Find out who is behind a website

Hello,

At the beginning of November, I somewhat (a lot) imprudently purchased a leather jacket on the site richecote.com. Upon receiving the jacket that I had chosen in size XL, I realized it was in fact size L (at best). I immediately decided to return it. The website based in the Netherlands informed me that I needed to return it to China and provided me with an address. A bit (a lot) surprised, I began the process and understood that I was not at the end of my troubles:

I had to fill out a customs form, which would cost at least €52 by post (and probably more, not having gone through it all), and I needed an invoice that I requested several times and never received (strange, right?).

In despair, I contacted the site again, which offered me to keep the jacket and refund me 20% of the purchase price (€34 as I bought it for €170). It is now January 9, 2026, and despite numerous reminders, I have never been refunded and never will be.

I finally decided to file a complaint with the public prosecutor, but in vain, since I was notified that since the site is overseas, nothing will be done :-(

So I searched for information on this site, and here’s what I found (see below).

This doesn't help me much, so I’m trying to find out who the individual behind this site is to be able to file a complaint against them.

Thank you for your help

Hello,

Somewhere, when you address a site built in a makeshift way on Shopify, you run the risk of bearing the consequences.

I don't see where there is any criminal matter since the site offered you to return the item at your own expense, which you did not accept, and it concerns a commercial dispute.

But even if there were, the responsible party would be the company as a legal entity, not the individual who runs it, and anyway, I don't see how the public prosecutor would have more grounds for a complaint against the latter than against the former.

It is also worth noting that a criminal procedure generates a procedural right and a certain number of costs, including or not lawyer's fees, and that the judge would only condemn the losing party to a partial compensation in the best-case scenario: a criminal action is therefore out of the question in any case for the amounts at stake, if they are even relevant, since it should be noted that the criminal law punishes an offense, such as fraud, which is not constituted here, and not a commercial dispute, which is the subject of a civil summons (which would also incur costs related to that summons).

I am certain that all potential consumers using the internet have known forever that websites made with Shopify are unreliable or not reliable at all!

Too bad for me that I didn't know that and your remark has really helped me ;-)

Regarding the return, it was not mentioned on the site that the product had to be returned to China, but everyone knows that, it's common knowledge, well except for me, I really am a big fool, right?

I also didn't know that when an alternative to a return is offered and the promise is not kept, that was considered a common practice and perfectly honest, I really have a lot to learn!

I didn't know that a merchant could get away with not providing a purchase invoice, another practice that's perfectly legal!

Thanks again for your advice, it's valuable and I will make good use of it in the future :-)

The average consumer is at least supposed to know, even if the presentation of legal data is dubious and they don't know that Shopify generally means someone doing Dropshipping in their laundry room, to check reviews on the desired site.

I know well that there is not a 100% reliability, but on 3 or 4 of these sites, you can't find one by typing "Riche Cote reviews" where the "merchant" in question is not torn apart.

The site says that returns are at the customer's expense and does not specify where, but the prior information would have been easy to find:

https://www.signal-arnaques.com/scam/view/895711

I do not claim to help you, no one can, but I have no reason to be the target of your anger because your carelessness led you to make a bad deal, also often raising the question of what source you heard about the famous site from and why, if that is the case, its prices are significantly lower than those of the competition.

I simply repeat to you, it was your "question," that there is no resolution through criminal proceedings (what is the punishable offense? even the absence of an invoice to a private individual is not unless it is shown to be systematic and in French law, I do not know about Dutch law) nor civil because the cost would be disproportionate and in any case the "merchant" has offered a return that is indeed at the customer's expense and cannot be prosecuted.

Regarding the form of this question, there is of course no way to know which individual is managing such a company if they do not publish it or if this information cannot be found in the companies register of the country concerned, assuming of course that such a company exists and that the name of its website allows for a link to be made.

Hello,

I just saw that you had replied to me. I am out of pocket (170€) and have spent a lot of time on this, it will serve as a lesson for me. I did leave a review on the site you mentioned, hoping it will help others who will be more cautious than I was.

I am trying to sell the jacket on Leboncoin, but with no success :-( even though if it weren't for its size it is of good quality, I showed it to someone who knows leather and he told me it was really leather and that the stitching was well done. I think it will just stay in my closet until I get rid of it ;-)

Best regards
