Display issue in 1080p with my PS3 Solved/Closed

Hello,
So, I have a problem with the 1080p display of my PS3.

I own a Sharp LC42XD10E Full HD LCD, and when I set the display of my console, it won’t switch to 1080p. So I have to select 1080i, otherwise I get a black screen. I want to emphasize that I am properly connected via HDMI.
This is quite annoying when I want to watch a good Blu-ray, as I currently don’t have any games that take advantage of 1080p.

I really can’t see where the problem could be coming from?!

hi,

for your story, once the ps3 is turned on, try holding down the reset button until you hear a double "beep".
Then the ps3 should reset its video and audio settings according to your TV and your connections.

Hi,  Your TV or HDMI version is not compatible with this mode.  1080p is difficult to display because it is non-interlaced.

What reassures me (halfway) is that I have the same problems as you!
PS3 - HDMI 1.3 cable for PS3 - 1080p LCD (Samsung 40 inch full HD)
The maximum resolution accepted is only 576i, so not great!
With a higher resolution, there is snow on the screen that appears.

The TV has a game mode but it doesn't change anything in the situation.
Identical results on the 3 HDMI inputs.
PS3 update has been done (version 2.1 I believe)

I think I found the why and how!
On my Sharp Full HD, I can't display 1080p with my PlayStation because these two devices don't have the same HDMI version. The PlayStation 3 is in HDMI v1.3 and my TV is in v1.2, and consequently, it can't work. At least that's what a DARTY salesman told me!
But I can go up to 1080i or 720p, while you are stuck at 576i, which is really low.
I don't have a solution to your problem, maybe just wait because that Darty salesman also told me that HDMI 1.2/1.3 adapters should be coming out! But we'll see...

I have a SHARP LC-42XD10E Full HD. For Christmas, I got myself a PS3. I hooked it up via HDMI, and bam, same issue, I don't get 1080 P, only 1080 I.

The person from Darty is talking nonsense. The difference between HDMI 1.2 and 1.3 is mainly a matter of bandwidth for audio. So that can't explain the inability to run in 1080 P. It's quite frustrating, but I don't have an answer to give at the moment.

Still, tonight I'm going to try the double beep technique, we'll see how it goes.

In my opinion, it seems to be an HDCP issue,  the screen needs to be HDCP compatible in order to display 1080p via HDMI. If the screen is not HDCP compatible, a solution is to connect using VGA or component/composite (the HD one between the two, I can never remember which).

Hello everyone, with a full HD screen you certainly cannot set the display to 1080p, but if you play a Blu-ray, you will notice that your full HD screen reads it in 1080p. The 1080p is currently only used for BD (see BD (DVD) settings). The display settings only concern games and the PS3 interface which is only in 1080i. I can't choose 1080p either, but I still watch Blu-rays in 1080p. If you have an info button on your TV remote, check it out. Games are only in 720p for now (but still adaptable on full HD screens). However, when I play a Blu-ray, I occasionally have some image stuttering, which is a bit annoying. I've tested my cable, my TV, my setup... I don't really know where it comes from... maybe my HDMI 1.3 cable bought from Micromania...? My setup: PS3 connected via HDMI 1.3 to Samsung full HD 117cm with HDMI 1.3 port.

Hi, so, I tried to see how the Blu-rays play on my PS3, and they play fine since the console is configured in 1080i and not 1080p. Looking through my TV's info menu, I can see that the resolution does not change. That's it, just wanted to say that it's not there yet. Thanks everyone.

Stop looking, I found it.
I have a PS3, a Samsung 102 cm full HD TV, and an HDMI cable that cost "9" euros, and of course it goes with it. When I set my console to 1080p, I got beautiful interference on the screen (lots of noise). Supported display: standard, 720p, 1080i but not 1080p.
Out of curiosity, I went to Darty and saw that there were HDMI cables for over 150 euros. I explained my problem to a salesperson and without hesitation, he advised me to get a high-quality HDMI cable. I then opted for a "gold" cable for 50 euros.
To my pleasant surprise, when I plugged in my new cable, I no longer had any interference.
Of course, with such high-end equipment, I shouldn't have tried to save 40 euros on a cable.
Be careful because some salespeople, whose names of the stores I will not mention, told me that a cable is a cable and that there was no difference, without being able to explain the price difference between them.
So stop looking, don't hesitate to get a quality HDMI cable.

Hello everyone! A full HD plasma doesn't necessarily mean it supports 1080p input via HDMI! If it does support it, it should have a sticker saying '1080p input compatible'! Check the plasma's manual! But the sellers don't mention that!

To display 1080p, there must be a full HD LCD or plasma equipped, especially with an HDMI 1.3, a player or a PS3 with an HDMI 1.3, and a certified FULL HD 1.3 HDMI cable, for example, PHILLIPS +/- 50 euros.

Beware of anyone who says that the PS3 interface is only 1080i because that's false. On my Philips 42pfl7662D, it works perfectly in 1080p: PS3 interface, games, Blu-rays, etc.

Hello, I had the exact same problem as well. After so many hours trying to find a solution, I was so disgusted to have invested in a PS3 that I sold it and bought myself an Xbox 360 Elite. Since then, I haven't had any problems at all. If you're afraid to make the leap to Microsoft, don't hesitate because it's a great console. You'll be able to have a blast like crazy. As for Sony, I'm done, I don't want to hear about it anymore. I wish you good luck.

Regarding the problem of recognizing CDs and DVDs and displaying them, the issue may come from your last update; indeed, Sony has acknowledged releasing a 2.41 version that crashed certain models of PS3, so in that case, there's only one solution: return it to the sender (Sony). They do take the inconvenience into account, as they say. As for the other problems, it's a compatibility issue. We're sold HD ready, Full HD, HD, but they "forget" to tell us the standards, and yes, there are several standards, but to avoid confusing the consumer, they don't discuss it. Consequently, we end up with a Full HD PS3 that's compatible by excellence, as it's one of the best HD players on the market at the moment, and a Full HD TV that's not compatible with 1080p, for example, which is still very rare but does exist. It’s a matter of connectivity and not cables, because indeed, the quality of the cable will affect image quality and interference, but it won't determine whether it works or not. In the case where a person has changed their cable and it started working again, it could be that the cable was defective and wasn't transmitting a certain standard.

I tested with my three monitors since I also could only display 720p or 1080i
The problem was the cable; I was using a 1.2 cable and after trying with a 1.3, everything works perfectly in 1080p on all three monitors I tested.
Whether for playing games or watching a Blu-ray movie or even films via UPnP
If your monitor is native 1080p, it will be able to display that resolution ;)

Regarding resolution in games, I work in a major game company and I don't know of any titles that run at 1080p. I will look into it further.
When trying Call of Duty 5 (WAW), my monitor displays at 1080p, but when observing the character definition, there is a noticeable pixelation around them (for sure it's a native blow-up from 720p to 1080p).

I still need to confirm if all games are in half HD (720p) and if this measurement applies equally on PS3 and Xbox 360 (WII, we won't discuss).

As for movies, UPNP and Blu-ray, it's a well-defined 1080p.

For those wondering if 1080i versus 1080p is noticeable: It depends on the distance you are from the monitor.
I use a 25" monitor 3 feet away from me. I can't stand 1080i. There's a clear difference in sharpness + an annoying flicker. The response time is faster in 1080p; when you pan in a game (turning in one direction), the image remains fluid and sharp at 1080p, but blurs in 1080i. Note that 1080i = 33hz and 1080p goes up to 65hz, so the refresh rate is doubled.

When I watch a Blu-ray movie on a 42" from 18 feet away, I hardly see the difference between 1080i and 1080p.

To change the format (change it to 1080p) or something else, you might go to Settings / Display Settings / Video Output Settings and set it to HDMI if the console hasn't done it automatically. That might be why it remains in a lower resolution or why some things are not displaying.

Indeed, I have the same problem; you need to adjust the PS3 in the settings to switch to 1080. For me, only 1080i works; I get snow in 1080p.
I do think it's a cable issue, and I'm going to buy one to be sure, and I'll send you my results.
However, my screen automatically switches to 720p on Call of Duty 4 and 6, while on Gran Turismo Prologue I am fine in 1080. Who knows!!!

Problem solved for PS3, snow on screen above 720p. I switched to a quality composite HDMI cable and also separated the sound output via optical line. The result is perfect; I can even switch to 1080p. So to recap, use a quality composite HDMI cable + separate the audio from the display.

Hello everyone,  So, I've been using my PS3 with an HDMI cable on a PHILIPS 107 cm Full HD 1080p LCD screen (as stated on it) since I bought the console (back in 2008).  I've never had any display issues with my console or my screen since I combined the two, but about 2 weeks ago, while I was in the middle of a game, the screen went black (no sound, no image) with a message saying "no video signal."  I turned off my console, turned it back on, and... suuprise! Still no sound or image, and after the "no video signal" message, I got a message saying "unsupported video format."  Since then, I've been playing with a SCART cable (where I have no display issues). Where does the problem come from? Console? Screen? HDMI cable?  Thanks in advance  P.S: Occasionally, I manage to restart the console with HDMI, but the problem recurs every time and after varying amounts of time; sometimes the sound/video display cuts off immediately upon starting the console (when we see the PS3 logo), sometimes it happens after an hour of play, etc. It doesn't happen with a consistent frequency, and of course, after that, I can no longer start the console with HDMI for also varying lengths of time (it could be one hour or several days).

LOL, that's not the problem. Your screen is 1080p compatible, but that doesn't mean you can use it unless you have secondary equipment such as an audio and video amplifier to upscale the signal from your PS3 to 1080p.

For all the people who have a full HD 1080p screen with an HDMI 1.3 port and can't check 1080p on their console, I finally have the answer.For connecting my console, I bought a full HD 1080p compatible HDMI cable at Boulanger for €39.90, and nothing worked; I couldn't get 1080p. I inquired with sellers, searched through forums, and yesterday I took the time to try another HDMI cable I had (bought for €10), and magic, it finally accepted the 1080p resolution. The quality is much better, but having both support (PS3 Xbox360), the Xbox still has the best game quality; it's cleaner, thanks to Microsoft.

I can't display 1080p on the PS3 menu or in games (when I test it, it shows "Unsupported mode"), but it works fine with Blu-ray, so I thought, okay, I won't look any further. Recently, I had the chance to test the new Xbox Slim with Kinect, and surprise, with my TV and the same HDMI cable, I get a 1080p display without any problem. I thought, well, the PS3 must have taken a hit, great, plus it’s probably out of warranty. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to test it on a 32" LG LED in Full HD, I don't remember the exact model, so I connected my PS3 with my HDMI cable from Micromania and tested it, miracle, it works... the only problem is that it's not my TV, and I bought the Samsung specifically for the PS3, so I would like to find out where the problem lies since all three setups work correctly: Samsung + HDMI cable + Xbox works, LG + HDMI cable + PS3 works, but Samsung + HDMI cable + PS3 doesn't work  Does anyone have an explanation? Well, the last message is a bit old, but I have to respond. Monster cables = a big scam/a total rip-off. Like all the cables at Boulanger, Darty, etc., these cables are expensive and nothing exceptional.  You need an HDMI 1.3 cable with no shielding or gold plating for less than €5 to run a PS3 in 1080p. My cable cost €2.40 two years ago, bought online at the same time as my PS3, and it works great in 1080p. And if unfortunately, you have interference, only then consider buying a shielded cable (for less than €30). But definitely not a cable for €100!!  The salespeople in these physical stores know nothing; they sell crappy connectors, their €15 cable doesn't even work, so it's not surprising that they manage to sell you cables for €80... Help!  Between those who can't write three words without making 15 mistakes or more and those who spout off nonsensical theories without knowing what they're talking about, at least it made me laugh a lot.  So here's the solution. I have 3 PS3s (Japanese first generation, Euro second generation, and Euro slim third generation). I've taken them all apart at one time or another to fix hardware issues (optical drive, HDD, ...). Recently, when I bought my slim to replace the Euro v2, I used the same HDMI cable and had snow, a crappy image,... I tried plugging it into another HDMI port and had the same problem. I unplugged my media player to use its HDMI cable and had no issues.  Now it seems that some PS3s are more sensitive than others; the "fat" models are less susceptible to interference than the slims, and the first models are even less sensitive than the subsequent fat generations, probably due to the construction of their power supply unit.  So to avoid issues, my advice (but do what you want; I'm not going to make five trips back and forth to change the cable) is that gold-plated connectors are better, use cables with external plastic shielding, and I strongly advise against metal shielded cables, which caused problems 50% of the time in my tests.
