Create a ZIP folder

-

Hello,

I need to send a file that is 11.5 MB, but I can't attach it in an email because my mailbox says it’s too large. I created a ZIP that reduces it to 10.5 MB, but that is still too big.

How can I reduce this folder and send it?

Thank you to the community for your help.

  1. Hello.

The idea from luckydu43 is relevant.

You also have the option to lighten your document:

    • Delete one or two videos, one or two music files.
    • Replace your high-definition photos with lower-definition photos.
    • If you use many different fonts, reduce their number.

You should go below 10 MB...

    1. Hello Raymond PENTIER,

This is a document received without photo, image, or sound, consisting only of written content on 10 pages.

  2. Hello,

Why not use an online service without registration like SwissTransfer or Smash?

If that does not bother your recipient, of course.

    1. Hello,

Yes, this is THE solution to prioritize: email wasn’t designed to carry a lot of data.

: Simply put the document’s sharing link in the email and your recipient will be able to download the document without any problem (and your inbox won’t get bloated by 11MB)

There are also free alternatives that store temporarily and encrypt the documents on their servers:

      you also have :

      wetransfer
      transfernow

but swisstransfer accepts the largest volume

  3. Hello

It's a folder. Separate the files into 2 sends, the recipient will understand

    1. Hello Luckydu 43,

In fact, it’s a document that has 10 pages.

We are talking about a computer file, not a folder, regardless of the functional role of the document.

If the page is larger than 1MB, I invite you to follow Raymond Pentier's advice further down.

You must remove and lighten the media within the document before reinserting them.

    Hello,

It might be complicated; I haven’t used it in years, but PAQ8PX is one of the most powerful algorithms in the world for data compression.

In the past you had to drag the pdf onto paq8px.exe to compress it, and the same for decompression, but I’m not sure if you now have to use the command line or not; instructions are normally included.

It depends on who you’re sending the pdf to; if the person is able to decompress it afterward with the same program, you’ll gain a smaller size.

      Hi again,

But actually, 7-Zip, which is more widespread than PAQ8PX, would probably already compress enough if the limit is 10MB, in 7z Ultra format

You need a third-party compression tool other than Windows to extract, again, but 7-Zip is free and useful.

      Hello,

To put things in context, I have a PDF manual file for my TV, over 300 pages with (small) images and it weighs only 5 MB.

If it is not a folder but a single file, it is completely impossible that without incorporating media (images, tables...) it weighs more than 10 MB unless it itself is in a specific format (for example this file would be a photo of the original document in JPG format, in which case, apart from the proposed file transfer solutions that will fail if for example the file in question is intended for a certain number of administrations that will only accept attachments internal to their site, one can try an online conversion site to PDF).

  5. Hello Brucine,

Sorry for not replying sooner. I had scanned the letter double-sided onto a USB drive as the 5 pages without photos, only writing, then before sending I zipped it with 7zip on my desktop. Even with the zip, I have 10.5 MB instead of 11.5 MB, and it won't pass. So I did 4 scans with double-sided pages and sent each scan in a separate email. It's a document intended for only 2 family members, so private individuals.

I had never had this problem before.

    1. Hello,

If there are 10 pages, does that mean 5 double-sided sheets?

If it’s scanned, the starting text is just an image; the result is a photo in JPG or PDF, depending on what was chosen in the scanning software, the two, especially JPG, are already compressed, which explains why further compression hardly saves anything.

The size of the corresponding scans depends in the scanning software on the chosen resolution, any compression option...

A scan of A4 in pdf at 200 ppi is more than enough, it weighs roughly
3-4 MB but that’s still too much if there are 10, since you can hardly go below 200 ppi (a screen resolution is 72).

So indeed, either split into several sends or, as mentioned, make it available on a file transfer site.

  6. it doesn’t take 10 MB, but 2x5, yes. you can when you zip say the size of the files (for example 5 MB), and more problems to send in the same email!

    Best regards
