... And under Ubuntu, it's even simpler: you can configure the Caps Lock key to no longer produce numbers, but accented uppercase letters... (So it's much more productive) For numbers on a laptop, you just need to hold down Shift...

It works VERY well, it's AWESOME. ;)
(And, just in case someone is wondering, I should mention that you can very easily switch back to the normal configuration if you have to type a lot of numbers on a laptop without a numeric keypad.)

I have an HP dv6-3124nr. To use accents, I activated my virtual keyboard that appears on my computer screen, and I selected the option to use the numeric keypad, and it works very well. Hello,
Under Vista, just click on "Insert," then on "Symbols" and "More Symbols." All the letters with accents and special characters will be displayed. Just select the letter you want, especially the E with an acute accent if that's what you're looking for.

For all the diacritics, I use a new keyboard layout, and it’s more efficient, quicker to learn, than the azerty.
The keyboard layout is francophone and ergonomic.

In general, the reactions are: Why? ... it’s complicated...
But when people try it, their opinions change.
It’s less of a hassle than learning on azerty.
The prolonged learning period for azerty has made us forget all its flaws. However, switching from bépo to azerty makes us see all its shortcomings again.
On bépo, on the home row, I have vowels on one side and consonants on the other.

There are key combinations (É = [Alt]+0201) but the simplest is to install the MAEL keyboard layout (free) that solves the problems of uppercase accented letters (É, ...), c-cedilla (Ç), French quotation marks (« and »), E and A in O (oe and æ).
