Xiaomi MI 11 Lite 5G locked by a password

Hello,

I'm facing a serious problem with my Xiaomi MI 11 Lite 5G phone, and I'm seeking your help.

Here's what happened:

  1. I wanted to access my Gmail account via Google Chrome on my computer.

  2. After several unsuccessful login attempts, I initiated a account recovery process.

  3. Google offered to send a verification code to an old phone number that I no longer have access to.

  4. I then chose another option, using an active phone number on my Xiaomi phone.

  5. I received a notification from Google on my phone asking me to confirm that I was indeed recovering the account.

  6. I clicked “Yes” in the notification to confirm.

  7. Immediately after that, my phone locked itself.

  8. The screen now displays “Enter password”, whereas I never set a password on this device.

  9. My phone was connected to Wi-Fi at the time of the incident.

  10. I am still logged into my Gmail account on the phone.

I want to clarify that I do not wish to reset the device, as I want to preserve my PhD thesis data.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could:

  • Explain to me why this locking occurred.

  • Help me regain access to my device without losing my data.

  • Or let me know the steps to prove that I am indeed the legitimate owner of the phone and the associated Google account.

    Hello,

    To support the assertions made by my two colleagues, whom I salute.

    - you cannot use a phone number for authentication that you have not previously entered on your account. This is a protective measure that prevents any third party from impersonating your identity.

    - resetting a smartphone (factory reset) necessarily involves deleting data.

    - email accounts (unlike the reset) can only be authorized by the provider, in this case, Google.

    We therefore cannot assist you in this matter, other than providing you with their support address, and it is up to you to obtain the restoration of your account through the means listed on their forms.

    I add, without judgment, that theses, typewritten documents and other important papers should not be left on devices that could be lost, stolen, or submerged in more or less identified liquids, but at a minimum stored on an SD card (in case of smartphone lock)

    They should preferably be copied onto at least two external drives (preferably a hard drive) stored in different locations (in case of fire, theft or otherwise).

    We have all experienced at least once these unfortunate episodes, through negligence or ignorance of the dangers, and it is only afterward that we adopt the essential practices listed above.

      It's a bit unclear, how can we know that we are connected to our Gmail account (or more precisely to our Google account) if the phone is locked and therefore we don't have access to it?

      What is an "active number" on the phone, how is it accessible under those same conditions? Except for dual SIM, the phone only has one number and two-factor authentication assumes that the backup method is different (email, SMS to another number...): the lock may result from the fact that we tried to do it on the same one and it has been analyzed as an attempt at illegitimate access.

      As for the rest, I don't know except that the operator generally has nothing to do with it; if we have blocked the PIN code, he can only provide the unlocking PUK code if he can demonstrate that he owns the SIM card, which we are supposed to have without him.

      There are definitely at least two "passwords": that of the Google account, and unless there is another means of identification (biometric...) the phone's PIN code.

        Although the phone is locked, the notification bar is visible. I can see the various messages in the notification box, but I cannot open them.
