Folder converted to file

Hello,
I have several folders that, due to a virus or something else, have become files that I cannot open.
When I run a scan with the antivirus, it detects the number of files in that folder, but there’s no way to open them since they appear as files with no extension. (When I click on them, it opens the window "Choose the program to use to open this file.")
Please help me as these folders are very important.
Thank you.
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 2.0.0.9

Try this:

This trick will only work if you have been infected by a virus that has modified a system file for folder customization: "desktop.ini".

Open any folder in the explorer. Then, from the menu, go to "Tools" --> "Folder Options"
- Select the "View" tab
- Uncheck the box "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" and respond "Yes"
- Click "OK" until you exit and close the window.

1- open the "Run" dialog (Start menu --> "Run" or press "Windows" + "R")
2- type "My Documents" in it then click "OK"
3- repeat step 1 then type "C:\" and click "OK"

Then delete the "desktop.ini" files in "My Documents" and "C:\". Now open "C:\" from "My Computer" and it works.

Hope this helps you...

Hello,
I have the same problem as mmm since Sunday.
For your information, I had just formatted Windows, and this happened on a hard drive connected via IDE to a PCI card (to add IDE ports - 2 ports, so 4 additional drives) one of my hard drives is in RAW format and the other in NTFS.
The folder was a basic folder and it transformed into a type: "System file" (it has no known icon in Windows).

- I have already tried to open it with explorer.exe. It tells me: "Downloading file" when I save it, it copies the system file to the destination folder.

- The attempt with "new task" does nothing either.

- Then, I tried searching with Windows, I typed a file that was placed in a subfolder of this one and nothing at all, it doesn't find anything.

- Last resort, I tried with easy recovery, and I found them in data recovery mode. So, if there is no other solution, I will go through that.

I think I will try to talk to some structure professors to see if there is a way to bypass the parent-child file system to access it.

Thank you in advance if you find a solution.

Hello mmm,

is the folder that is inaccessible to you a device, such as an external hard drive or a USB key?

Otherwise, please tell me where your folder is located. I need more information.

Best regards,
Keajyto.

Thank you, Keanjyto, for your attention.
The converted files are located on my local hard drive.
Even the "My Documents" folder has met the same fate.

Well, try this:

- when "choose the program to open this file" appears, click "Browse," then copy/paste "%SYSTEMROOT%\explorer.exe" --> "Open" --> "OK" and the folder should open in Explorer.

- if that doesn't work, open Task Manager and click "New Task..." --> Open the inaccessible folder and move its contents to another folder.

- if it still doesn't work: create a new session and go to "My Documents" in that new session to see if they are accessible or not and let me know.

- if despite all this it still doesn't work, I will give you a trick under the Windows command prompt.

Sorry, I have nothing, but it was just to ask you to post the solution if you find it so that others who might be in the same problem have the solution. Thank you.

Best regards,
Keanjyto.
