There are quite a few small software programs that aren't very efficient. You can try Easy Recovery from V-Com (formerly Ontrack). It's pretty good, but the trial version is limited to a few files. You'll see it works well; I recovered some files from a floppy disk that my sister had chewed up before throwing it in the toilet. The software found part of my files. ;).

Hello,

As long as the file allocation table (the "summary" of the files, in fact) has not been erased, recovery remains possible. How do you think the police (and the Justice system), thieves, spies, and the like manage to find hidden information? Through this "basic" process. A file that has been sent to the trash remains readable as long as nothing has been written to its location. To make it definitively unrecoverable, you need to overwrite it with random series of 1s and 0s.

So, if there really was formatting, recovery is supposed to be impossible.

If there was an accident, we can always try; after all, nothing to lose! And there's no need to pay for the appropriate software; There is PC Inspector File Recovery, in French and free. This software can handle NTFS.

For your information,

I foolishly crashed (PC crash) an Iomega Peerless cartridge (a 20GB removable hard drive with FireWire). The system no longer recognizes this cartridge!

Drive Rescue was able to recover 95% of the data (that's quite good, the other 5% of files being permanently damaged [not too serious!]). As an anecdote, however, my cartridge seems to be ruined (no way to format it)!

Thank you Windows XP!!!! I have 2 hard drives: the first one serves as my system drive and the second one as a backup drive (which held all my very important documents!). When I tried to format my system drive, I wasn't paying attention, and Windows XP Pro formatted the backup drive.... A year and a half of work wiped out in a few minutes!!!! For your information regarding the corrupted allocation table:
Norton Utility 2001 (the CD that still boots at startup, not the new one) can restore a FAT partition whose allocation table has been destroyed: filled with zeros.

I just wanted to tell you something guys...

I've started to know a bit about this, and the thing is, in 72 hours, I've recovered codes that I had saved, formatted (completely, not quickly) and written over...

The principle is simple, the 0s and 1s are actually clusters charged with electricity... And the thing is, even after a state change, there is always a residue of the charge, positive (1) or negative (0), of the data that was previously stored on the disk...

I gently took out my disk and carefully analyzed it, and after passive reading of the disk, and complex calculations of the "remains" of charges, I was able to recover my disk to 85% of its original state...
But for that, you need another disk, a bit of gear, and above all, knowledge...

So scratch a little more, you'll find...
(P.S.: the programs I used were created by the German Police, and thus in German, but they are out there... look in some pirate corners... Then, understand and act! And don't clutter the forums with "it's not possible.... blah blah blah...")

- regarding magnetism, there are always residues, SO it is always possible to recover data. The rest is just a matter of sensitivity and means.
- which brings us to the second point:
since not everyone has the equipment/knowledge necessary to recover after messing up (like saying it's not my fault, it's Windows that's wrong), it's better to print the essential data, the vital ones even if they are just a few megabytes, as for the rest... astala vista...

Hello,

All these messages give me hope, but I haven't been able to sleep for 2 days because my data on the disk was so important.
I'm on XP and my files are in NTFS
I have a hard drive partitioned into 2 (operating system and data).
Like others, when reinstalling XP, it formatted both disks in quick NTFS.
I reinstalled XP on the partition where the OS was and didn't touch the partition where the data was.
I tried to recover using Easy Recovery Pro 6, but it found nothing, the same for File Recovery...
Which software is most likely to work given my situation?
If a software recovers something for me, can I save it on my data recovered from my XP partition, or do I need to have a physically different hard drive?

Hi floums, I don't know you, but I understand you, we're in the same boat... It's been three weeks since I've been struggling to recover files (jpeg). I've tried so many software programs without success that I can only wish you good luck. As for me, there's still a company in Germany that offers a search, but it's paid (90 Euros and then it depends on the number of photos recovered). I'm about to give in... it's the one that offers smart recovery (free but for flash-type cards and limited in size to a few hundred MB). And to think that some people know how to use the disk magnetization directly!!! Good luck

I managed to recover 70% of my drive using Get Data Back, which turned out to be more effective than all the others that found absolutely nothing.
PHEW! It found almost all of my photos but nothing in terms of music (.mp3).

You should not write anything more on the disk to be restored, so you need to start from another hard drive or place yours in another PC. The same goes for Restoration: it allows you to regenerate pieces of information, but you must write them on a different partition than the one you are working on... I downloaded DiscRescue and it found my files - I haven't checked but supposedly all of them! Thank you then.

One issue remains: I decided to only save what was essential - so not all the programs that I can reinstall.

However, when I try to access a Word file saved from RescueDisk, I'm unable to open it on the grounds that it doesn't have a .doc extension; the saved photos do not give any preview...

Does this mean I have to save EVERYTHING?

Sorry, I don't know that. But intuitively, if it couldn't regenerate an entire doc file for you, it won't be any better in "full" rather than "partial." Open the recovered file with Notepad to see if it resembles a DOC file in binary (binary mode shows cryptic symbols but it still contains constant elements specific to the internal structure of Microsoft Word files). If it's totally off compared to the gold watch, it means you've already lost the information you hoped to recover with that file. There are chances for others, I’m crossing my fingers for you...  :,§_ ç _ (@)=(@)

I didn't read the post carefully, so I hope I won't repeat what someone else has said, but the best way to avoid all these troubles is to do a quick format. It takes about 2 or 3 seconds, the disk is completely wiped, and everything is recoverable 100% with software like Easy Recovery. Of course, there is one drawback: the last cluster of the disk becomes unusable, so no Scandisk or partition creation.  So if you want to create several partitions on your disk, the best thing to do is a regular format, but the chances of recovering files are reduced...

Hello everyone,  I had partitioned my C drive and placed all my personal documents in the second partition. I had a major issue and now I have no choice but to format my drive and reinstall Windows XP. The partition has disappeared and my drive has returned to its original state. My documents have been deleted. I tried GetDataBack. It found all my files, but once I download them to another drive and try to read them, they are all corrupted. It's impossible to read Word documents, image files, sound files, videos, etc. Is there anything I can do, or something I haven't done while using GetDataBack? How can I read my files again, or repair them? Are there other more efficient software options (I have tried a few, and only GetDataBack was able to locate my files)? Thank you all for your help. To delete a partition use "delpart". ftp://ppdominique.no-ip.com/System/delpart.zip Copy the file to a floppy disk. It's a small program that works under DOS. Boot the PC with a Windows 98 startup disk. ftp://ppdominique.no-ip.com/Microsoft/Disquette_boot_win98/Disquette_boot_win98.zip Then insert the floppy disk with delpart.exe into the drive. Then: a:\delpart c: Be careful what you do.!!!!! Don't mess up the disks as the partition is entirely deleted. You should normally recover the full capacity of your disk.

Actually, I already have Windows XP (Pro) and I don't have a floppy disk drive. Even if I put this file on a CD, I'm not sure it will work. But the problem is that even if I manage to boot from this file, I only have one partition on my computer (C:/ where Windows is) and everything else seems to be corrupted or defective because when I try to format (when I boot with the XP CD) I only see C:/ and an "unknown disk, there are no disks in this drive" so for it, it's not a partition, so I won't be able to delete it. Hello. In my opinion, there shouldn't be any problems. It's important to know that delpart deletes 'EVERYTHING'. You end up with a disk that comes from the shop. Make a boot CD with the contents of the win98 disk and delpart.exe. Dominique

Hello everyone, back in the dinosaur days (MS-DOS), when we accidentally formatted, we could run the command (unformat) which allowed us to recover everything as long as it was done immediately after. I had the same problem mentioned above: XP Pro formatted both my system and main backup hard drives because the partitions were primary except for a third partition that was a logical drive. Good evening. There is something that is little known and extremely important when it comes to recovering deleted files. It’s the fact that the deleted file may be fragmented or not. Imagine a file fragmented into 3 parts, let’s say 3 KB, 5 KB, 2 KB, which makes a total file size of 10 KB. Fragmented means that the 3 parts of the file are not contiguous on the disk. In fact, you don’t even know that your file is fragmented. It’s Windows that "glues" the pieces together when you open it, which actually takes longer than if the file were in one single block. Let’s say you accidentally delete it. You immediately start one of the Undelete software and what happens is, the software detects the file but due to the fragmentation, it only retrieves the first block of 3 KB and not the others. This is not a bug or inconsistency but is due to the loss of information about the order of the sectors (clusters) of the file, also called cluster chaining. On my Windows 98 system, I was constantly rebooting in safe mode..., no access to CD ROMs, no network connection.... I had two hard drives, C: the Windows system (10GB) and D: data (40GB) Before formatting, I made sure to save C in a new directory on D:. It was impossible to complete a Windows 98 reinstallation for various reasons related to the inability to read CDs... When the confirmation of formatting was requested, I only validated the one concerning C:. I then attempted to install WP twice; the bootable CD-ROM was accepted twice, C: formatting occurred, but during the last operation, a blue screen appeared with error 0000..... Finally, I managed to install Windows 2000 after formatting C:.  But afterwards, I notice that my main disk C is now 40GB, with all data erased and no trace of my old system disk.  With recovery software like GetDataBack, there are no other files to recover other than Windows-related files...  Do you think I have lost everything?  During formatting, is it true that all disks are automatically formatted? How could there have been this confusion between C and D?  For the future, how can I make my 10GB C disk reappear under Windows 2000?  Thank you.

Hello everyone.  I just wanted to clarify this: A hard drive is always fatal without warning (from age or by accident). So always make another backup on a CD or rewritable DVD or magnetic tape for those who can afford it. This doesn’t take much time and it can prevent disasters (Losing all the photos from the last 5 years is a real disaster).  So 1- Back up your work  2- Back up your work  3- Back up your work.  I know I'm a bit late on this forum! but I hope you all manage to recover as much data as possible.

Hello. To my knowledge, there shouldn't be any software that is much faster. What does long mean? For your information, I once had to recover data from a formatted disk, it took 3 days. The larger the disk, the longer the scan will take. (We can count in hours) It's better to have a machine with a processor running at 2 GHz rather than 500 MHz. So, patience!

Hi, I had the opportunity to use several recovery software, and in my case, the fastest and most reliable is undoubtedly "getdataback." I am a security specialist and I can confirm that it is possible to recover data after a quick format, a full format, and even a true low-level format. It is possible to recover data even if the user has changed the partition type as well. The only way to be sure that the data no longer exists is to follow these three steps:   1) Low-level formatting (erase the MBR)  2) Use a bootable software that fills the hard drive with random data  3) Attach it to a nuclear bomb and wait for it to explode   A good program for data recovery is Stellar Phoenix.

As XGuarden says, it is almost impossible to lose any data on a hard drive... However, recoveries can be quite variable. For my part, I regularly crash my system due to various manipulations (every 6 months, it becomes completely unstable and requires formatting), and often I forget to recover the little file that I need again in the new installation. I've used: Get Data Back: excellent Easy Recovery as well.  I'm currently testing Stellar Phoenix Fat & NTFS, and apparently, it goes a bit further, as I recover data from a double formatting... Hi I had a 40GB hard drive partitioned into 2; one part for Windows and the other for my personal documents, and when I formatted it, I formatted both partitions. After reading this page, I installed Easy Recovery Pro and it found a lot of files, but it’s a trial version that doesn’t allow recovering files, and I don’t have €500 to spend, so if someone could tell me where to find a free version or a patch, that would be great. On the other hand, I tried GetDataBack but it found fewer files. In any case, a big thank you to everyone for your advice. Lo

Hi,  I have a big problem and I hope that a genius can help me... unless the situation is completely hopeless...  Here’s the problem:  I had a Windows XP version and I wanted to replace it with a new XP version that includes Service Pack 2.  I launched the CD of my new Windows while formatting. Unfortunately, I didn’t back up everything beforehand. I kept the fonts and bookmarks, but nothing else.  The issue is that I had all my emails in Outlook for over a year and I hadn’t created an archive file, except for one that I can’t even open anymore.  Would doing an "unformat" allow me to recover those lost emails?  PS; I called Skynet but they don’t keep emails on their hard drives.  Thanks in advance  Heliosphan

Having had an issue with my PC, after some checks, my brother explained to me that it would be better to format. I made sure to back up everything I had in (D:). However, one folder that I cared a lot about, which contained many photos, got caught up in it since it was saved in Windows (C:). Hello,  I had an external hard drive that had a problem with shifted writing, I changed the USB cable, and I wanted to transfer the content from disk A to another external disk B of the same capacity. I intended to format disk A and I messed up and obviously did a quick format in NTFS on disk B, which was filled with mp3s of bootlegs and other rarities...  I haven't written anything over it yet, I tried "PC Inspector Files Recovery" but after 7 hours of scanning, it doesn't show any .mp3 files but clusters that are Chinese to me  I will try the links located a bit higher, my question is the following: out of all the options, which one would be the most suitable for recovering .mp3 files on an external hard drive formatted in NTFS under Windows XP? After trying a dozen software programs, the only one that managed to show me all of my lost .mp3 files is Get Data Back for NTFS, BUT version 3.03 displays the list of files that can be recovered, and when you right-click to copy and paste to another hard drive, the message > option available only with the full version...   Damn, 8 hours of scanning for nothing!   I therefore recovered an older version but with the same principle,  I'm waiting to see if I'll be able to copy/paste my recovered files...
