Hello nasonex

You could have started your own discussion, as this one is closed. That would probably have allowed you to receive more responses to your request.

The DVD format is MPEG 2 with a resolution of 720x576.
With MediaCoder, you go to Extensions --> DVD/SVCD/Tivo Player --> MPEG Maker.
In the settings of the new window, you specify Format MPEG-2, Resolution 720x576, and DVD bitrate (best quality) or SVCD (good quality).
I don’t touch the other indicators, but you can change them if you want; the same goes for the resolution if the image seems too stretched upwards, for example.
The output files have the extension .mpg, they are not in the AVI container (it should be possible to do that, but I don’t know how).
I tried otherwise, but almost every time the software produced no video files.

Be careful, besides being under the Firefox browser, to access the extended features of the software, I believe, it is not at all certain that the generated video file can be played by a stand-alone player that is not DivX compatible. Furthermore, this video format takes much more space than DivX or XviD, but the quality is indeed better.

To create a DVD-Video like commercial DVDs, you need to use an authoring software like Nero, ConvertXtoDVD, Ulead, Magix or others.
You also have the one from this discussion: http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich 5563767 divx dvd which seems to be free.

If you want to make video files in MPEG format, you can also use SUPER or TMPGenc (I do not know it).
SUPER seems easier to use because many formats are set automatically.
I’m leaving two tutorials for this software since it's in English:
You specify, if I remember correctly, mpg SVCD or something like that.

Best regards

Hello flyer 31

- To add a file for conversion, you can use the Add button or simply drag and drop your file.

- The Audio tab is used to set the audio codec you want.
- The Video tab is for choosing the Container (AVI, MP4, others) and the Video Format (codec) (XviD, H;264, MPEG1, other). You can also choose the number of encoding passes (1, 2, or 3) with Mode. The default video bitrate (Kbps) is set to 800, you can change it for better video output quality.
Under this tab, you can also choose the encoder you want to use, it’s Source, but to start, I recommend leaving it on MEncoder.
- Under the Image tab, you can define the image resolution (size) or not, that’s Resize. Similarly, you can modify the number of frames per second, which is 25.000 by default, I believe.

Next, another important part of the software concerns the Extensions, where you have the ability to encode for portable devices such as phones (3gp), digital media players (iPod, Archos, others), or even for game consoles like the PSP.

There you go, a quick overview of the main functions of MediaCoder.

Best regards

For your version, it's fine, the latest being 0.6.1.4116 (there are often updates)

In the video tab, just indicate Format XviD and Container AVI. For the audio tab, it's LAME MP3.
You need to search in the dropdown list, XviD is the first and AVI the second right under Default.

See you!

Hi,

I would like to convert a video file to AVI format to burn it onto a DVD and then be able to play it with a DVD player.

Do you think MediaCoder will allow me to do this, please?

Thank you.

Hello
It is important to use an up-to-date version

Loading MediaCoder!
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/getfile.htm?site=sf&file=MediaCoder-0.6.1.4045.exe
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/getfile.htm?site=sf&file=mediacoder-codecs-20071118.exe

On this last page, on the following sentence, click on "this link"

If the download doesn't begin automatically after some time, please click <<this link>> in blue on the site

Once the software is installed and started, switch to French

>options>user interface language>>> choose French

(stop the program and restart it for the language choice to take effect)

If you want the simple interface, do
>options > user interface > Simple mode

The extensions menu (dropdown, not the button) allows you to adjust
the output format settings simply
by choosing your usage (player, dvd,...)
but limits the adjustment possibilities

Once you have understood the software in simple mode, you can consider the normal mode

Best regards
JC

Hello Alaeddinetaktak,

MediaCoder or SUPER are two software programs that allow you to convert a lot of video formats into formats readable on home players. However, they must be DivX compatible.
I've read that it is also possible to create VCD or SVCD from these two software programs, but I don't know how that works.

You can definitely use MediaCoder to create a video file in AVI format (container) with an XviD video codec (format) and a Lame MP3 audio codec, for example.
However, it's better if your original video file is a single piece since joining different files isn't a simple task.

When you have converted your file, I would recommend burning it to a rewritable RW disk to see if the result is satisfactory.

Best regards

Hello,

thank you all.
Mediacoder seems to be great...
But my new home player reads the .AVI extension
;-)

All the best.

Hello!
I want to burn .avi files onto a CD or DVD (depending on the file size) so that they can be played on a standalone DVD player.
When using MediaCoder, which audio and video formats should I choose?
(Preferably not DivX, I want the same format as commercially purchased DVDs).
Thank you in advance for your help and advice.

MediaCoder version: 0.6.1 4045

It's XviD and not DivX.
And what do you have just above H.264?

See you!

Well, download this one "Free Video Converter" (I don't know it but it's supposedly pretty good): https://torchbrowser.com/

It's the second one from the bottom, from the list on the right.

Cheers

Hi,

Try using Format Factory, VirtualDub, or SUPER.

Thank you very much ^^
I am also looking to convert videos that are in MPEG (or MP4 apparently according to the properties) to AVI, and I can't manage to do it. =/

The same software + Avidemux.
For VirtualDub, you need to have the codecs + AvySynth and the plugins to be able to open files other than AVI.

Just a reminder if necessary that AVI is just a container file format, with videos that can be in DivX or XviD, for example.

Hello
I have a 1.1GB MKV file to convert to AVI, and MediaCoder says it will take almost an hour to convert. Is that normal?
Thank you for your opinions.

Hello,

Without knowing the characteristics of the file to be encoded, nor what kind of file you want to obtain, therefore the encoding parameters set, nor the configuration of your machine, it may be quite normal.

Now, for me, if I set an SD resolution (640x360 for example), a video bitrate in XviD of 1000 Kbps, and audio in MP3, it should take 1/3 of the duration of the movie because the performance speed is about 3X. So for a file of 1H30, it takes about 30 minutes in single pass, a bit less in fact since the speed is a bit higher..

Thank you ziggurat, my problem is that the files I convert to AVI don't play on my home player...
First, it told me the resolution was higher than 720 X 450 or something like that, so I changed the resolution to 720 X 400, XVID format, but it's still not working, at least I can play the video but every 5 minutes I have to restart it because it stops...
And on top of that, the quality is terrible...!!!
With your resolution, you must have really poor quality, right???

Use a simpler software like XMedia Recode for example, to name just one.
MediaCoder is more suited for those experienced in video encoding.

As for the quality of the video, it's up to you to decide what bitrate, usually expressed in Kbps, you want to set.
For resolution, on a standalone player connected via SCART, it should not exceed 720x576 or 700x404 in 16:9 for example.
For AVI files, the codec choice is XviD or DivX, and again, it’s up to you to know what to choose based on your standalone DVD player.

A 1.5-hour movie weighing 700 MB with audio in MP3 at 128 Kbps has a video bitrate of about 950 Kbps. If you increase this rate, your file will be larger.
I clarify that it is unnecessary to set a bitrate higher than the original since the principle of conversion is generally to compress the video.
