How to connect a desktop unit to a laptop?

In my humble opinion, your problem is not with your laptop but with your CPU because that's what you want to manage.
If you have a monitor, you can manage your second computer (with the CPU) from your laptop using Windows Remote Desktop or VNC, which is a software for connecting to a remote computer. However, if you don't have a monitor and the graphics card on your CPU has a TV output, you can connect the CPU to your TV with some adjustments, certainly.
It all depends on what you want to do, but connecting the laptop to the CPU is impossible, sorry for the negative responses... Maybe there will be other positive answers.

I have a laptop and a desktop, and my goal is to be able to control my desktop just with my laptop, not just to exchange data between the two... What you want to do is definitely achievable... there are utilities like VNC for example (free) that allow you to take control of a remote machine...

The only thing to do is to connect your two machines (laptop and desktop) on a network... with fixed IP addresses and ideally a good router if you want both of your devices to have internet access... (simultaneously)...

In the same spirit, if you have Win XP Pro on your desktop and whatever version on your laptop, it is possible to use remote desktop... a utility standard in the XP versions...

You won't be able to do that because without a monitor your tower won't turn on and it will make a lot of "beep sounds" to clarify error codes. At least one monitor is needed and what you wanted to do can be done afterwards. Are you using Windows in French or English and how do you enter the BIOS (Boot Input Output System)??

Clearly my response is late compared to the date of the question; but maybe it could help others who have the same issue: there are now "KVM switches" available at an affordable price (20€) that allow you to manage 2 PCs with a single screen, a single mouse, and a single keyboard...
