Any video with a black screen but with sound

Hi everyone
Here is my problem;
whatever videos I want to play (avi, mpeg, wmv.......) I have sound but no picture.
However, I do have the picture on the thumbnails.
In no way is this a codec problem for two reasons:
1: I have already checked the forums and installed or updated all the DivX and other media player software.
2: I have had this problem several months ago and I fixed it by changing the settings of a program. (The problem is I didn't note it down and I can't remember how I did it)
I know that if I format and reinstall, everything will work again, but I don't want to go that route.
If someone has solved this problem, please give me the solution.
