Recover deleted files on Mac with Photorec

Hello everyone,

I recently encountered a problem with my external hard drive and I'm a bit lost as to how to resolve it. I used this external hard drive to create a bootable Windows USB drive, but prior to that, I had important files that were also on my desktop. Unfortunately, I made a mistake and deleted those files from the desktop, and they were also present on the external hard drive, but were deleted during the creation of the bootable drive.

To try to recover these files, I decided to install the Photorec software on my Mac. However, when I try to launch the .exe file, a DOS window opens and I don't know what to do next. Here’s what appears in the DOS window:

Last login: Thu Mar 21 19:51:18 on ttys000
/Applications/photorec ; exit;

The default interactive shell is now zsh.
To update your account to use zsh, please run `chsh -s /bin/zsh`.

and when I hit enter:

I tried pressing Enter after this message appeared, but nothing happens after that.

Could someone help me understand what’s going wrong and how to fix this problem? I would be really grateful for any help you could provide.

Thank you very much!

Hello @bazfile StatutModérateur, Contributeur sécurité and thank you!

Sorry, but I don't understand what's indicated...

  • On MacOSX, if you are not root, PhotoRec (for example, testdisk-6.13/photorec) will restart itself using sudo after your confirmation. sudo will ask you for your user password.
  • Os2.png Under OS/2, PhotoRec does not handle physical devices, only disk images, sorry.

The software does not ask me for my password, and I don’t know how to proceed from there.

Hello @bazfile StatutModérateur, Contributeur sécurité

Thank you, I’m sorry, I don't understand. When I launch photorec, it says "no hard disk found," so I can't follow the instructions from the other sites that were sent, and I can't write anything either.

I don't think the software is working properly; if anyone has other advice for recovering deleted files on Mac, please feel free to share.
