Hello everyone!
I currently have a black screen that says "missing operating system" when I start my PC.
I lost the installation CD that came with my PC during my move.
A friend is offering me their installation CD.
I wanted to know if I can use it.
Also, if I use it, will I lose all my data during the restoration of my operating system?
Could you provide me with either a link or detailed explanations (I am a beginner in the computer field) to guide me step by step in restoring my Windows XP Pro?
With all my thanks in advance.

"missing operating system" means that you no longer have an operating system, whether it's Windows or DOS!
You may have "simply" forgotten a disk in the drive, a faulty disk, a partition that has become invisible, or a Windows crash!
Try booting from a system disk; if you don't have one, go to bootdisk.com to get one.
Start from this disk (you will likely need to change the boot order for Floppy => CDROM => hard disk in the BIOS) and you will be able to see if there's still anything on your hard drive.
If so, it's not faulty, so that's already something!

Another solution, which will also allow you to recover your data, is to follow my solution at http://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/sujet 6531 to save your data before formatting (if your disk is good).

Only after that will you be able to reinstall with confidence.

Instead of formatting/installing, I would suggest trying to repair the disk's startup with the software TestDisk (free), but if you don't know much... it will be tough because it's not very intuitive even after reading the abundant documentation.

Thank you Hombourgeois for your clear answers.
My hard drive was originally partitioned into 2 during installation.
I wanted to do a recovery, but the first partition of my hard drive (C:) was completely empty. Unable to repair it, I had to completely reinstall my OS. The formatting was already done due to a "dumb mistake" that erased everything.
I am currently reinstalling everything.
I have another question regarding the recovery of my emails.
I use IncrediMail. Is it possible, after the reinstallation of my operating system (Windows XP Pro), to recover all my previous emails that were on that formatted partition? Is there software available for that?
Again, sincere thanks to you. You’ve given me a huge helping hand and I’ve been able to progress in the mysteries of computing.
