Save a game in progress on Game Boy

Hello,
I can't save a game in Pokémon Gold version of game color. When my son stops playing at a certain level of the game, we save following the usual procedure, and after the message "don't turn off," we wait and turn it off.
When we turn it back on to continue the game, we do not have access to the "continue" option. Every time we can only restart with a new game.
Can you tell me if it's a flaw in the game we bought second-hand or if there's a special procedure to follow? We have other Pokémon games that we have no trouble with.
