Download the latest service pack for Windows

A problem with a NVIDIA nForce(TM) SATA Driver driver has caused your computer to shut down and restart unexpectedly. This type of problem is commonly referred to as a "stop error" or "blue screen."

This problem has been fixed in Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

What is a service pack?

A software update that combines new security and performance enhancements with existing updates. Service packs can contain new features or design changes for a product.

Solution

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To fix this problem, download and install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 from Windows Update.

Click to open Windows Update

What if Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not listed as an available update?

There are many possible reasons why Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not listed. Here are three things you can try:

You might be running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 already. To check, follow these steps:

Click the Start button , right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

If Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is installed on your computer already, you will see it listed in the Windows edition section.

If you run Windows Update and one or more Windows Vista updates are available, but Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not listed, you should install the available updates first, and then run Windows Update again. To install all pending updates, follow these steps:

Make sure that all updates marked Important or Recommended are checked.

Click Install Updates to begin the installation. You might be asked to restart your computer when the installation is complete.

Run Windows Update and look for Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

If you tried the earlier steps without success, you can install the Standalone Windows Vista Service Pack 1 update by going online to the Microsoft Download Center website:

What if I don't want to install the service pack?

If you do not want to install the service pack at this time, an alternative solution exists, which is explained in a Knowledge Base article online at the Microsoft website:
