Despite the fact that this issue dates back several years, I find myself in 2012 with the same problem as you others.
Already, it's very surprising that I notice that no one has provided precise and concrete answers. Because generally, when the device manager indicates "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)", it means that it is a generic graphics card, meaning that the PC does not have a proper graphics card but that the motherboard contains a generic one that allows for troubleshooting. To know what type of update to perform, you indeed need to know the chipset of your motherboard. In my case, it's an Asrok 775VM800.
To resolve this issue, either buy a proper graphics card (a real one) or perform an update knowing the chipset, but I know it and I'm stuck. It's an old PC still on a single core dating from 2006 or 2007 that I bought from a store that builds desktop PCs, but the store no longer exists, and I can no longer call the seller to help me explain.

I have a question mark under the graphics card: video controller (vga compatible) the update I launch from the manager does not succeed because it asks for a CD, but the seller never gave me a CD for that. It seems that the update wants to go through because I see the yellow folders transferring files, but it keeps doing that continuously as long as I don't insert that damned CD.
