Startup screen in English Solved

Question

Hello,
Since the last Apple update 10.5.3, my startup screen is in English (restart, shutdown, etc.) the screen where you choose the profile. I have checked the "International" preferences and everything is set to "Swiss French". Am I the only one?

Configuration: Mac OS X Safari 525.20

The solution did not work in my case. However, I found this and things have returned to normal.

with a small necessary prior modification in my case for it to work

log in as Root (there's the addition)

-open the terminal and copy:

sudo "/System/Library/CoreServices/Language Chooser.app/Contents/MacOS/Language Chooser"

-enter the Root password
confirm with the enter key
A window opens, similar to the language selection during the system installation from the DVD.
-choose your primary language from the list that appears (for Login window)
and confirm with the arrow at the bottom right, the window disappears.
Close the terminal, restart
and it "speaks" French again :up::up::up:

Hello,

Some checks to do:
- in the 'System Preferences / International' menu, the French language must be at the top of the list, and this applies to all accounts, including root.

- from a Terminal window, run the command:
more /var/log/CDIS.custom

- Check that ' LANGUAGE=French'

If everything is correct, then from a Terminal window:
- Run the following command (copy/paste to avoid mistakes)
sudo "/System/Library/CoreServices/Language Chooser.app/Contents/MacOS/Language Chooser"

- Enter your administrator password, and validate by pressing the Enter key

- Choose your primary language from the list displayed (for Login window)

- Check that in the lines that will appear in the Terminal you have 'Setting boot completed':
2008-06-16 08:03:31.438 Language Chooser[18541:a0b] No /etc/rc.cdrom & No /var/db/.AppleCustomMac
Setting boot completed.
2008-06-16 08:03:49.795 Language Chooser[18541:a0b] Cannot load BootPanel.pdf from (null)

A priori, it's a permission issue because the file /var/log/CDIS.custom cannot be written.
Run a permissions repair using the 'Disk Utility' application.
Then try the operation mentioned earlier again.

For Ritchi,
Despite the permission repair, the issue persists. I tried to copy and paste with "sudo" as the first word, it asks me for a password? Which one? Mine as administrator? I tried, but it doesn't work, I can't go any further and I have to exit with Ctrl-C

Then, I repeated the steps as you explained, making sure to type "exit" to exit the Terminal. Restarted and voila...in French. Let's keep these exchanges so they can help other users.

Hello,
I just identified the source of the error. It is the software "ONYX" which, depending on the settings, resets the default language to English for the startup screen. I have changed the "international removal" settings and we'll see. I will keep you updated.

In System Preferences / International / Languages, you can uncheck the languages you don't use with the "Modify List" button, but you can also and especially drag up the languages you prefer to use in Finder. You "grab" the language with your "hand" and while holding down the mouse button, you drag it all the way to the top of the list. Did you do that with "French"??

Hello,

Since this file no longer exists, I suggest you recreate it, in case that is enough to resolve your issue.
This file simply contains the following line:

LANGUAGE=fr

Here’s how to create it using a basic text editor called vi.
From the administrator account on your Mac:
- open the utility "Applications / Utilities / Terminal": a window will open.
- type the command cd /var/log and press the return key
- type the command sudo vi CDIS.custom and press the return key
- enter the administrator password (it’s normal if nothing displays)
- you need to enter editing mode: to do this, press the i key (the one between u and o)
(the word -- INSERT -- appears at the bottom of the screen)
- type the following text respecting the case: LANGUAGE=fr
- exit editing mode: to do this, press the ESC key
(the word -- INSERT -- disappears from the bottom of the screen)
- save your work: for that press in succession:
* the key for the colon :
* the W key (I have capitalized it just for better readability, so no need to press Shift before pressing w)
* the Q key (I have capitalized it just for better readability, so ...)
* the 'return' key
If you did what I told you, then a message like this will appear:

CDIS.custom" [New] 1L, 12C written

It indicates that a new file called CDIS.custom containing 1 line and 12 characters has been written.

Now, you need to give the correct permissions to this file:
- run the following command sudo chmod 644 CDIS.custom

Alright, we're done!!
Shall we check our work?
Run the command more /var/log/CDIS.custom
You should get a response like this:

[imac-2:~] ritchi% more /var/log/CDIS.custom LANGUAGE=fr /var/log/CDIS.custom (END)

Now run the command ls -al /var/log/CDIS.custom
If you did your work well, you should have this as a response (except for the date which will be different for you):

[imac-2:~] ritchi% ls -al /var/log/CDIS.custom -rw-r--r--@ 1 root wheel 12 Feb 17 16:14 /var/log/CDIS.custom

Restart your Mac to check if it works.
