MONEY 2005: Subcategory Entry

Hello,

If you have agreed to install the Money update, simply create
the following key in the registry:
- click on Start, Run
- type REGEDIT and confirm
- double-click on the following keys:
.HKEY_CURRENT_USER
.Software
.Microsoft
.Money
- click on key 14.0 to highlight it
- click on New in the Edit menu and select DWORD Value
- enter exactly the following name UseDualCatMode (replacing New
value #1)
- double-click on the DWORD value just created
- enter 1 in the "Value data" field and confirm by clicking on
"Ok"
- exit the registry editor
- launch Money

I understood you perfectly from the beginning, but I fear that you are not paying attention to my explanations:

* Money is a software whose display structure is relatively rigid: It is impossible to add or remove windows/input fields.
** It is pointless to split what is already available in one field into two fields; it would be a waste of time (two actions instead of one).
*** The logic of data storage in this software requires cascading input/reading/updating of sub-categories; the user is not free to create sub-categories outside of this framework.

If, for a reason I do not know because you have not yet expressed it, it is absolutely essential for you to have two distinct fields, there is only one solution: change software.

I regret being so blunt, but I do not understand your stubbornness, especially since I believed I had been sufficiently clear and explicit.

Hello, MC.

When you read "Automobile: Fuel" in the displayed field "Category," in reality, "Automobile" is the name of the Category and "Fuel" is the name of the Subcategory.

When you are in the dropdown list, the category names are aligned to the left; the subcategory names are slightly indented to the right, preceded by colons:
Thus, the selection of the subcategory is done directly, without going through 2 separate windows.

... and if you want to manage your subcategories, you need to click on "Categories" in the bar at the top of the screen.
In the "Define your categories" window that opens, you must ensure that the option "Display: Categories and subcategories" is selected.
At the bottom of this window, you have the necessary buttons to create, move, modify, or delete categories and subcategories.

I'm taking this slowly. You want to enter the payment for your Liability Insurance:
In the field designated for the "Category" entry, you deploy the dropdown list until you find
Insurance:
- Automobile
- Accidental Coverage
- Health Expenses Coverage
- Housing
- Liability
- Life,
you click on the sub-category Liability, continue your entry (date, amount, etc.) and validate.
This amount will be added to your expenses in the sub-category Liability, and will contribute to your total expenses in the category Insurance.

Actually, you need to define them beforehand by selecting "category," then "new," and then "add a subcategory to an existing category."
It's a bit lame compared to a previous version, but it has the advantage of limiting the creation of these subcategories.
