuck.

Personally, I've tried everything, taking it apart, pressing on the LCD, tapping on the side
and tapping on the corner is the only thing that did anything ^^ there was indeed a regular clicking sound indicating a blockage, but by tapping in the corner, the Archos started up and now... it doesn't move past the "entertainment your way" and emits a whistling sound and repeated clicking...

I don't know much about Archos, but it might be due to a loose connection (the ribbon cable connecting the hard drive to your Archos could be unplugged) or the hard drive might be dead, in which case you can return it under warranty and they will either replace the hard drive or give you a brand new one, possibly with a few extra days of warranty as compensation! I've looked into it and apparently the customer service isn't slow (maximum 2 weeks)
Or else on this forum, a user had the same problem as you with an Archos 404 and another user gave him a solution that worked for him, so try it and keep me updated:
1. When it reboots/starts again, press the "LCD" button
2. When asked what you want to do, choose "Recovery"
3. Don't press "OK" right away, when the screen displays a message like "Connect your Archos to your computer and download an update file -> Done"
4. At that moment, connect the Archos to the computer and don't do anything with it for now
5.!!Download a "firmware" file, there are different ones, I took the oldest:
https://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWARE/Archos/Archos-404-Firmware-1205.shtml
BUT you can also download the newest firmware here: (don't forget to choose the model)
http://www.archos.com/support/download/firmware.html?country=global〈=en
6. After downloading it, copy it into the "SYSTEM" of your Archos
7. Now, press OK (the message with the "DONE" order should still be displayed!)

I don't know if my Archos is still under warranty ... :S
And the solution for the Archos 404 won't work for me, I think; I have an Archos 605... I'll still try :D thank you very much, I'll keep you posted ;)

How long have you had your Archos? And what does this :S mean? Did it fall from the ... ???
Well, if the solution should work, of course, you need to take the firmware for your Archos 605 and not for the Archos 404, but I'm going to let you search; I'm not going to give you everything either :p

I’ve had my Archos since May... but I’ve had to change it 3 times because each time there were problems. This happened to me once before, and we had to change the Archos, but it was still under warranty because I had just gotten it. Now, I don’t know if the warranty still applies... I haven’t checked.
Okay for the 404, I’m trying it now, I downloaded the firmware for the Archos 605, but I can't put it on my Archos since when I plug it in... nothing happens, no files open, and when I go to "My Computer" to open the hard drives or local drives... the Archos doesn’t appear on the list... my computer doesn’t detect it...
And ":s" is a smiley... sorry, it’s a habit, turn your head to the left... it makes a little guy :)

A user on another site:
I had the same problem with my Archos 405, but as soon as I changed the memory card it stopped happening. If yours has an SD slot, that might be it. Otherwise, contact Archos customer service.

But if you've had it since May, don't bother taking it apart or anything, just take it to the warranty service, that's what it's for!
Several internet users:
Basically, you turn on your Archos, you put your card in, and once you're done using it, take that card out. You should not turn off the 605 with the SD card inserted.
Hello, I had the same problem (editor's note: It doesn't even say in the manual how to insert secure digital cards!!!), I clicked "done" and it worked, but being stubborn, I sent it back to Darty to get the "water_drops" again (since then, I've never dared to put a Secure Digital back in for fear of losing my favorite wallpaper), but now that you mention it and my Archos is gobbling up gigabytes (5GB won't cut it), I would like to know the steps to follow to insert the SD cards please...
First of all, know that the best thing to do with the cards in the 605F is to remove them after each use (it's annoying, that's for sure!!). But it's the best way to avoid problems.
Then, when did you remove your card??? If you took it out while it was showing the error message, restart the Archos with the card inserted. If it doesn't restart properly, turn it off completely THEN only remove the card. If it restarts correctly, all is well. Remember to never start with an SD card inside, it always messes up for me!!!

I do have an SD card reader and I think that's what caused my Archos to bug out... since I inserted my friend's SD card into it... I just tried everything you told me... with the card... without the card... inserting it before, after... etc. nothing works... I still get the error page showing up... I will try again
thank you for your help :)
thank you for your help :)
You're welcome, it was a pleasure even though I didn't help you since your Archos still isn't working...
Have a good evening

I think I'm going to take it to the after-sales service, (after getting "yelled at" by my parents) .. I just got "yelled at" by my parents ... :(
Do you think it's still under warranty since May?

Why get yelled at? It's not your fault... It's not your fault he had a problem... Yes, I think it's still under warranty; there should be a standard 1-year warranty, it's Archos and not some unknown Chinese brand...
Have a good evening and good customer service xD

It may not be my fault... but I have changed Archos three times since May... and my brother got an Archos in December... and he has never had any problems... so naturally... one might think it's my fault. Okay for the warranty, thank you =D, it already lifts my spirits a bit...
Well then... Thank you for everything :) it's very kind of you, I’ll keep you updated as soon as I have news, even though in my opinion it won't be for a while (my parents..)
kisses,
thank you, you too :p
