Question

I would like to know how to test the "validity" of a crossover RJ 45 network cable...

Indeed, I have connected two WIN98 PCs using a crossover cable, I was told that the settings on both PCs were correct, the network cards are new, ... In short, everything seems fine for my network to work.

However, that's not the case, so I was wondering if the cable is correct...

Hi!!
To check if your cable is crossed, it's simple:
you take the RJ45 connectors, turn them over to see the color of the wires, and if on both sides you have exactly the same series of colors, then it's not crossed.
A crossed cable does not show the same color mosaic of wires on each side, hence its name: crossed.

There are two solutions to test your cable:

The first one (the cheapest...) is to connect your cable to two PCs to check the functionality of your network. If both PCs are working correctly, then your cable is properly made.

The second solution is to use a device to directly test the RJ45 wiring. You should expect to pay about 50 € for the purchase of the device. This will allow you to test both the crossover cable and the straight-through cable.

If you use the economical method to test your cable (PC to PC), you must first assign an IP address to each PC. For example, you give the network card of PC 1 the address 192.168.0.10 and the card of PC 2 the address 192.168.0.11. Without the IP addresses, it won't work even if your cable is good.

Generally, there is a diode on the board. If the diode doesn't light up, it means the connection is not good: faulty board, faulty cable, or improperly connected cable.
A simple duplex connection uses wires 1-2-3-6.
