Win Messenger +, white square under contact photo

Question

Hello,

I installed Windows Messenger Plus! a few days ago and I noticed that a small white square appeared under the photo of one of my contacts in the conversation window.
Can someone tell me what it means, please???

Hello, it's not a small white square with a drawing that looks like a camera in it under the correspondent's image on the left; if that's the case, it means the correspondent is equipped with a webcam.

I also have this white square on one of my contacts (it's the one I talk to the most, he only has it with me as well) but no bugs have occurred since it appeared.

I found a good solution: you need to open the MSN windows of all your contacts (without exception, even those who are not online), say something to them, and then close them all very quickly. Strangely, it works; no more white squares... it's a weird thing, though.

I have the white square, my sharing folders are blocked, all my contacts are asking me if I also have this white square, suddenly disconnected when I didn't do anything, even so-called problems with the address and password, WHAT'S GOING ON??? ... First of all, "laglobule," thank you for not posting this kind of hoax; there are other forums for that. It turns out that this problem is serious and should not be ignored!  After further information from our IT teams, it turns out that it cannot be removed, even by reinstalling...  We advise you not to launch MSN until the problem is found!  We have noticed that the bandwidth of our ADSL is constantly being used when MSN is open due to the transmission of information from your computer to an organization; we don't know more about it at the moment...  But we ask you to be careful, the virus spreads very quickly!   Solutions/tips:   - Do not launch MSN  - Update your antivirus (a new version of the virus database should normally be released if the problem has been identified)  - Perform a COMPLETE scan of your computer (Antivirus + AntiSpyware)  As some have noticed, shared folders are disappearing, so please be careful!

I wanted to ask some silly questions ^^: - Do all the infected use WLM? - Do you all use Messenger Plus? - Do you all use Messenger Discovery Live? - What antivirus do you use? - Which OS do you use (Vista or XP)? Thank you, so basically the problem comes from WLM  The square does not appear with some of my contacts when I open the conversation window, and it has disappeared with the first contact I saw with the little white square I have no issues with the sharing folder or data loss.. for now... I downloaded Clean virus msn to see if it detects the virus, nothing to report so far

Re again ^^  A friend told me that it's indeed a problem coming from WLM, apparently, it's a server issue with MSN, it doesn't recognize properly whether we have a WEBCAM or not, but I don't know if he's right, I'm just informing you ^^

Well, after some research... this white square is in the location of an icon present in the beta version of WLM 9 and which appears in versions 8.1.... 8.5..... It's the Office icon (the sort of red and yellow bow) If you want to check, do as I did, install WLM 9 ;-)  So no stressssssssssssssssss

WLM 9? I didn't even know that version existed, I have 8.5, but what I don't understand is why it only happens with certain contacts. For example, when a contact comes online and I try to talk to them, a box appears under their profile picture, but it doesn't do that for them. Grrrrrrrr, I hate it when things don't work properly!!!

Hi everyone, I think I know where it comes from. I've been on MSN for a while and I've been studying computers; I'm pretty experienced, but I have a little doubt because this white square was absent yesterday and something unusual happened. My XP system asked me 3 or 4 times in a row to perform updates (at 3 or 4 hours apart), and since then I've had this square. So I think it comes from the XP system because of the updates, and I don't believe this is a virus at all. I think it's more of a new MSN feature being implemented, and if it's empty for now, that's normal in my opinion. The sign to turn on the webcam should soon appear inside it. As for the lost shared folders, disable the shared folders and then reactivate them. Then the person who sent you the files you lost should open the shared folder and check the history; if those files are there, you should have them, and if they're not, ask them to resend them to you.

LOL.. hey guys, I have the best antivirus on the market, and it hasn't detected any viruses for me!!!! (eset nod 32 2008)  And as for this so-called problem, I think, like many, that it must be due to an upcoming update for Windows Live Messenger. Hello everyone.  So actually I have the same problem as you, I see a white square underneath my contact's personal image. And after reading your 5 pages, I left Msn for fear of contaminating my other contacts. I'm really not sure who to believe, those who say it's a virus, those who say otherwise, then the so-called information that says it's a new icon of WLM 9.  I really think it's because of Friday the 13th xD  (My PC is running Vista and I have version 8.5 of Msn.)

Thanks to Circus who found me the source of this square, which I thank very much in passing, I managed to remove the square. I'm going to explain to all those who find it annoying and also to those who, like me, having a skin for my MSN, that famous distorted square ruined the whole aesthetic. C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail remove all icons related to Microsoft Office, then repeat the action in C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\Stationery as well as in the underlying folders C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\Proof. As a precaution, I made a copy of the files in a separate folder on another local disk. Personally, the square has disappeared from all my windows after rebooting MSN and it hasn't affected its stability in any way. I promise nothing, I'm just trying...

I also had this problem, so I switched to WLM 9.0 and no more issues, it's a solution, but for those who don't want to use the BETA version (which I understand), I have a second homemade solution. You probably know the msgsres dll, I had tinkered with it before to get rid of all the ads and everything... I took my friend's DLL who is still on 8.5 and modified this DLL to remove that white icon that annoys some people (it's true, it's UGLY).... while looking closely, I noticed that Microsoft had already placed a piece of code for the location of the office icon... I just had to correctly remove that piece of code and that’s it. I’m going to let you benefit from this DLL: http://napster.fk.free.fr/msgsres.zip  Place this DLL here after making a backup copy of the old one (just in case): C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\  There you go, I’ll leave you with that @++
