F:\Application not found

Hello,

I know there have been many topics on this subject already, but none of the answers have solved my problem, which is why I'm bringing it up again.
Actually, I have a WD 5000AAJ EXTERNAL USB DEVICE 500GB hard drive that was working perfectly well; I lent it to a friend and now it doesn't work anymore.
When I double-click it, I get an error message that says F:\Application not found, and I don't even see the hard drive logo anymore. I now have to right-click and select open to access my hard drive.
I found an answer on your site which says I need to go to the properties of my hard drive, then tools, and check for errors. After the check, I can open it just once with a double click and then it shows F:\Application not found again.

PLEASE HELP ME, I need assistance
Configuration: Windows Vista Internet Explorer 7.0

start menu>run>type cmd then press enter
in the window that opens, type the following instructions one by one, each followed by enter:

cd\
f:
attrib -a -s -h -r
del *.inf
exit

disconnect your hard drive then reconnect it, and try to see what happens.

Ok, you display hidden files in the computer by going to the tools menu > folder options > view, show hidden files and system protected files.
Once done, in the address bar type f: then press enter.
You should find an autorun file, delete it, then disconnect and reconnect your hard drive, it should work.
I await your response.

Thank you for responding to my distress call, but I did what you advised and nothing. I still get F:\Application not found
Another solution please, I'm open to suggestions.

So I want to make sure that the display of hidden files works or not. Try to show hidden files and protected files on partition C, let me know if it works or not.

I am a bit of a beginner in computing, what does partition C mean?
Already the autorun file on my external hard drive was not a hidden file. I deleted it anyway, but as I told you, I still get F:\Application not found.

Ok, I got it. The display of hidden files works well. And now, what should I do?

Merci beaucoup, ça fonctionne bien maintenant, tu es un génie en informatique. Dommage que le logo du disque dur ne s'affiche pas.
Je suis trop contente. Tu sais la raison de ce problème ?

Ok, I'm waiting for you. Enjoy your meal.
I would like to know:
1) Why did I have this problem?
2) Why does my hard drive no longer display automatically (in autorun) when I plug it in?
3) Is it possible to recover the logo of the hard drive? Because before, I could easily differentiate my internal disks from my external ones thanks to the logo.
4) Why, when I want to safely remove it, are there 2 hardware devices, namely the so-called Generic Volume - (F:) but also my hard drive, that is to say WD 5000AAJ External USB Device?
Can you please answer my 4 little questions?
Thank you in advance.

Thank you, I'll try:
1/ you have what we call malware, it's a bit like a virus, but it isn't detectable by certain antivirus software, it spreads through flash disks and external drives. Fortunately, it's not unavoidable, you just need to understand how it works.
you might still be infected, tell me when you click on the partitions of the internal drive, does it open in a new window or in the main window? A report from hijackthis would be very useful, download it and post the report here.
2/ autorun doesn't work anymore because it has been replaced by another application. Autorun is in a file called autorun.inf, this malware replaces the autorun.inf file with another one that contains the command to execute the executable file. When you double click on an external hard drive, it begins its work.
3/ it's possible to retrieve your hard drive logo, but I don't know how exactly, I'll look into that. You'll have my answer.
4/ I didn't quite understand, when you unplug do you have two devices? Try using the left button of the mouse, it's more convenient.

Hi,
I found a discussion about the F:\ application not found issue, where you had the solution.
Could you please help me?
This error message is also showing up for me when I try to use my CD/DVD drive.

As agreed, I'm sending you the HijackThis report
4) Yes, I have 2 peripherals but I only have my external drive connected. When I shut down it shows 2 peripherals

In fact, it's simple "maybe" to find the logo, the same thing, you do
start menu > run > type cmd then enter
in the window that opens type the following instructions, one by one each followed by enter:

cd\
f:
attrib -a -s -h -r
del *.ini
exit

Thank you for marking the problem as Resolved.

Hello,
I've encountered similar issues with the hard drive double-click: application not found. Right-clicking to open or explore doesn't work. My solution is the address bar.
But I will try your solution proposed to Nel. Here is my report.

That's not all. My big concern after the hard drive that doesn't open is that Excel documents are impossible to read. What should I do? I have important data from tough days, even months on that, please find me a solution.

Hi mellissaandree

So, it would be better to post your issue in a new topic here, that way you’ll have a better chance of getting help from several people. Hi and good luck!

Ok, I’m waiting for the report.
However, for the logo, when I do del *.ini, it shows me "Cannot find F:\*.ini".

No risk in your report, except for one entry, but that's not a big deal. You can try to find your logo.

I don't understand:

do this:

start menu>run>type cmd then press enter
in the window that opens, type the following instructions, one by one, each followed by enter:

cd\

Thank you very much for your help, really nice.
Well, that erases everything I have on my external hard drive
" The volume in drive F is called Elements
The serial number of the volume is B21F

Directory of F:\
06/09/2007 19:09 <DIR> SERIES
12/02/2008 12:24 348 160 msvcr71.dll

Well, I have another issue to say. I tried to insert a DVD and nothing shows up, I can't even see my CD drive displayed.
Oh dear, this is starting to annoy me.
