Cossacks European War: startup error.

Solved

Hello,
I have a big problem with Cossacks European Wars on my Windows XP SP2:
The installation goes smoothly, no issues, but when I start the game, I first get a black screen for 5 seconds and then the infamous error message (dmcr.exe -> game launch executable): "dmcr.exe encountered a problem and needs to be closed. We are sorry for the inconvenience." and a bunch of text along with the 3 options: Debug, Don't send an error report, and Send an error report.

The weirdest part is that it doesn't work on my desktop computer, but it does on my laptop! Even though the configurations are a bit different, the operating system is Windows XP SP2 in both cases. I should note that Cossacks worked on my desktop PC BEFORE I reinstalled it.

I have looked everywhere, and apparently, I'm not the only one with this problem. But none of the proposed solutions have worked: Deleting the Video folder (which contains the intros), running the game in compatibility mode for Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT, setting the resolution to 800x600 to see if it works better, downloading the latest drivers for my graphics card (a GF 7800 GS)...

This is one of my favorite games, PLEASE help me!

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa you are awesome, thanks to you I succeeded, thank you and see you later. For those unfortunate ones who couldn't make it with Vista: program, cossack, soundconfig (set to eight channels), delete that damn video folder and run the game as administrator. That's it, bye!

Hi,
I have successfully reinstalled the old stuff, but
I'm now on Vista SP1, and of course, Cossack doesn't work anymore: unable to initialize Direct Draw? And it crashes.
What to do?
Thanks

Hi everyone!
I know the topic has been widely discussed, but I think it's good to share my little discovery with as many people as possible...
Cossacks European Wars (v1) has had many compatibility issues with Windows XP and Vista: "dmcr.exe has stopped working" and "The game will not run without the original CD Rom" (frustrating when you actually own it) are some of the most glaring examples.
Many responses have been provided, and most only work half the time. It was by combining several of them that I managed to find a compromise that works on both XP AND Vista.
So here’s my little discovery:

1/ After installation, go directly to Programs/Cossacks and rename the "Video" folder to "Video1" (Be careful, do not delete it!)
2/ Use the following link:
http://gbw.naxpllc.net/dl.php?file=Cossacksv1.0NoCDFixedexeEngGer.zip
3/ Download the file:
*on XP, you can run it directly and unzip it under Program Files/Cossacks (replace files for all)
*on Vista, save it to a folder, unzip it, copy the files, and go paste them under Programs/Cossacks (replace files for all).

There you go, everything should work!
Enjoy!!

Thank you albatros25000 :)

I will put your tip in a corner of my computer and, on the day I play it again, I will take note of it.
Thanks again to you, I will write something here in case it doesn't work.

Thank you, but when I launch the game, it gives me an error message saying components not found.

What should I do?

Thank you for your response.

The link you mentioned in point 2 leads to a site but not to the Cossacksv1.0NoCDFixedexeEngGer.zip
It's still a piece of crap Windows... or should I say WINDAUBE
I'm switching to MAC
Thank you for your help

No need to delete anything, try right-clicking on the desktop, properties, then settings, troubleshooting, and set it to full hardware acceleration.
Give it a try.

Yes, I think so too that it comes from a Windows update or another program, but how can you know which update not to install? :D

For your information, none of the proposed solutions work whether it’s on XP or Vista... Do you know another solution?

Sorry albatros25000 but for me it doesn't work either under XP SP2 or under Vista SP2.

Indeed, you need to delete the "video" folder; it worked during one or two sessions.

Well, at the time of the crash: back to the desktop without a black screen!
What I did beforehand: four thousand units on the map and increased the resolution to 1400x1200 and slowed down the game speed (intentionally)
Trigger event: I tried to load a save (first time I was doing it)

Since then, it's as if I hadn't removed the "video" folder; it tells me that my CD is not the original!

What should I do?

I've already tried that but it was already full. So I also tried without it but it didn't change anything...
Another solution?

I believe that everything discussed on the forums has been tried without positive results.
I installed it on Win98 and it runs well, unlike SP2 of XP.
If a solution ever exists to run this game on SP2, please feel free to post it here, thanks in advance.

we can do it, it's a story with the intros but I no longer remember how to do it.

I found out how to do it, it's because of the intro. Rename the videos in "desktop, Cossacks, video, and rename them any way you like

good luck

Already tried, it doesn't come from there.. In my opinion, it comes from an XP update, but which one? On my laptop, it works but not on my desktop even though both are running XP SP2... But the laptop is much less up to date.

Hi!

I have the same problem with the game.
I haven't played it in a long time, but when I reinstall it, I get the following error message:
"Direct Draw Init Failed (80004001)" then dmcr.exe encounters a problem and closes.

So I can't launch the game.

I've installed the game on two different computers, both running Windows XP SP2.
On my desktop, it works very well, while on my laptop, it causes this bug.
I've tried all the solutions I found with no success.

A good solution would be welcome.

thank you

Hi

when I start Cossacks, the screen goes white or black for 2-3 seconds and then everything goes back to normal.

I think the problem comes from my ATI graphics card...
If someone knows a solution for me, it would be nice to share it.
I'm still unable to play it.

Sorry, I haven't found a solution to the problem yet; I've just switched my PCs to Vista to make it work, but under XP, I really don't know what's wrong...

And what's the most annoying part is that we don't know where it comes from... because it's funny but while it doesn't work on my PCs at home running XP, I try it at work (still XP) and then it works perfectly... and it's not an old PC, yet it runs with 3.5 GB of memory and an E6750... unbelievable, right?
