Malheureusement sur LINUX c'est seulement sur les cartes ATI et NVIDEA qui bénéficient de pilotes propriétère quand peu activer l'accélération graphique pour les jeux; Les pilote libre ne le supporte pas pour l'instant sinon pour ceux qui ont des cartes graphique ATI et Nvidea et qui sont sur UBUNTU il faut aller dans system administration pilote de péripherique et espérer que votre carte sois supporté
J'ai exactement le même pb et je ne sais pas comment activer l'accélération graphique pour pouvoir utiliser Play on linux. Voici ce que la commande glxinfo | grep "direct rendering" me donne :
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)
J'ai suivi à la lettre la documentation Radeon http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/radeon mais j'ai toujours ce pb.
De plus je lance la commande LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo | less et voilà le résultat :

Apparement nous avons tous le meme probleme...
Pour ma part je suis sous Ubuntu 7.10 version PPC 64-bits (Playstation3),
bizarement j'ai reussi a activé les effets de bureau, tout marche a la perfection
par contre c'est mon processeur qui se charge de tout, donc sa rame un peu (beaucoup...).
Mon probleme (le notre) se situe au niveau du driver (generique). qui utilise mal (pas) la carte graphique, d'ou "direct rendering: no (if you want to...)".
Dans mon cas c'est la Firme nippone qui refuse l'acces au RSX (Nvidia) sous Linux (c'est chiant...).
Dans le votre, en installant tout un tas de lib et drivers, ca devrait fonctionner,
Ce sera plus compliqué pour les 64-bit (bienvenue au club).
Via Synaptic fait vos recherche pas mot clé (exemple: XGL).
Bon courage, Linux c'est l'avenir!

Chez moi (sidux), le pilote graphique libre d'intel fonctionne nickel, la 3D aussi. C'est d'ailleurs le driver le plus évolué. Il supporte déjà déjà des choses qui sortiront avec la prochaine version de linux et de xserver (kernel modesetting, dri2) ainsi que GEM qui vient de sortir avec linux 2.6.28.
D'ailleurs les pilotes graphiques propriétaires donnent parfois des soucis. Par exemple il y a des bugs graphiques avec kde 4 avec les drivers nvidia propriétaires qui sont dus à ces drivers. Depuis le temps que ça dure, les bugs n'ont tjrs pas été corrigés de la part de nvidia (en tout cas pas dans la version stable de leur driver). S'ils auraient été libres ces bugs aurait pu être corrigés par la communauté.
Pourriez-vous poster votre xorg.conf ?
Il semble que chez moi, je n'ai pas l'extension GL_EXT_framebuffer_object.
